Some reflections on the orientations and volume of accounting history research in the 21st century.
No full textEste artículo toma como punto de partida el 8th World Congress of Accounting Historians e intenta identificar las orientaciones que la investigación en historia de la contabilidad ha seguido desde entonces, es decir, desde el año 2000 hasta el 2007, los primeros años del siglo XX. El principal propósito de este ensayo es averiguar si ha habido novedades significativas en las direcciones de la investigación o, si por el contrario, su desarrollo ha seguido el curso previsible. Trataremos de asociar este propósito al estudio del volumen de la investigación publicada a este respecto en las principales revistas de contabilidad. Después de haber examinado y descrito la evolución de la historia de la contabilidad en estos primeros años del presente siglo, presentaremos algunas consideraciones personales acerca de los derroteros en que la investigación podría moverse en el próximo futuro. Taking as starting point the 8th World Congress of Accounting Historians this paper attempts to identify the orientations followed by accounting history research in the first years of the 21st century, that is, from 2000 up to 2007. The main purpose of the attempt is to find out whether there have been significant novelties in the directions of research or, on the contrary, its development has run in the foreseeable course. We shall try to associate this purpose to the study of the amount of related research published in the main accounting journals. After having examined and described the developments of accounting history research in the first years of present century, the paper presents some considerations on the directions in which research should move in the next future.Historia de la contabilidad, investigación, tendencias, siglo XXI. Health impact assessment of benzene levels emitted by gas stations in the city of La Plata, Argentina
No full textActivities carried out in gas stations mainly filling processes expose the surrounding population to high levels of contamination due to the emissions originated in their normal operations. This work analyzes the impact of these emissions as diffused sources in the city of La Plata (Argentina) and assesses the risk of contracting cancer (LCR) from exposure to the benzene estimated concentrations. To achieve this goal, the AERMOD modeling system was used as a dispersion assessment tool. The results show that, although the estimated concentrations do not represent a risk for the surrounding population, they reach 7.2-8.5 % of the limit concentration recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (corresponding to a LCR of 1 x10-6), regarding chronic exposure to benzene in the adult population. However, the levels may be alarming when considering other significant sources in the region that have not been included in the modeling, such as the petrochemical industrial area and the emission of gases coming from motor vehicles.Fil: Lefevre, Maria L.. Reversible mitochondrial respiratory chain impairment during symptomatic hyperlactatemia associated with antiretroviral therapy
No full textDirect evidence confirming the hypothesis that a dysfunction of the mitochondrial respiratory chain (MRC) underlies the pathogenesis of hyperlactatemia associated with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) is scarce. We studied mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) content and MRC function in the skeletal muscle of an HIV-infected patient during an episode of symptomatic hyperlactatemia. Skeletal muscle biopsy was performed during the episode when the patient was symptomatic and 3 months later when the patient was clinically recovered. Assessment of mitochondria was performed using histological, polarographic, spectrophotometrical, and Southern blot and real time PCR DNA quantification methods. The histological study disclosed extensive mitochondrial impairment in the form of ragged-red fibers or equivalents on oxidative reactions. These findings were associated with an increase in mitochondrial content and a decrease in both mitochondrial respiratory capacity and MRC enzyme activities. Mitochondrial DNA content declined to 53% of control values. Mitochondrial abnormalities had almost disappeared later when the patient became asymptomatic. Our findings support the hypothesis that MRC dysfunction stands at the basis of HAART-related hyperlactatemia
Symmetry for extremal functions in subcritical Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities
No full textWe use the formalism of the Rényi entropies to establish the symmetry range of extremal functions in a family of subcritical Caffarelli–Kohn–Nirenberg inequalities. By extremal functions we mean functions that realize the equality case in the inequalities, written with optimal constants. The method extends recent results on critical Caffarelli–Kohn–Nirenberg inequalities. Using heuristics given by a nonlinear diffusion equation, we give a variational proof of a symmetry result, by establishing a rigidity theorem: in the symmetry region, all positive critical points have radial symmetry and are therefore equal to the unique positive, radial critical point, up to scalings and multiplications. This result is sharp. The condition on the parameters is indeed complementary of the condition that determines the region in which symmetry breaking holds as a consequence of the linear instability of radial optimal functions. Compared to the critical case, the subcritical range requires new tools. The Fisher information has to be replaced by Rényi entropy powers, and since some invariances are lost, the estimates based on the Emden–Fowler transformation have to be modified

Por essa razão, serão abordados alguns aspectos com relação ao gênero textual analisado, o livro didático. No embasamento teórico será apresentada a teoria funcionalista de Christiane Nord (1991;1997) e alguns aspectos dos estudos de Hans J. Vermeer (1986). É princípio da teoria funcionalista que tradução é comunicação e aqui, neste trabalho também é construída esta ponte, pois os textos apresentados nos livros didáticos devem comunicar expondo a cultura do Outro de forma adequada ao leitor alvo. A maioria dos textos apresentados aqui é composta por diferentes gêneros textuais para serem apresentados no livro didático. Segundo o funcionalismo, quando há mudança de leitor alvo, deve-se fazer uma adaptação textual, segundo o perfil sócio-cultural deste novo leitor

El programa iconográfico establecido entre las imágenes presenta el anuncio de la llegada del Mesías y su respectivo cumplimiento, que se configura a partir de un repertorio único de 16 profetas y 4 escenas de la infancia de Cristo en la planta baja, así como la presencia del mundo de los gentiles a través de otra serie de medallones con personajes de la Antigüedad clásica en las enjutas de los arcos del sobreclaustro. El conjunto se erige como discurso visual monumental pétreo con el misterio central para el tomismo como hilo conductor, que adquiría sentido en las numerosas procesiones y en la contemplación cotidiana por la comunidad religiosa. [ENG] We study the medallions and reliefs of the processions cloister of the Dominican convent of San Esteban de Salamanca, executed between 1533 and 1544. The iconographic program established between the images presents the announcement of the arrival of the Messiah and its respective fulfilment, which is configured from a unique repertoire of 16 prophets and 4 scenes from the infancy of Christ on the ground floor, as well as the presence of the world of the gentiles through another series of medallions with classical characters on the spandrels of the arches on the upper floor. The ensemble stands as a monumental visual discourse with the central mystery for Thomism as a common thread, which acquired meaning in the numerous processions and in daily contemplation by the religious community
Can T Tauri stars produce high-energy radiation?
No full textT Tauri stars are low mass, pre-main sequencestars. These objects are surrounded by an accretion disk and present strongmagnetic activity. T Tauri stars are copious X-rays emitters. The X-rays arelikely generated by powerful magnetic reconnection events.Strong shocks can be produced by massive reconnection in the stellar magnetosphere. These shocks or the reconnection of the field might accelerate particles up to relativistic energies, as observed in the Sun.We present a model for the high-energy radiation produced in themagnetosphere of T Tauri stars. Symmetry-breaking and Multiple Solutions For A Neumann Problem In An Exterior Domain
No full textIn this paper we prove existence of multiple positive solutions for a Neumann problem in R(N)\B(0, R), R large, with a superquadratic and odd nonlinearity. The proof is based on the fact that in such a situation the minimum of the corresponding energy functional (which is achieved) is not an even function and that there is quite a large gap (for large R) between such a minimum and the minimum of the same functional on even functions. In the set of functions whose energy lies in such a gap, we can apply index theory to prove the desired multiplicity result
