    Marimekko (Tasaraita) triibusärgi fenomen

The article discusses the history of Marimekko, which has become a classic clothes company in Finland, and the phenomenon of the striped T-shirt marketed under the Tasaraita brand. Initially Marimekko stood for elitist designer clothes, later youth apparel and, with the Tasaraita, eventually became the people's fashion. The principles of Marimekko design are representative of their period, i.e. the timeless and simple product design philosophy of the 1950s' multifunctionalism. Festive and casual clothes were no longer designed as separate products as the same items could fulfil different functions. The aim was to provide clothing for the entire nation, though Marimekko's products did not become people's clothing at the time, as the customers of the company were mainly educated and wealthy townspeople. Annika Rimala became the head designer of Marimekko in the period between the 1950s and 1960s, and developed the brand of Tasaraita in 1968. Tasaraita was a completely unique product, since the company had not produced jersey clothes before. Rimala's aim was to design a multifunctional jersey shirt that could be worn by anyone - from babies to old people, by men or women - the design concept clearly entailed the Maoist ideology of equality. Former consumers did not associate Tasaraita with Marimekko, since its sales remained rather modest. A year later Tasaraita was relaunched, but the ideological emphasis was dropped, and the sales of the product proved more successful. From the aspect of the clothing concept, this too was representative of the shaping of Marimekko's wholesome environment. The apex of the idea of equality was the unisex clothing adopted at the beginning of the 1970s. The typical example of unisex fashion was an outfit of jeans and a T-shirt. For people, the changes in the standard of living and lifestyle meant transforming from a maker of clothes to a consumer. For Marimekko the changes stood for people's growing opportunities and willingness to choose Marimekko's clothes, and on the other hand, Tasaraita was in accordance with the renewed clothing practices and ideals. While before new items were designed for each season, the basic products, such as those of the Tasaraita brand, came to be on sale all the time, with only the colour scheme altering from one season to another. This popularisation of the basic products enabled the emergence of a line of classical clothing. The success of the company in the 1970s, brought about by the success of Tasaraita product line, may be explained by Marimekko's clothing ideology being in accord with the general clothing ideology at the time. The responses of interviewed informants clearly reveal that Tasaraita was by no means a "clothing item for the entire nation" as it has been advertised. Tasaraita's position as a political statement is also controversial. While the general opinion of older informants was that left radicalism and Marimekko were totally incompatible, the younger informants associated Tasaraita with the spirit of the 1960s and 1970s, and only one respondent clearly linked Marimekko and especially Tasaraita with political ideology. Like jeans, Tasaraita has changed from the modern and even rebellious item of clothing to a widely worn item of casual clothing. Its increasing popularity, which started in the late 1960s, also attests to the topicality of the style associated with Tasaraita. The article Marimekon Tasaraita pukeutumisilmiöna by Arja Turunen, written originally in Finnish, was published in 2004 in the e-journal of the Department of History and Ethnology of the Jyväskylä University, J@rgonia, no. 3 (available online at http://virtuaaliyliopisto.jyu.fi/jargon/jargonia/marimekko)

Mika Ihamuotila, the chief executive officer at Marimekko, has indicated in a few articles that Marimekko wishes to start searching out to a younger target group. Currently Marimekko's main target group is middle-aged women. In my bachelor's thesis, I am designing a small, fictitious Marimekko collection of raincoats for 20 - 30 years old women. I use three different methods. I have a test group, which consists of eleven women in the age of 20 – 30 years. In a survey, they tell me their opinion about Marimekko and their attitude towards trends and style. They also comment on moodboards, fashion drawings and suggestions of pattern. According to my test group, it is important that a raincoat is practical, comfortable and classic rather than trendy but yet different. The economical aspect is also significant. I analyze the existing supply of raincoats at a few chain stores as well as at a couple of established online shops. On the market, there are mostly raincoats for recreational purposes, more casual than sophisticated. Finally, I also analyze the cornerstones in the concept of Marimekko. Marimekko stands for simplicity, functionality and clean-cut garments with dominating patterns. Based on my three starting points I design three raincoats for Marimekko, of which I make two prototypes. The result of my bachelor's thesis is three raincoats that attract a younger target group, raincoats with a design that you cannot find anywhere on the market at the same time as they fit in to the concept of Marimekko

Tämä Pro Gradu -tutkielma on tehty tunnetun suomalaisen design-yrityksen, Marimekon, innoittamana mutta taloudellisesti riippumattomasti. Tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää, millaisissa yhteyksissä Marimekko esiintyy globaalisti sosiaalisen median käyttäjien päivityksissä. Tarkasteltava sosiaalisen median kanava on visuaalista sisältöä painottava Instagram. Tutkimus pyrkii selvittämään, kuinka Instagram- käyttäjät tuovat Marimekkoa esiin osana identiteettiään ja minkä teemojen, mielipiteiden ja asenteiden yhteydessä Marimekko esiintyy Instagram-käyttäjien päivityksissä. Kvalitatiivinen ja multimodaalinen diskurssianalyysi selvittää, millaisia tunteita ja mielikuvia Marimekko-päivityksissä esiintyy, miten omaa persoonaa tuodaan esiin Marimekon avulla, millä kielellisillä keinoilla kannanottoja tehdään ja millaiseen elämänpiiriin tai ilmiöiden joukkoon Marimekko liitetään. Tutkimus pyrkii myös selvittämään, mikä puoli kansainvälisen suuryrityksen liiketoiminnoista painottuu kuluttajien viesteissä vahvimmin ja vastaako kuluttajien keskinäinen viestintä sosiaalisessa mediassa niitä pääviestejä, joita Marimekko lähettää yrityksenä omasta visiostaan, brändistään ja tuotteistaan. Tutkielman alkupuolella esitetään lyhyt taustakatsaus Marimekon globaaleihin viesteihin ja Instagramiin sosiaalisen median välineenä sekä somepalvelun tyypillisiin sisältöihin. Teoriaosassa määritellään tutkimuksen keskeiset käsitteet ja tehdään katsaus aiempaan tutkimuskirjallisuuteen. Teoriaosuus keskittyy identiteettiin, hashtagien käyttöön ja kannanottoon liittyvään lingvistiseen tutkimukseen. Metodologian taustana käytetään Bucholtz & Hallin (2005) teoreettista kehystä kielestä sekä identiteetistä. Georgaloun (2017) tutkimusta identiteetin rakentamisesta Facebookissa sovelletaan Instagramiin, ja tutkielma hyödyntää Zappavignan (2015) hashtag-tutkimuksen jaottelua. Suuren hakutulosmäärän vuoksi tutkielman aineisto on kerätty Instagramista satunnaisotannalla #marimekko-hashtagia käyttäen vuosilta 2016–2018. Koska Instagram-päivitysten merkitykset muodostuvat tekstin, kuvan ja symbolisten emoji-elementtien yhteisvaikutuksesta, tutkimus käsittelee viestejä multimodaalisina kokonaisuuksina. Tutkielman tulokset osoittavat, että Marimekko toimii osana Instagram- käyttäjien identiteetin rakentamista. Instagram-käyttäjät julkaisivat lähes pelkästään positiivista sisältöä, jossa he käsittelivät Marimekkoon liittyviä aiheita ja elämäntyylejä.

    Get PDF
Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää Marimekon muovin käyttöä pakkauksissa. Toimeksianto tuli Marimekolta, sillä yhtiön vastuullisuusstrategian yhtenä tavoitteena on vastuullisempien materiaalien lisääminen pakkauksiin. The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of plastic in packaging in Marimekko. The assignment came from Marimekko, as one of the goals of the company's corporate responsibility strategy is to add more responsible materials to the packaging. Responsibility for Marimekko includes, among other things, respect for the environment and reduction of environmental impact in all its activities. Other objectives of the strategy, namely reducing the carbon footprint, improving the material efficiency and preventing landfill waste formed the basis for the research. The objective of the study was to find out where and to what extent plastic is used in deliveries to and from warehouse, in stores and in e-commerce deliveries. In addition, the aim was to make proposals on how to reduce the use of plastic, how to replace it with more responsible alternatives, and how plastic recycling could possibly be improved. To address the above issues, the theory section consisted of defining the pros and cons of plastic and alternative materials, the relevance and requirements of packaging, and defining sustainable operations, i.e. the circular economy and recycling. Based on this knowledge, it was possible to start gathering data on Marimekko's operations through observation and interviews. Before the development proposals were reached, opportunities and alternatives for packaging materials were also explored through benchmarking and expert inquiries. Interviews with Marimekko's units in Finland and abroad revealed that plastics are used extensively, as all products are packed in plastics at the factory, warehouse and dispatch center, for example to provide good protection. Products may contain many plastics, and in addition, boxes or rollers will be wrapped around with plastic wraps, depending on the length and stress caused by the transport chain. Plastic hangers were considered challenging due to their high volume and problematic recyclability. The interviews also revealed that there are aspects to improve in plastic collection. Based on the material, the plastic should not be replaced with another disposable material or material difficult to recycle material. Also, since plastic is in many ways a good and even environmentally friendly material, it is not wise to replace it with a biodegradable alternative, for example. The development proposals submitted to Marimekko are thus based on the circular economy and the importance of recycling, also based on the EU objectives

The topic of this study was the career and the production of Kaarina Kellomäki as a fabric designer of Marimekko. The purpose of this study was to create a picture of Kaarina Kellomäki as a person and a fabric designer and to describe the work of the designer both on a general level and from the viewpoint of Marimekko, too. The study created a picture of the history of Marimekko, especially of its phases in the 1960s, when Kellomäki worked in the company. Reproduction of Kellomäki's prints, rich in the 2000s, was a significant part of this study. The 1960s and its most important phenomena functioned as the background information of this study. The data of this study primarily consisted of the information that was gathered by interviewing Kaarina Kellomäki in the springs 2012 and 2015. To complement these interviews, a theme interview was carried out with Mika Piirainen. His work and ideas as a fashion designer of Marimekko caused the reproduction of Kaarina Kellomäki's prints at the beginning of the 2000s. Minna Kemell-Kutvonen, Marimekko's Design Director, was involved in the interview. The archive data that I received from Designmuseum and Marimekko's archives in Herttoniemi supported the information of the interviews. There is no prior research on Kellomäki's career. This one was a case study, and for analyzing the data, the methods of the visual analysis and contextualizing were used. The career of Kaarina Kellomäki as a fashion designer of Marimekko continued less than a year, from the autumn 1965 to the spring 1966. In its shortness, it was in many ways a very significant time. The production of Kaarina Kellomäki in Marimekko consists of nine print patterns. In addition, she designed two patterns that were not produced. All the eleven patterns were designed in 1965-1966. Reproduction is a significant part of the career of Kaarina Kellomäki in Marimekko. It began in 2003, when Mika Piirainen chose Linssi-pattern to become reproduced in fashion designing. Since then, the reproduction has been rich and it has been important for the designer herself. During her career, Kellomäki become well known both as a fabric designer, a teacher of the University of Arts, Design and as a textile artist. The work period of Kaarina Kellomäki in Marimekko ended because of the designer's desire to get more freedom on the one hand and more limits on the other hand. The young designer wished to have more systematic guidance in her own job. The job of the designer in Marimekko was independent but only a small amount of patterns was yearly produced. The job as a freelancer that Kaarina Kellomäki adopted for several decades after her year in Marimekko, was more appropriate for the designer. The desire to remain as an independent artist and not to work in the midst of strong artist personalities was part of her longing for freedom.Tämän tutkimuksen aiheena oli tekstiilitaiteilija Kaarina Kellomäen työ ja tuotanto Marimekon painokangassuunnittelijana. Kaikki yksitoista kuosia on suunniteltu vuosina 1965–1966. Uudistuotanto on merkittävä osa Kaarina Kellomäen painokangassuunnittelijan uraa Marimekolla.
