El estatuto ontológico de la materia en Manuel Gois. A propósito del escotismo de los Conimbricenses

In the context of the late medieval diffusion of Scotism and nominalism, the Jesuit Manuel Gois, author of commentaries to some Aristotelian works on the philosophy of nature, receives some ideas of Henry of Ghent and Scotus (such as the actuality of prime matter and the immediate inhesion of quantity in the matter), although moderating them within a substantially Aristotelian position. After an initial presentation of John of saint Thomas’ critique to the Cursus conimbricensis physical treatises and a succinct consideration of the notion of matter according to the Augustinian-Scotist tradition and to Manuel Gois himself, the article analyses three typical questions of Gois’ natural philosophy that are logically connected to each other: the doctrine of the entitative act of matter, the possibility of a matter lacking all form, supposito interventu divino, and the matter as the quantity immediate inhesion subject.169 K

The Effect of Graphic Organizers and Instructional Scaffolding on Argumentative Writing Performance Among TESL Undergraduates

The present study investigated the effect of graphic organizers and instructional scaffolding on argumentative writing performance among TESL undergraduates. The study employed a quasi-experimental research using the pre-test and post-test design involving 90 TESL undergraduates being placed equally in three different groups underwent lessons on argumentative essay writing using different delivery modes, modes comprising of four stages of learning for a duration of four weeks. During the intervention period, three small groups of TESL undergraduates from the GOIS and GONI delivery modes were video-recorded to investigate on how they communicate in their groups. After the intervention, a semi-structured interview was carried out. A total of 9 students (GOIS, n=3; GONI, n=3; NGNI, n=3) were interviewed and the interviews were audio-recorded. The one-way ANCOVA was used to analyse the argumentative writing performance among the TESL undergraduates. The percentages were used to compare the overall percentages of Comm between the GOIS and GONI delivery modes while the qualitative data from the semi-structured interview of the three delivery modes were analysed using the constant comparative approach. Results showed that the group which underwent the GOIS delivery mode performed significantly better in the overall argumentative essay writing performance (p<.05) compared to their counterparts in the GONI and NGNI delivery modes. Additionally, in terms of the overall frequency of conjunctions and overall frequency of argumentative elements, the results indicated that both the GOIS and GONI groups performed significantly better (p<.05) than the NGNI group. In terms of overall percentages of , the GONI group outperformed the GOIS group. The findings from the semi-structured interview revealed that the GOIS group experienced learning better compared to the GONI and NGNI groups. The research confirmed that the GOIS and GONI delivery modes are effective in enhancing argumentative writing performance among TESL undergraduates. In line with this, the research ends with a recommendation for educators to adopt these delivery modes in t argumentative writing skills are enhanced. (Abstract by Author

A Fast Method for High-Resolution Voiced/Unvoiced Detection and Glottal Closure/Opening Instant Estimation of Speech

    No full text
We propose a fast speech analysis method which simultaneously performs high-resolution voiced/unvoiced detection (VUD) and accurate estimation of glottal closure and glottal opening instants (GCIs and GOIs, respectively). The proposed algorithm exploits the structure of the glottal flow derivative in order to estimate GCIs and GOIs only in voiced speech using simple time-domain criteria. We compare our method with well-known GCI/GOI methods, namely, the dynamic programming projected phase-slope algorithm (DYPSA), the yet another GCI/GOI algorithm (YAGA) and the speech event detection using the residual excitation and a mean-based signal (SEDREAMS). Furthermore, we examine the performance of the aforementioned methods when combined with state-of-the-art VUD algorithms, namely, the robust algorithm for pitch tracking (RAPT) and the summation of residual harmonics (SRH). Experiments conducted on the APLAWD and SAM databases show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art combinations of VUD and GCI/GOI algorithms with respect to almost all evaluation criteria for clean speech. Experiments on speech contaminated with several noise types (white Gaussian, babble, and car-interior) are also presented and discussed. The proposed algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art combinations in most evaluation criteria for signal-to-noise ratio greater than 10 dB.CASElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

Brazil in the first half of the twentieth century, sought a national rise in line with expectations and international standards and, to this end, forms a group of intellectuals who abandons the deterministic - racial explanations of our country. For these thinkers, the Brazilian problems resided in the absence of the state intervention in solving social issues. Therefore, connections between Education and Health are designed in the intellectual debate, reflecting on particular propositions in the area of Physical Education. The objective of this study was to describe and analyse the intellectual production that involved teaching children in general and the presence of School Physical Education as an alternative to the development of the nation with regard to its hygienists assumptions. In terms of methodology, this study was based in a historical survey that was characterized by empirical survey in the collections of the Mario Covas Center for Excellence in Education and Mario de Andrade Library. The documents were analysed with o cultural historic perspective with an interest in hygienism and within its context with its setbacks, specificities, such as heterogeneous social movement that influenced the school. It was concluded that the hygienist mentality is inserted in the curriculum from corporeal practices that are claimed to propagate good habits so that, in this context, gains legitimacy in the Physical Education School

Ensinar Filosofia na Coimbra do Século XVI: o caso dos ‘Commentarii Collegii Conimbricensis S.I.’ (1592-1606)

The first case of comprehensive Jesuit philosophical textbook, the Cursus Conimbricensis stands as a hallmark of the Jesuit way of teaching philosophy during the second half of the Sixteenth century. After having placed the Cursus conimbricensis in the European philosophical scenario, this paper aims to show how Manuel de Gois, as well as the other contributors, felt to be bound to Aristotle, the major authority according to the Ratio studiorum, in dealing with questions and (sometimes totally “new”) issues
