An Introduction to the DA-T Gibbs Sampler for the Two-Parameter Logistic (2PL) Model and Beyond

    No full text
The DA-T Gibbs sampler is proposed by Maris and Maris (2002) as a
Bayesian estimation method for a wide variety of Item Response Theory
(IRT) models. The present paper provides an expository account of the DAT
Gibbs sampler for the 2PL model. However, the scope is not limited to
the 2PL model. It is demonstrated how the DA-T Gibbs sampler for the 2PL
may be used to build, quite easily, Gibbs samplers for other IRT models.
Furthermore, the paper contains a novel, intuitive derivation of the Gibbs
sampler and could be read for a graduate course on sampling

James R. Maris- A turbo-shaft helicopter engine has been given to Purdue's School of Technology by Detroit Diesel Allison, Indianapolis, a division of General Motors. Presenting the engine to Prof. James R. Maris, right, head of the Department of Aviation Technology, was H.J. Coe, (CHE40), left. manager of sales engineering for the division. The engine, of modular construction, will be used in familiarization courses, said Eino T. Aaltonen, center, instructor in aviation maintenance technology

Analysis of Yield Spreads on Commercial Mortgage-Backed Securities

    No full text
Yield spreads on commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS) are defined as the difference between the yield on CMBS and the yield on comparable-maturity Treasuries. CMBS yield spreads declined dramatically from 1992 until 1997, then increased in 1998 and 1999. The relationship between CMBS yield spreads and other variables is estimated in an effort to explain recent trends. Results identify several variables that are related to yield spreads on both fixed-rate and variable-rate CMBS. However, even after controlling for other observable factors, the yield spread on CMBS still declined from 1992 until 1997, then increased each of the next two years. Possible explanations for this phenomenon are explored.

Kata kunci : pendidikan anggota, minat menabung, CU Stella Maris Siantan Abstract: This study aims to determine the effect of education of the members of the interest of saving the Credit Union Stella Maris Siantan Pontianak. The method used is descriptive research form used Correlation Studies (study of correlation). The sample was 217 members. The results of the data analysis shows that there are significant between the independent variable (X) on the dependent variable (Y), calculations using simple linear regression equation Y = a + bX then addressed in the equation Y = 5.014 + 1.128 X and test hypothesis test t> t table or 77.635> 1.9711. As for the influence of the coefficient of determination test results with SPSS 16 with the percentage of education members to save the credit union interest stella maris Pontianak Siantan very high at 96.6%, while the rest is affected by other factors that are not addressed in this study. Keywords: education members, interest savings, CU Stella Maris Sianta

Bayesian inference for multistage and other incomplete designs

Following Maris, Bechger and San-Martin (2015), we develop a Markov chain - Monte Carlo method for Bayesian inference tailored to handle data collected in multistage and other incomplete designs. We illustrate its operating characteristics with simulated data, and provide a real application. To appear as: Koops, J. and Bechger, T. and Maris, G. Heterogeneous and tissue-specific regulation of effector T cell responses by IFN-gamma during Plasmodium berghei ANKA infection.

IFN-γ and T cells are both required for the development of experimental cerebral malaria during Plasmodium berghei ANKA infection. Surprisingly, however, the role of IFN-γ in shaping the effector CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cell response during this infection has not been examined in detail. To address this, we have compared the effector T cell responses in wild-type and IFN-γ(-/-) mice during P. berghei ANKA infection. The expansion of splenic CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells during P. berghei ANKA infection was unaffected by the absence of IFN-γ, but the contraction phase of the T cell response was significantly attenuated. Splenic T cell activation and effector function were essentially normal in IFN-γ(-/-) mice; however, the migration to, and accumulation of, effector CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells in the lung, liver, and brain was altered in IFN-γ(-/-) mice. Interestingly, activation and accumulation of T cells in various nonlymphoid organs was differently affected by lack of IFN-γ, suggesting that IFN-γ influences T cell effector function to varying levels in different anatomical locations. Importantly, control of splenic T cell numbers during P. berghei ANKA infection depended on active IFN-γ-dependent environmental signals--leading to T cell apoptosis--rather than upon intrinsic alterations in T cell programming. To our knowledge, this is the first study to fully investigate the role of IFN-γ in modulating T cell function during P. berghei ANKA infection and reveals that IFN-γ is required for efficient contraction of the pool of activated T cells

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
