The originality of Metastasio's Ciro riconosciuto between a Meropian and a Cyrian current.

The emphasis that this thesis would like to give to the Metastasian work, usually and deservedly full of comments on poetics, is rather based on an intertextual comparison, which highlights the originality of the Ciro riconosciuto. The focus on this drama in particular occurs first with the analysis of the myth of Merope from the sixteenth century to Metastasio, starting with the titles of the various works, the methods of recognition and the names of the characters. In fact, from this comparison it is noted that from the precedents to Metastasio two directions emerge, which I have called the 'Meropeus' and 'Cirian' vein, wisely merged or merged into Ciro riconosciuto. I tried to explain how the attention to the characters of the mother and child in such a particular way is also probably linked to the personal story of the Empress Elizabeth, dedicatee of the drama. From an intertextuality external to the author, the contribution of Cyrus to the Metastasian poetic career is then analyzed, determining how he is once again an extremely mature, original and key character, almost a synthetic turning point of a first season. I tried to keep an attention to the texts, often not very protagonists of the Metastasian criticism, with the hope that their richness will not be lost and the interest in the individual works will grow more and more. Finally, especially with regard to the comparison with Giulio Cesare Sorrentino, a window of research seems open to me

Bipolar disorder preceding the onset of multiple sclerosis

    No full text
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common inflammatory demyelinating brain disease. The occurrence of psychiatric disorders, especially for major depression, in the course of MS is high. Reports concerning bipolar disorder (BD) remain rather scarce although early descriptions were found in the old neurological literature. The purpose of this article is to provide a critical review of the epidemiology, comorbidity and treatment findings regarding BD preceding the onset of MS

    Fetoendoscopy, The author replies

The precision lent by Akgu ̈ r and Olguner to our experimental model of gastroschisis using fetoendoscopy is altogether welcome. The distinctions they make are good ones semantically. They are correct when they say that amniotic fluid (AF)exchange is different from amnioinfusion. Both methods are used to lower the intraamniotic meconium concentration. AF exchange can be used in all cases (with or without oligohydramnios), and we think that it will probably prove to be superior to amnioinfusion alone, which is already used in clinical cases with severe oligohydramnios [1, 4, 5]. In our study, we implanted a subcutaneous port so as to minimize repetitive utero puncture and then be able to perform the AF exchange several times, far more often than actually acceptable in clinical practice. However, tolerance was not as good as we had hoped [2], even in ewes. The induction of fetal diuresis by furosemide as proposed by Hakgu ̈ der et al. seems to be a promising alternative therapy [3]

[Ciro Alegria deals with the problems of the Indians in South America and for this reason his novels are classified as Indianist. The author knew in depth the problems of the Indians since he was born in the Peruvian mountains. Alegria only wrote four books: The Golden Serpent, The Hungry Dogs, The World is Wide and Foreign and Duel of Knights. These four books are enough to put him at the top of Latin American writers.

Transumbilical open laparoscopy: a simple method of avoiding complications in pediatric surgery

    No full text
The author reports his experience with a new procedure, transumbilical open laparoscopy (TUOL), to obtain the pneumoperitoneum in children operated upon laparoscopically. TUOL was designed to avoid complications related to closed introduction of the first trocar, and consists in the visually-guided introduction of the first trocar transumbilically without any need for a pursestring suture, with an operative time of about 1 min. The author recommends TUOL as it is easier, less expensive, and less time-consuming compared to other techniques

Clinical risk factors for bipolar disorders: A systematic review of prospective studies

Background Early phases and suspected precursor states of bipolar disorder are not well characterized. We evaluate the prevalence, duration, clinical features and predictive value of non-affective psychopathology as clinical risk factors for bipolar disorder in prospective studies. Methods We screened PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Embase, SCOPUS, and ISI-Web of Science databases from inception up to January 31, 2014, following PRISMA guidelines (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) and searched: bipolar disorder AND [antecedent* OR predict* OR prodrom* OR prospect* OR risk*] AND [diagnosis OR development]. We included only English language reports on prospective, longitudinal studies with two structured clinical assessments (intake and follow-up); no DSM intake diagnosis of bipolar-I or -II; diagnostic outcome was bipolar-I or -II. Details of study design, risk factors, and predictive value were tabulated. Results We found 16 published reports meeting selection criteria, with varying study design. Despite heterogeneity in methods, findings across studies were consistent. Clinical risk factors of bipolar disorder were early-onset panic attacks and disorder, separation anxiety and generalized anxiety disorders, conduct symptoms and disorder, ADHD, impulsivity and criminal behavior. Limitations Since risk factors identified in some prospective studies are predictive of other conditions besides bipolar disorder, these preliminary findings require replication, and their sensitivity, specificity and predictive value need to be assessed. Conclusions Clinical risk factors for bipolar disorder typically arise years prior to syndromal onset, include anxiety and behavioral disorders with unclear sensitivity and specificity. Prospectively identified clinical risk factors for bipolar disorder are consistent with retrospective and family-risk studies. Combining clinical risk factors with precursors and family-risk may improve early identification and timely and appropriate treatment of bipolar disorder. © 2014 Elsevier B.V

Una praelectio omerica di Niccolò Leonico Tomeo (BAV, Ross. 997)

    No full text
The Rossianus 997, a manuscript now preserved in the Vatican Library, transmits part of the correspondence of the Venetian humanist Niccolò Leonico Tomeo (1456-1531). In the last few folios of this slender codex, survives a still unpublished text, an inaugural lecture opening a university-course on the Iliad, dated 1486. The name of the author is unknown but thanks to several internal clues we are now able to attribute this text to the same Niccolò Leonico Tomeo, thus adding a new piece of evidence concerning his early years in Padua and the succession of the first teachers of Greek in that city. The new attribution lead to the discovery of a manuscript of the Iliad annotated by Tomeo, possibly connected to his lectures on the text. Following a detailed study of the structure of the text and a full account of the sources exploited by the author, we offer an editio princeps of the lecture accompanied by a commentary

One trocar appendectomy in pediatric surgery

    No full text
Laparoscopic appendectomy is a safe alternative to open appendectomy to treat appendicitis. The author reports his experience in performing laparoscopic appendectomy with the use of only one trocar in pediatric patients. Between 1 January 1994 and 30 October 1995 at the Department of General and Pediatric Surgery, Division of Pediatric Surgery of the ‘‘Federico II’’ University of Naples, we performed 51 laparoscopic appendectomies. Patient age varied from 4 to 16 years with a mean age of 7 years. In the last 25 patients of our series we performed the one-trocar appendectomy, positioning only one trocar infraumbilically with the use of a 10-mm operative telescope. The appendix is identified, dissected when necessary, grasped laparoscopically with a 450-mm operative atraumatic instrument introduced through the operative channel of the laparoscope, and then exteriorized through the umbilical cannula. The appendectomy was performed using traditional method outside the abdominal cavity. We had no intra- or perioperative mortality or morbidity. The mean overall hospitalization time was 2 days (1–4 days). At a maximal follow-up of 20 months the children have no clinical problems nor any visible scar related to the laparoscopic appendectomy. In conclusion, the author considers the one-trocar appendectomy an appropriate alternative procedure to other techniques of laparoscopic appendectomy

Giorgio Valla as a Translator of Aristotle. Philological Remarks on his Latin Translations of Poetics, Magna Moralia, and De Caelo

In 1498, Giorgio Valla published a collection of translations from Greek into Latin. The selection of texts included in this edition is unprecedented, and it reflects Valla’s interests in ancient medicine, science, and philosophy. These new translations were not successful and were almost completely set aside as soon as other translations became available. In this paper, I will offer a first assessment of the three Aristotelian translations published by Valla and included in the 1498 incunable. Out of the three texts translated by Valla, only the Magna Moralia were not already available in a renaissance translation. This explains why only this translation enjoyed a rather wide success, being reprinted several times in the 16th century, while the other two suffered the competition of rival renderings. Valla is the author of the first printed translation of the Poetics. This translation was initially well received and was reprinted twice; it was later abandoned in favour of Alexander Pac..

SIMPLIFIED MODELS FOR ESTIMATING STRESSES AND STRAINS IN PAVEMENTS ON CONCRETE AND STEEL BRIDGES

    No full text
Simplified models for estimating stresses and strains in pavements both on concrete and steel bridges are presented in this paper. These models represent a very useful tool for a faster prediction of structural behavior of pavements at a preliminary design level. The simplified model proposed for asphalt pavements on concrete bridges can be identified in the elastic multilayer system, which is represented by the layers of the pavement and waterproofing supported by a rigid half-space (concrete deck). The results obtained show that the validity field of this model is influenced by the thickness and dynamic modulus of the pavement, as well as the stiffness of the waterproofing. The model developed for the asphalt pavements on steel bridges, instead, can be identified in a small-scale model, compared to the full-scale bridge, which is represented with a supported continuous plate composed by the pavement, waterproofing, and steel deck. In keeping with the international literature, similar models for steel bridges have been validated in laboratory by reduced-scale tests, as a result the author is confident that the model proposed also permits to estimate accurately enough the stresses and strains
