Exploring the segregation of commercial land use by gender in the city centre of Biskra, Algeria - A syntactic study, the movement economy process.

    No full text
Gender segregation is considered a significant problem in the modern period, where urban planning may play a role in facilitating male and female use of public spaces, or overlook their different needs in the city. Urban spatial use has been linked to many factors in previous studies. One important factor to consider here is the pattern of land-use and its capability of affecting the movement behaviour of people in the city. In space syntax theory, it has been assumed that the distribution of shops exists to take advantage of people’s movement, which is generated by the urban structure itself. In this regard, this paper aims to identify the factors behind land-use segregation between shops for each gender in the city centre of Biskra, and whether this has resulted in gender segregation in urban spatial use, leading to the distinct location of services within the city centre, creating men’s and women’s spaces. This investigation has been conducted by using surveys of shops as well as syntactic analyses, paired together in order to reach an understanding of this phenomenon. The findings showed that at a global scale, the higher the street is integrated, the higher the land-use mixture tends to be, while at a local scale there was no correlation found in term of men’s and women’s segregation of land-use, which may rather be related to locals using their prior knowledge of a space rather than the information cues provided by its structure

Big Automotive Data Analytics Scenarios - PART OF THE FFI BADA PROJECT

    No full text
This report is part of the FFI1 BADA project which explores future business models and ecosystems of ‘Big Automotive Data Analytics’. The automotive industry is facing a digital revolution that is poised to change the competitive landscape fundamentally. Data driven services based on advanced analytics will play an increasingly important part. In a future ecosystem, it will likely be decisive to manage data and control the system, not to focus on individual vehicles. The future holds great promise for OEMs, the public sector and society as a whole. Vehicles incresaingly act as sensors in the road network, collecting vast amounts of data that can be combined with other types of data and used for a wide variety of purposes, increasing the effectiveness of the transportation system. However, there are several challenges for society and the automotive industry that must be met Before such promises are realized. As future events unfold and influence each other, analysis becomes increasingly speculative and fuzzy. To better gauge the nature of these future events, and generate ideas of possible end states and their implications, a scenario planning activity was initiated. The scenarios and their implications are a result of workshop sessions and insights from experts in the field of big automotive data analytics representing cities, OEMs, telecom and authorities. The process of selecting key factors and gauging their possible projections is designed to facilitate the creation of plausible and distinct future scenarios. However, these scenarios are not to be mistaken for predictions or forecasts. Scenarios fill a different purpose than strict trend analysis striving to estimate the probability of a given future end state. Instead scenarios allow for the generation of plausible thought provoking futures, each with a distinct set of implications that can be used by participants and others to generate a broad contingency plan. We have presented three distinct futures with varying threats and opportunities for all actors in a future BADA ecosystem. While the ecosystem model of the main BADA project report will look similar in all scenarios, the relative importance of the components of the ecosystem will be very scenario-specific. OEMs and public actors will assume radically different positions, occupying several or few niches in the ecosystem, and their opportunities for action will be influenced accordingly.BADA (Big automotive data analytics

Cyber Security Awareness Campaigns: Why do they fail to change behaviour?

    No full text
This paper by Dr. Maria Bada and Professor Angela Sasse focuses on Security Awareness Campaigns, trying to identify factors which potentially lead to failure of these in changing the information security behaviours of consumers and employees. Past and current efforts to improve information security practices have not had the desired effort. In this paper, we explain the challenges involved in improving information security behaviours. Changing behaviour requires more than giving information about risks and correct behaviours – firstly, the people must be able to understand and apply the advice, and secondly, they must be willing to do – and the latter requires changes to attitudes and intentions. These antecedents of behaviour change are identified in several psychological models of behaviour (e.g. theory of reasoned action, theory of planned behaviour, protection motivation theory). We review the suitability of persuasion techniques, including the widely used fear appeals. Essential components for an awareness campaign as well as factors which can lead to a campaign’s failure are also discussed. In order to enact change, the current sources of influence-whether they are conscious or unconscious, personal, environmental or social, which are keeping people from enacting vital behaviours, need to be identified. Cultural differences in risk perceptions can also influence the maintenance of a particular way of life. Finally, since the vast majority of behaviours are habitual, the change from existing habits to better information security habits requires support. Finally, we present examples of existing awareness campaigns in U.K., in Australia, in Canada and Africa

Sociology of fear of crime in Latin America

    No full text
Independently of the varying national homicide indexes, the fear of crime affects all sociopolitical dimensions across Latin American countries and influences the agendas of political parties, security markets, and everyday life. This contribution presents an overview on the fear of crime and insecurity studies in the region, focusing on two main fields: fear of crime studies showcasing similarities and differences among Latin American countries in terms of the relationship between fear and victimization, gender, class, age, and community cohesion perceptions, and the socio-cultural dimension to this phenomenon, including media influences on the fear of delinquency, the role of the state, and the general climate of ontological insecurity.Fil: Kessler, Gabriel. Modeling Tail-Specific Performance Using Historical Flight Data and Machine-Learning Techniques

    No full text
Aircraft performance has always been a focus of attention in aviation. The work of aircraft designers, certifying agencies, aircraft operators, and air traffic controllers relies on aircraft performance models. Current aircraft performance models are based on performance data of brand-new aircraft, independent of airline configuration and customizations. Nonetheless, over time aircraft suffer structure, engine and aerodynamic deterioration, as well as maintenance actions. These factors, which vary with tail number, make aircraft performance deviate from the theoretical and create the need for aircraft performance monitoring, and ultimately for aircraft performance tailoring. This thesis proposes two novel approaches to develop up-to-date, tail-specific performance models. These approaches are based on the use of historical flight data, namely Quick Access Recorder (QAR) data, and machine-learning techniques. First, a methodology is designed to calibrate Base of Aircraft DAta (BADA), a widely consolidated physics-based performance model. As a result, more accurate performance models are generated, maintaining the same applicability over the entire flight envelope and during all phases of flight as BADA nominal models. The second approach is purely data-driven, and in contrast to the first approach, describes aircraft performance without modeling the underlying physics. The resulting models proved to be more accurate tan BADA nominal models. Additionally, they provided insights on the parameters that have a significant impact on aircraft performance. This research project is the first to provide a comparison between physics-based and non-physics-based performance tailoring approaches. Despite the differences in accuracy achieved with both methods, each one has its own advantages and disadvantages. What approach to follow is determined first by the application, and secondly by the demanded level of accuracy.Aerospace Engineerin

Introduzione "Ai margini dell’umano. Luoghi, scrittura e pensiero di Anna Maria Ortese"

    No full text

    No full text
The article describes the Polish Pavilion at the Biennale Arte (2022), where, due to the works of Małgorzata Mirga-Tas, the “re-enchantment” of Romani people history took place. At the exhibition, the artist representing Poland presented the alternative history of the Romani or – using Ariella A. Azoulay’s term – “potential” history. The author of the article examines how Mirga-Tas implements the idea of community, while making space for the individual. The artist, without any Romani representations, created her own graphic fantasy, rejecting historical testimonies; the fantasy presented in the text as an identity attempt and the creation of a collective self-portrait at the same time. In the second part of the article, the author inquires if the concept of “re-enchantment” can be used in didactics of the Polish language and reflects on the question of how to emancipate Romani culture at school in order to work through the one-dimensional image of the Romani described as the Other of Europe. The essence of re-enchantment lies in repairing what has been damaged by violence or prejudice.W artykule opisano Pawilon Polski na Biennale w Wenecji (2022), na którym za pośrednictwem prac Małgorzaty Mirgi-Tas dokonało się tytułowe „przeczarowanie” historii Romów.
