An Experimental Comparison of RISC-V Processors: Performance, Power, Area and Security - Special Session Paper
The RISC-V instruction set architecture (ISA) has garnered significant interest from both industry and academia because of its open source nature. Recent years have witnessed a surge in published implementations of the RISC-V ISA, with various companies actively pursuing its adoption in their products. However, a comprehensive analysis comparing these emerging RISC-V processors with each other and against established embedded computing platforms has not yet been published. This paper presents an experimental evaluation of three high-performance RISC-V processors: BOOM, NOEL-V, and CVA6 (formerly Ariane). The investigation is conducted on a Xilinx Kintex-7 Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) platform. We perform a detailed analysis of critical performance metrics, covering area footprint, power consumption, and performance efficiency. Additionally, we assess the security posture of these cores against transient execution attacks, a prominent contemporary security threat. Finally, a comparative evaluation is undertaken between the RISC-V processors and two conventional application-level ARM processors to elucidate technological discrepancies and application suitability. This analysis aims to provide valuable insights into the current state and potential of RISC-V processors within the embedded computing domain
Lightweight Instrumentation for Accurate Performance Monitoring in RTOSes
Evaluating performance metrics in embedded systems poses challenges, particularly due to the limited set of tools available for monitoring performance counters. In addition, performance evaluation frameworks for Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOSes) often lack the sophistication and capabilities available in general-purpose operating systems like Linux, which benefit from utilities such as perf_event. To bridge this gap, this paper presents an accurate and low-overhead instrumentation utility tailored for RTOSes. Our approach utilizes performance monitoring counters to observe individual user applications within the RTOS environment. Importantly, it enables comprehensive application monitoring by strategically placing probes at points of inherent system interference, thereby minimizing additional overhead. A pre-calibration of these probes allows for fine-grained measurements within user applications. This results in the elimination of 100 % of the overheads for most counters in our test configuration, impacting the context switch by only three additional instructions per monitored counter

Nanoparticles exhibiting self-regulating temperature as innovative agents for Magnetic Fluid Hyperthermia
During the last few years, for therapeutic purposes in oncology, considerable attention has been focused on a method called magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH) based on local heating of tumor cells. In this paper, an innovative, promising nanomaterial, M48 composed of iron oxide-based phases has been tested. M48 shows self-regulating temperature due to the observable second order magnetic phase transition from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic state. A specific hydrophilic coating based on both citrate ions and glucose molecules allows high biocompatibility of the nanomaterial in biological matrices and its use in vivo. MFH mediator efficiency is demonstrated in vitro and in vivo in breast cancer cells and tumors, confirming excellent features for biomedical application. The temperature increase, up to the Curie temperature, gives rise to a phase transition from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic state, promoting a shortage of the r2 transversal relaxivity that allows a switch in the contrast in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Combining this feature with a competitive high transversal (spin-spin) relaxivity, M48 paves the way for a new class of temperature sensitive T2 relaxing contrast agents. Overall, the results obtained in this study prepare for a more affordable and tunable heating mechanism preventing the damages of the surrounding healthy tissues and, at the same time, allowing monitoring of the temperature reached
Socio-political radicalization in the United States. The rise of neo-nationalism and Cancel Culture since the 1970s.
The demographic prospects for the next two decades suggest a particularly interesting picture of the United States of America, a country that by 2040 will see a dramatic increase in the number of inhabitants on its territory. The increase in population is, in itself, an interesting fact, but it does not allow us to grasp the real scope of the coming change. According to estimates, in fact, the characteristics of this population will be essentially two: elderly and multiethnic. The peculiarities of the demos of the future stars and stripes will open controversial scenarios that will affect every aspect of the U.S. architecture, from voting mechanisms, through the functioning of the institutions, to political representation.
Knowing the composition of the population is a factor of primary importance for political actors who, basing themselves on this data, can study their strategy and consequently understand which electorate to address and with which message, a difficult task considering the great impact of the populist and neo-nationalist winds that have blown over Western politics in the last decade. American neo-nationalism will be investigated several times in this paper, shedding light on some stages of American history. that have irreversibly favored the advent of this sentiment among the militants, especially of the Republican Party.
The polarization and the progressive radicalization of the debate, are themes inextricably linked to these feelings, cultivated with the complicity of the great sociocultural changes that have helped to crumble the four great narratives on which the social, political and economic principles of the Nation have always been based: The Triumphant Individual, The Bevevolent Community, The Rot at the Top and The Mob at the Gates.
This climate led in 2016 to the election of Donald Trump to the White House,
an event of total rupture with respect to the previous terms of Barack Obama, a fact that, with hindsight, appears consistent with respect to the maturity of neo-nationalist sentiment that found in the election of the first African American president the sap necessary to emerge.
However, to reduce the phenomenon of polarization to the Trump presidency would be a mistake. Over the past seventy years, there have been social, cultural, and economic events that have progressively pushed circumstances in this direction, and analyzing them is the most comprehensive way possible to arrive at a picture of clarity.
In different measures, Sixty-Eight, the economic crisis of 2008, Black Lives Matter, and deepening economic inequalities have put parties in the position of repositioning themselves step by step. In a system where the center is gradually disappearing in an increasingly polarized and intolerant society, the parties, in an attempt to accommodate the demands of the largest slice of the electorate, follow the path giving rise to what we might call the "crisis of compromise".
What we are wondering about considering the state of health of the demos and democracy itself, is not how long it will last but how. Whether the effects of woke culture and right-wing extremism will be the exclusive product of a complex historical period, or whether this new, extremely intolerant and divisive social order will lay the groundwork for civil conflicts in the wake of the assault on Capitol Hill.
This complex question requires the analysis of complex phenomena: in this paper the main events and contexts will be investigated

Effects of algal extracts (Polysiphonia fucoides) on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss): A biomarker approach
The genotoxicity of algal extracts (Polysiphonia fucoides) was investigated in erythrocytes of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Trout were exposed to 0.5% of the algal extract for 7 days. Comet assay (alkaline and neutral versions) and Micronucleus test were used to assess DNA damage, and Diffusion Assay to detect apoptotic cells. EROD activities and oxidative stress parameters in rainbow trout liver were also measured. A significant induction of DNA single strand breaks comparable to the ones induced by the in vivo exposure to 20 mg/kg B[a]P was observed at the end of the treatment, while increases of double strand breaks and apoptotic cells were not observed. The absence of activation of antioxidant responses seems to underline a mechanism of action of the genotoxic algal extract which does not involve oxidative stress
DNA damage in Eelpout (Zoarces viviparus) from the Göteborg harbour
The relationship between DNA damage and the exposure of marine organisms to environmental contaminants was examined in the Göteborg harbour area. This research is part of a wider ecotoxicological study planned to evaluate the biological impact of chemical contamination in the River Göta estuary, following a bunker oil (10-100 tonnes) spill occurred in June 2003. Here we present data on the DNA strand breaks derived using the comet assay and the presence of apoptotic cells using the diffusion assay in nucleated erythrocytes of the eelpout (Zoarces viviparus) from the study area and at a clean reference site. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon metabolites were also analyzed in the bile of exposed fish. The results showed a high level of damaged DNA, paralleled by a peak in bile PAH metabolites, in fish from the most impacted site, 3 weeks after the oil spill. A significant recovery was observed in specimens from the spill site, 5 months later, but not in fish caught in the middle part of Göteborg harbour, which is chronically subjected to heavy chemical pollution. The levels of apoptic cells did not show any marked variations, but a significant recovery was observed in fish from the oil impacted site 5 months after the spill
