    PUNTOnet: Innovative Prototype of Urban Trash Containers Improving Waste Sorting and Widening the Services Offered to the City

    In order to meet European objectives in the field of urban waste collection, dustbins need to achieve a greater intelligence to recognize users and measure their garbage. The ongoing changes in waste collection are transforming ordinary garbage bins into innovative urban interface with huge potential, especially due to the capillary diffusion of waste disposal in the built environment. This paper presents a research, commissioned by one of the leading Italian multi-utility operating in environmental service, with the aim to improve municipal management of separate waste collection through the design and test of an innovative multifunctional station, in line with the principles of circular economy. The pilot project combines existing technologies regarding urban waste collection and new smart services for the city (environmental quality, ICT, electrical charging for bikes, video-monitoring and others); PUNTOnet, the innovative urban waste collection point, improves user experience, provides further services for the city and ensures, at the same time, a better management. Results obtained after a 12-month test in a real-world environment show that a more intuitive and user friendly design of waste disposal, associated to rewarding schemes positively affect household behaviour and may generate virtuous attitude for correct waste sorting

    Beyond Nagios - Design of a cloud monitoring system

    The paper describes a monitoring system specially designed for cloud infrastructures. The features that are relevant for such distributed application are -) scalability, that allows utilization in systems of thousands of nodes, -) flexibility, to be customized for a large number of applications, -) openness, to allow the coexistence of user and administration monitoring. We take as a starting point the Nagios monitoring system, that has been successfully used for Grid monitoring and is still used for clouds. We analyze its shortcomings when applied to cloud monitoring, and propose a new monitoring system, that we call Rocmon, that sums up Nagios experience with a cloud perspective. Like Nagios, Rocmon is plugin-oriented to be flexible. To be fully inter-operable and long-living, it uses standard tools: the OGF OCCI for the configuration interface, the REST paradigm to take advantage of Web tools, and HTML5 WebSockets for data transfers. The design is checked with an open source Ruby implementation featuring the most relevant aspects

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Design and evaluation of a process model for the early stages of product innovation

    Today’s business world is highly dynamic, competitive and hardly predictable. In the context of innovation management, this leads to shorter product lifecycles, higher degrees of uncertainty and ultimately to high failure rates in New Product Development (NPD) processes. Most often, this is due to deficiencies in effectively and efficiently managing the early stages of the innovation process, which are referred to as the (Fuzzy) Front End of Innovation (FEI). As substantial work has been done in relation to the later stages of the FEI (idea generation, selection and concept development), the preceding stages of opportunity identification and analysis have been neglected. Especially in terms of identifying and depicting process-related factors and activities in practitioner relevant, formal process models, little to no research has been done so far. This research identifies and analyses FEI principles, differentiates between process and non-process principles and combines process-related ones in a comprehensive, theoretically grounded and practically applicable process model. Employing a design science research approach, the artefact – the FEI process model – is designed and built together with industry partners of a current research project. Following the research methodology, principles at the FEI are step-by-step identified, process model design requirements are derived based on these and the formal process model specifically supporting process key activities at the strategic FEI is developed. Evaluation of process model is done design inherent (ex-ante, focus group study) and final outcome related (ex-post, web-based survey). The pivotal contribution of the research is identification and structuring of processrelated strategic FEI key activities. Ex-post evaluation results confirm the practical relevance of the developed process model and its syntactic, semantic and pragmatic quality. In addition, the thesis provides contributions to knowledge base by identifying general FEI principles, process and non-process design requirements and by indicating future research needs
