Economic Disparities and Life Satisfaction in European Regions
This paper investigates the role of economic variables in predicting regional disparities in reported life satisfaction of European Union (EU) citizens. European subnational units (regions) are defined according to the first-level EU nomenclature of territorial units. We use multilevel modeling to explicitly account for the hierarchical nature of our data, respondents within regions and countries, and for understanding patterns of variation within and between regions. Main findings are that personal income matters more in poor regions than in rich regions, a pattern that still holds for regions within the same country. Being unemployed is negatively associated with life satisfaction even after controlled for income variation. Living in high unemployment regions does not alleviate the unhappiness of being out of work. After controlling for individual characteristics and modeling interactions, regional differences in life satisfaction still remain, confirming that regional dimension is relevant for life satisfaction
A weakly informative default prior distribution for logistic and other regression models
We propose a new prior distribution for classical (nonhierarchical) logistic regression models, constructed by first scaling all nonbinary variables to have mean 0 and standard deviation 0.5, and then placing independent Student-t prior distributions on the coefficients. As a default choice, we recommend the Cauchy distribution with center 0 and scale 2.5, which in the simplest setting is a longer-tailed version of the distribution attained by assuming one-half additional success and one-half additional failure in a logistic regression. Cross-validation on a corpus of datasets shows the Cauchy class of prior distributions to outperform existing implementations of Gaussian and Laplace priors. We recommend this prior distribution as a default choice for routine applied use. It has the advantage of always giving answers, even when there is complete separation in logistic regression (a common problem, even when the sample size is large and the number of predictors is small), and also automatically applying more shrinkage to higher-order interactions. This can be useful in routine data analysis as well as in automated procedures such as chained equations for missing-data imputation. We implement a procedure to fit generalized linear models in R with the Student-t prior distribution by incorporating an approximate EM algorithm into the usual iteratively weighted least squares. We illustrate with several applications, including a series of logistic regressions predicting voting preferences, a small bioassay experiment, and an imputation model for a public health data set. © Institute of Mathematical Statistics
Deliberation, deference and Interamerican Court of Human Rights. Case Gelman vs Uruguay

Absence, defeat and resistance: Juan Gelman\'s poetry in exile
Para isto, foi necessário também, pesquisar sobre o contexto histórico argentino, bem como aspectos biográficos do autor relevantes para o desenvolvimento da dissertaçãoThe present dissertation dedicates to analyze seven poems from the poet Juan Gelman (1930-2014) that appear in five different books, with a goal to investigate how the exile manifests itself in such poems and in his work, especially throughout the years that separates the publications.
This research shows how the image of an author can be manipulated by the exercise of criticism. In 1971, Mario Benedetti published Los poetas comunicantes, a book that include interviews with some left-wing Latin American poets: Roberto Fernández Retamar, Ernesto Cardenal, Roque Dalton, Nicanor Parra, Eliseo Diego, Juan Gelman, among others. The present article tries to demonstrate that by presenting Gelman as a “poeta comunicante” (in another words, a colloquial poet),Benedetti only shows one profi le of the Argentine poet: on the Communist poet who writes under the mandates of “social realism”. However, in the mid-1960s Gelman’s poetry takes a signifi cant turn that matches his break with the Communist Party.Gelman moves away from “social realism” and investigates other voices, other rooms.

This paper brings out many characteristics between the historiography work and the life of Juan Carlos Garavaglia. Those links, coloured by some personal anecdotes (which are in part already published in Una juventud en los años sesenta and some other which are called by the author for this occasion), show how different aspects of temperament and talent of the author of Mercado Interno…were manifested along his work and his relationships. The extensive interests, the daring of his proposals, the depth of approaches or the passion for the outside-observing are some of the faces of a portrait that Jorge Gelman, friend and colleague of Juan Carlos, left us just a few days before passing away himself, too early as well.
This research project is based on one of the predominant themes in the poetic production of Juan Gelman (Argentina, 1930-Mexico, 2014): death, seen from different approaches and driven by his traumatic experience in exile. The main objective is to assess the representation of the thanatic or mortuary theme in Translations III. The poems of Sidney West (1969) by Juan Gelman. This descriptive study began with an exhibition on the representation of the theme of death in universal and Latin American poetry. It provided theoretical details on the epitaph as a lyrical expression to conclude with analyzing the poems belonging to the text in question. Through a hermeneutical and analytical methodology, the literary context was studied and the stylistic resources used by the author, based on a better understanding of the representation of the theme of death in his poetic work.

Taylor Abstract: Foreign exchange rates, asset prices and capital movements are expected to be closely related to each other as international capital markets become more and more integrated. This paper provides new empirical evidence from an index of exchange-rate adjusted cross-country asset price ratios, which may be interpreted as a real effective financial exchange rate. The integrated stock-flow approach reveals that a county's real effective financial exchange rate is co-integrated with international investors' net foreign holding of its assets. The associated error correction equations have useful interpretations against the backdrop of uncovered return parity and investor portfolio rebalancing behavior. Innovation in Property Rights and Economic Development in Lombardy, Eighteenth-Twentieth centuries
The essay deals with the role of state led institutional reforms in property rights since the second half of the eighteenth century to modernize Lombard agriculture and to accelerate economic development. The essay is organized into five sections. The first presents the historical setting in which the reforms operated. The second provides an analysis of the cadastral reforms and their impacts on Lombard agriculture. The third presents the main issues referring to some comparative cases. The fourth attempts a systematization of the historical, social and cultural factors that mediated the concrete implementation of property rights. The fifth and final section presents concluding remarks
