At limits of life: multidisciplinary insights reveal environmental constraints on biotic diversity in continental Antarctica
Get PDFData source: Supporting information, http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0044578#s5Multitrophic communities that maintain the functionality of the extreme Antarctic terrestrial ecosystems, while the simplest of any natural community, are still challenging our knowledge about the limits to life on earth. In this study, we describe and interpret the linkage between the diversity of different trophic level communities to the geological morphology and soil geochemistry in the remote Transantarctic Mountains (Darwin Mountains, 80uS). We examined the distribution and diversity of biota (bacteria, cyanobacteria, lichens, algae, invertebrates) with respect to elevation, age of glacial drift sheets, and soil physicochemistry. Results showed an abiotic spatial gradient with respect to the diversity of the organisms across different trophic levels. More complex communities, in terms of trophic level diversity, were related to the weakly developed younger drifts (Hatherton and Britannia) with higher soil C/N ratio and lower total soluble salts content (thus lower conductivity). Our results indicate that an increase of ion concentration from younger to older drift regions drives a succession of complex to more simple communities, in terms of number of trophic levels and diversity within each group of organisms analysed. This study revealed that integrating diversity across multi-trophic levels of biotic communities with abiotic spatial heterogeneity and geological history is fundamental to understand environmental constraints influencing biological distribution in Antarctic soil ecosystems.Catarina Magalhães, Mark I. Grammaticalization of the arabic demonstrative iyyā-as a pronominal object marker in ditransitive verbs: An answer to Bravmann
No full textAmong its many functions, the synsemantic Arabic word iyyā-usually marks one of two pronominal objects of a ditransitive verb. Although its salience as such may give the impression that object marking has always been its primary function, it is likely that its origins lie elsewhere, specifically in its demonstrative function, which, while it occurs less often in that capacity, it nevertheless appears quite frequently as such in writing and in some speech. Indeed, all of its functions, including object marking, possess a demonstrative quality. Its earliest documented use outside of the Qur'an, wherein it always marks a pronominal object, comes in Sibawayhi's al-Kitāb, where, in addition to marking an object, it appears as a 'presentative' (Arabic arf al-tanbī), used in focusing joint attention. Palliative Care Consults Effect on Patients' Quality of Life and Rehospitalization Rates
No full textAn estimated 117 million U.S. citizens have chronic illnesses, yet only 14% of individuals receive palliative cares services (Phongtankuel et al., 2018). An 81-bed, Midwestern U.S. hospital's palliative care team, comprised of certified nurse practitioners (CNP) and medical doctors (MD), identified the underutilization of palliative care services within the organization's inpatient population. The palliative care team relies on palliative care consults from the attending physician. Within a 3-year period, only 13.8% of patients admitted to the facility received palliative care consults (S. Thompson, personal communication, October 12, 2020). Consequently, the palliative care team identified the need for a standardized screening process to identify inpatients appropriate for palliative care services. Two Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) students sought to implement a standardized screening process using the Palliative Performance Scale (PPS; DeWitt et al., 2019). The purpose of the study was to explore the relationship between palliative care services and patients' perceived quality of life (QOL) and 30-day readmissions. The convenience sample included patients admitted to a 23-bed medical floor between June 2021 and September 2021. Overall, 80 patients were identified via the standardized screening process. Post-identification follow-up data was collected from September 2021 to December 2021. Study results demonstrated insufficient data was collected to fully analyze the impact of palliative care on patients' perceived QOL. There was no significant reduction in 30-day readmissions with palliative care involvement (χ² = 0.482; df 1; p = .488). Secondary outcomes, such as death within 90 days of discharge and hospice enrollment, were also analyzed
