    Barbi Eysselinck was Faculty Services Coordinator at the American University in Cairo from 1987-1994, and returned to AUC in the early 2000s, working in the library. She recalls her family’s arrival in Egypt in 1985, and describes how her husband Walter Eysselinck developed AUC’s Theater Program, and later chaired the new Theater, Music, Arts, and Film (later Performing and Visual Arts) Department. She speaks about other arts and theater faculty, arts initiatives like the Cairo Choral Society, and visiting performers at AUC. Her own study of anthropology at AUC is mentioned. Barbi discusses her role as AUC’s Faculty Services Coordinator, offering anecdotes about trips and events she arranged, and indicating the services the university provided (orientation, housing, etc.) to support faculty and their families. Having made a return to Cairo in the early 2000s, she mentions her work at the Rare Books and Special Collections Library. Barbi provides a detailed portrait of life for a foreigner in Cairo in the 1980s and 1990s, making comparisons with the 2000s and 2010s. She tells stories of her family’s adjustment to Egypt in the 1980s, in terms of the challenges of shopping for food and clothing, and the limited availability of household appliances and other conveniences, but the general ease in dealing with those limitations. Her children’s education at Cairo American College also receives attention. Recreation, entertainment, and social life are covered, along with owning and driving a car in Egypt, and travel in the country and abroad. Eysselinck gives a description of Maadi, the district where she lived in the 1980s and 1990s, from its houses to restaurants to residents, and explains how the neighborhood changed over the years. Barbi also makes observations about Egypt, from local arts and crafts, to changes in the way people dressed, to street harassment of women. Eysselinck also offers a sketch of personalities at AUC, from President Richard Pedersen to airport greeter Abdel Messih Meawad, as well as local cultural notables like artist Margo Veillon and author Naguib Mahfouz

    Acute urticaria is a frequent benign disease in children and is often secondary to infections. Usually it is a self-limited histamine-dependent cutaneous condition marked by transient, erythematous, and pruritic wheals and frequently by acral angioedema. A haemorrhagic pattern characterised by annular and polycyclic lesions with central ecchymosis is a possible presentation especially in young children and it can be so alarming as to cause hospital admission. Establishing the correct diagnosis of acute annular urticaria (a morphologic subtype of simple infectious urticaria recently referred as urticaria multiforme) is important to prevent an unnecessary diagnostic work up. In an otherwise well-appearing child erythema multiforme, serum sickness-like reaction and acute haemorrhagic oedema of infancy are the principal differential diagnoses. A direct history and physical examination can reliably distinguish all these conditions, avoiding laboratory investigations and allowing appropriate treatment. Reassurance and oral non-sedating antihistamine therapy are sufficient

    Pediatric endocrinology through syndromes

    In everyday practice, a pediatric endocrinologist will face a variety of different endocrine issues (such as short or tall stature, dysthyroidism, abnormal pubertal timing or impaired glucose metabolism), which relevantly contribute to the global care of a number of syndromic conditions. On the other hand, the presence of endocrine features may assist in the diagnostic process, leading to final diagnosis of a syndromic disorder. The intention of this review is to provide a referenced overview of different genetic syndromes characterized by endocrine features, and to present a possible classification, based on whether the endocrinopathy or the syndrome is typically recognized first. Thus, the first part of the manuscript deals with the most common syndromes associated with endocrine dysfunctions, while the second part describes the conditions by which a syndrome is most frequently diagnosed after an endocrine finding. The aim is to provide a practical overview of the assessment of syndromic patients, so that they can be recognized and managed in an integrated, multidisciplinary fashion

    formulation. This type of bioplastic can replace the actual materials employed in agriculture, avoiding the critical issues concerning the soil pollution due to conventional plastic end-life. Different plasticizing agents (glycerol and polyethylene glycol) have been tested and the ability to generate a homogenous film, through wet casting, has been evaluated. Characterizations on tensile properties and water absorbance have been performed to estimate the effect of different plasticizers employed. Bioplastic formed by proteins/glycerol ratio 50:50 has shown interesting properties, contributing to the formation of homogeneous and free-standing film with tensile stress at break near to 2.5MPa, almost constant during degradation profile test. At the same time the high degree of solubility in water has been verified for the same sample (~70%). The environmental impact of the laboratory scale production of bioplastics obtained from BSFs proteins has been evaluated through the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. Inventory analysis has been conducted using primary data and Ecoinvent database. LCA analysis has been conducted using the SimaPro 8.3 software and the IMPACT 2002+ method of evaluation. The analysis show that the energy consumption is high (63%), but this can be mainly attributed to a laboratory-scale production process and related with the energy consumption of aspiration system (93%). Therefore, these results will help to the design of industrial production of innovative bioplastics in order to minimize these environmental issue

    Stabilization of ratchet dynamics by weak periodic signals

    We study the influence of weak periodic signals on the transport properties of underdamped ratchets. We find that the constant current intervals related to the ratchet can be significantly enlarged by a weak subharmonic signal that is in phase with the internal driver. This stabilization phenomenon is found to exist both in absence and in presence of noise. The dependence of this effect on the phase of the applied signal is also investigated
