The National Museum of Costa Rica is one of the primary sources of information on botanical species at the national level. Its records, begun in 1848, include 95% of the country's expected plant species, which correspond to 500,000 specimens from the Plantae kingdom. Currently, the museum has a single species collection methodology, which is based solely on geographic data. Therefore, decision-making regarding collection strategies is limited. This project proposes a strategy for data visualization of the samples collected from the Plantae kingdom by experts from the National Museum of Costa Rica. The information visualization proposal incorporates variables such as taxonomic characteristics, attributes, time ranges, and location to facilitate the creation of collection methodologies. This new visualization aims to contribute to processes developed by the researchers of the National Museum of Costa Rica, such as making predictions, preventing changes, carrying out optimized management of resources, and achieving conservation of the most necessary species.Museo Nacional de Costa Ric

    No full text
This article analyses the referendum on the Free Trade Agreement with the United States, Central America and the Dominican Republic (CAFTA), which took place in Costa Rica during 2007. The premise of the author is that, due to its great political significance and its socio-political complexity, the referendum must be analyzed from various approaches, including political communication. From that perspective, the author points out several elements: first, the media structures in which the communication campaigns, in favor and against, were developed. This includes television, radio, newspapers and Internet. Second, the referendum’s rules of the game, including the issues of funding, the media agenda setting, the role of the Executive and, finally, the strategy and content of the campaigns developed by the groups in favor (Yes) and against (No) CAFTA. Internet deserves special mention as a new arena of contention communications in Costa Rica. Throughout the article, the author showed evidence of the inequality in the rules of the game, economic resources and media agendas, including the use of fear as political resource, which clearly favored groups that supported CAFTA, but that substantially limited the democratic content of the referendum. The article concludes pointing out lessons and aspects that should be modified in order to democratize referendum in Costa Rica.

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Judicial Risk and Credit Market Performance: Micro Evidence from Brazil Payroll Loans

    No full text
A large body of literature has stressed the institution-development nexus as critical in explaining differences in countries' economic performance. The empirical evidence, however, has been mainly at the aggregate level, associating macro performance with measures of quality of institutions. This paper, by relating a judicial decision on the legality of payroll debit loans in Brazil to bank-level decision variables, provides micro evidence on how creditor legal protection affects market performance. Payroll loans are personal loans with principal and interests payments directly deducted from the borrowers' payroll check, which, in practice, makes a collateral out of future income. In June 2004, a high-level federal court upheld a regional court ruling that had declared payroll deduction illegal. Using personal loans without payroll deduction as a control group, we assess whether the ruling had an impact on market performance. Evidence indicates that it had an adverse impact on risk perception, interest rates, and amount lent.

Sectoral allocation by gender of Latin American workers over the liberalization period of the 1990s

    No full text
The recent restructuring of Latin American economies has renewed interest in the effects of trade liberalization, on labor markets, and on the gender division of labor. The author does not attempt to establish casuality between economic reforms, and the types of jobs that men and women hold. Instead, she provides a detailed description of the trends in male, and female formal, and informal sector participation during the economic reform period in Argentina, Brazil, and Costa Rica. The author first compares the gender composition of the formal, informal wage, and self-employment sectors in a year before reforms (1988 for Argentina, 1989 for Brazil, and Costa Rica), and a year after reforms implementation (1997 for Argentina, 1995 for Brazil and Costa Rica). Although women continued to be more likely than men to work in the informal wage sector, there is no trend of"masculinization"or"feminization"of the informal sector, or any other. Instead, in Argentina men have overtaken women as the most prevalent workers in the informal wage sector, while in Brazil, the opposite has occurred (as men move into self-employment). In Costa Rica there have been no statistical, observable changes. The author then considers the distribution across sectors within each gender group, to identify whether men, and women are more likely to select different sectors in the post-reform period relative to the pre-reform period. Among both men, and women in all three countries (except Brazilian men), workers have become more likely to hold informal wage jobs, and less likely to hold formal sector jobs. Trends in human capital accumulation explain these changes for both men, and women, while changes in gender roles, primarily in homecare and marriage, do not seem to have an effect.Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Labor Policies,Population&Development,Public Health Promotion,Environmental Economics&Policies,Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Environmental Economics&Policies,Population&Development,Banks&Banking Reform,Work&Working Conditions
