    The ATLAS Fast TracKer

    No full text
The Fast Tracker (FTK) is a highly parallel processor dedicated to quickly and efficiently reconstructing tracks in the pixel and SCT detectors of the ATLAS experiment at LHC. It is designed to identify charged particle tracks with transverse momentum above 1 GeV and reconstruct their parameters at an event rate of up to 100kHz. The average latency of the processing is below 100 microseconds at the expected collision intensities. This performance is achieved by using custom ASIC chips with associative memory for pattern matching, while modern FPGAs calculate the track parameters. In this article is described the architecture of the FTK system, the testing and commissioning of the Associative Memory Boards (AMB) and a High-Level Data Quality Monitoring framework. This monitoring framework provides an online comparison of the FTK hardware outputs with FTK functional simulation, which is run on the pixel and SCT detector data at a low rate, allowing the detection of non-expected outputs of the FTK system

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) holds a central role within the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics, providing an explanation for the origin of elementary particle masses through their interactions with the Higgs field. Since the discovery of the Higgs boson, in-depth investigations into EWSB have become a primary focus of research at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In addition to directly studying the properties of the Higgs boson, the scattering of two massive vector bosons (VBS) offers a vital avenue for probing the mechanisms of EWSB. At the LHC, VBS processes are initiated through proton-proton collisions, where initial state quarks emit two vector bosons that subsequently interact to produce another pair of vector bosons. These processes have been observed in various massive boson channels, including WW, WZ, ZZ, Zγ, and Wγ channels, although it is important to conduct more comprehensive measurements of the VBS processes to enhance our understanding of the EWSB. This analysis presents detailed differential cross-section measurements of several kinematic variables in both the VBS-enhanced and VBS-suppressed regions within the ZZjj channel. The measurements are based on proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of √s = 13 TeV, utilizing an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1 . In the VBS ZZjj channel, both Z bosons decay into pairs of charged leptons (ee or μμ). This specific final state offers sensitivity to both the strong 4ljj process, where jets originate from strong interactions, and the electroweak 4ljj process, characterized by the t-channel exchange of an electroweak boson. In addition to these measurements, further explorations will be undertaken to interpret these results in the context of Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) theories based on the expected and observed event yields. More particularly, the thesis explores the sensitivity of the anomalous Quartic Gauge Couplings (aQGC) to describe deviations from the SM in the context of the VBS. Key findings are summarized, including the contribution and sensitivity of various QGC operators to the total cross-section of the VBS ZZjj process and also the significance of kinematic variables, such as the invariant mass of the Z-boson pair, as probes for QGC effects. In addition, the use of Optimal Observables distributions to estimate anomalous QGCs is explored, highlighting their potential to enhance the limits on the Wilson dimension-8 coefficients. Moreover, a particular emphasis in this research has been placed on the Fast TracKer (FTK) system, a dedicated hardware solution for the Trigger and Data Acquisition system of the ATLAS detector, designed for the recognition and reconstruction of all tracks with transverse momentum (pT) exceeding 1 GeV. The complexity of the FTK system is evident through the integration of numerous electronic devices. Among these, the Associated Memory (AM) chips are particularly important, which store pre-simulated track patterns and compare them with patterns in the real data. A substantial portion of this work was dedicated to testing, debugging, and commissioning the Associative Memory Boards (AMB) that host the AM chips of the FTK. Additionally, since the FTK system relies on information from the silicon layers of the Inner Detector (ID) to calculate essential track parameters, an online framework for high-level data quality monitoring of the tracking algorithm was developed. The PhD thesis comprises four main parts; Part I presents a fundamental theoretical overview, providing a foundational understanding of the underlying physics theories. It explores the SM of particle physics, outlining the symmetries that underpin it. Part II introduces the LHC and provides detailed insights into the ATLAS experiment. An overview of the LHC is offered, followed by a extensive description of the ATLAS detector, including its hardware components and computing infrastructure. Part III delves into the extensive studies on differential cross-section measurements in the ZZjj → 4ljj production process using the ATLAS detector and finally, Part IV focuses on the dimension-8 Effective Field Theory (EFT) interpretation and the various studies that have been conducted in order to extract limits for the Wilson coefficients associated with the OT operator of the Eboli Model.Το σπάσιμο της ηλεκτρασθενούς συμμετρίας (Electroweak symmetry breaking - EWSB) κατέχει κεντρικό ρόλο στο Καθιερωμένο Πρότυπο (Standard Model SM) της Σωματιδιακής Φυσικής επεξηγώντας επιτυχώς την προέλευση των μαζών των στοιχειωδών σωματιδίων μέσω των αλληλεπιδράσεών τους με το πεδίο Higgs.

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
