MEASUREMENT OF LOW AND HIGH FREQUENCY ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS IN A SOUTHERN SALENTO TOWN(ITALY)

In recent years, industrial and technological development has led to a remarkable increase in the environment of non-ionizing radiation produced by artificial sources. The increased production and geographical spread of electromagnetic fields may be dangerous for the health of people exposed to them. Therefore, we carried out a survey of low- and high- frequency emission sources, measuring the intensity of the electromagnetic fields and characterising the emission systems in the district of Otranto in southern Italy. The low-frequency electromagnetic fields were measured using a PMM 8053 portable gauge for the frequency interval 5Hz-100kHz, a Wandel & Goltermann EMR 300 portable gauge for the 100 kHz-3GHz frequency interval and a HI-4455 probe for the 200 kHz-40 GHz frequency interval. The results of our measurements showed that the emissions for low and high frequencies were within the limits specified by the regulations in force. The only exception was a radio mast at point n. 10 (Masseria Uliveto) near which a value of 10.1 V/m above both the warning value and the quality target value specified by the Prime Minister’s Decree (P.M.D.) of 8th July 2003. However, these limits must be considered the minimum requirement consistent with the general aim of reducing exposure where technically possible and where conditions allow

Nickel- and/or iron-based ceria-supported catalysts for CO oxidation in combustion exhaust gases

We present a series of Ni, Fe, and mixed NiFe-based catalysts, deposited onto ceria prepared with either soft templated (with CTAB) or hard templated (with SBA-15) syntheses. The prepared materials were thoroughly characterized with SEM, HRTEM, EDX, ICP-MS, PXRD, and N2 adsorption techniques, to fully comprehend their physicochemical properties. All catalysts were then tested for carbon monoxide oxidation reaction at different temperatures, aiming to reach temperature and feed composition conditions typical of combustion exhausts from industrial and power plants (350-400 ◦C, in the presence of competitive species such as CO2 and H2O in the feed). Advanced reaction tests highlighted outstanding materials (especially NiFe catalyst deposited onto hard templated ceria), displaying catalytic performances able to compete with those typical of noble metal–based catalysts. Such catalysts were further investigated by means of Raman, NEXAFS, H2-TPR, and CO-FTIR, unraveling their surface and reduction properties, which make them excellent candidates for replacing more costly noble metal-based catalysts currently employed for CO oxidation reaction

    No full text
The present study is aimed to assess the efficacy of a computer-based alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) program, for two children with cerebral palsy and multiple disabilities. Results show that both participants increase their communication skills during intervention and post-intervention phases. Undergraduate students involved as raters in a social validation procedure provide scores that are compatible with the hypothesis of rehabilitation worth of the intervention. These results support the clinical validity of the computer-mediate AAC intervention for children with multiple/profound disabilities

International audienceAs a philosopher interested in anthropology that brings us closer to the concrete, I would like to report on my reading of Norbert Rouland's latest book, Ciels au-delà du ciel-La Chine et les Chinois : croiser nos regards, Paris, Pacifica, 2022. The author is not only a lawyer but also an anthropologist who visited China several times at the end of the last century. This book brings together three types of theme, all centred on the idea of pluralism: the plurality of conceptions of human rights and democracy, the plurality of developments in the status of women, and the plurality of developments in anthropology.

Aquaporin-4 expression levels and mis-localization are inversely linked to peritumoral edema in gliomas of varying aggressiveness

Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) and its extended isoform, AQP4ex, are crucial for regulating brain water homeostasis. Mis-localization of these isoforms is implicated in various brain tumors, including glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). This study explores AQP4 isoform expression and localization in Pilocytic Astrocytomas (PA), a circumscribed astrocytic low-grade glioma, compared to GBM, an adult-type diffuse high grade glioma. We found significant upregulation of AQP4 and AQP4ex in PA, with notable mis-localization deviating from the typical perivascular localization seen in healthy tissue. This mis-localization mirrors the phenotype observed in AQP4ex knockout models, where impaired AQP4 localization is linked to disrupted water homeostasis and reduced waste clearance, despite overall increased AQP4 levels. Interestingly, PA shows minimal peritumoral edema and a relatively intact blood-brain barrier (BBB), with elevated phosphorylated AQP4ex (pAQP4ex) suggesting a role in stabilizing AQP4 function. In contrast, GBM exhibits reduced AQP4/AQP4ex expression, significant peritumoral edema, and BBB disruption. GFAP isoforms, GFAPκ and GFAPδ, are upregulated in PA, associated with Rosenthal fibers, indicating a stabilizing astrocytic response. GBM, however, shows generalized GFAP increase, reflecting aggressive gliosis and disrupted water homeostasis. In conclusion, both AQP4 expression levels and mis-localization are important factors influencing peritumoral edema and tumor aggressiveness in gliomas. This study positions AQP4 as a potential biomarker for glioma progression, offering insights into astrocytic function and paving the way for targeted therapies.
