Title: Influence of Spherical and Cylindrical Capsules on Pressure Transients in Hydraulic Pipelines, Author: Rajbir S. Samra, Location: ThodeThe influence of capsules on pressure transients in hydraulic pipelines has been reported in this dissertation. This experimental investigation was carried out for flow velocities of 1 to 4 ft/sec. for both cylindrical and spherical capsules. Shock waves were generated by a fast closing valve in a 1 in. diameter pipe and pressure transients were measured for a train of cylindrical capsules of diameter 0.875 in. and 0.95 in. The spherical capsules were of diameter 0.75 in. and 0.875 in. A theoretical analysis for this type of waterhammer problem using a perturbation technique has been obtained. The theoretical solution was found to be in agreement with the experimental observations for cylindrical capsules.ThesisMaster of Engineering (ME

TITLE: The representation of a woman in Jasmina Musabegović's novel Skretnice AUTHOR: Bc. Samra Kovač DEPARTMENT: Institute of Ethnology and Central European and Balkan Studies SUPERVISOR: doc. PhDr. Alenka Jensterle Doležal, CSc ABSTRACT: The topic of the thesis is the analysis of the 1986 novel Skretnice by Bosnian author Jasmina Musabegović (1941), especially with regard to the position of women and their image in the novel. From a gender perspective, we will be interested in her psychological profile in relation to the other characters, especially in the question of her intimacy and relationship with the other gender. The aim of the thesis will be to explore the position of the woman or her emancipation. Another aim will be to present the inner world of the woman and her experience of the patriarchal world. The thesis will include a literary analysis as well as a study of the historical, cultural and social aspects of the Bosnian reality. I will focus on the period of the modern realist novel, in which modernity is represented by the suggestiveness of the new Bosnian prose and its structure, and I will present the analysis in the context of Bosnian and South Slavic prose at the end of the 20th century. NÁZEV: Obraz ženy v románu Jasminy Musabegović Skretnice AUTOR: Bc. Samra Kovač KATEDRA: Ústav etnologie a středoevropských a balkánských studií VEDOUCÍ PRÁCE: doc. PhDr. Z hlediska genderové perspektivy nás bude zajímat její psychologický profil vzhledem k jiným postavám, a především otázka její intimity a vztahu k jiném pohlaví. Cílem práce bude prozkoumat pozici ženy, respektive její emancipaci. Dalším cílem bude představit vnitřní svět ženy a její zkušenost s patriarchálním světem. Resilience and Agency in Samra Habib's We Have Always Been Here: A Queer Muslim Memoir

    No full text
The interconnection between vulnerability, resilience, and agency will be used as a critical framework for the study of Samra Habib’s We Have Always Been Here: A Queer Muslim Memoir. More specifically, this chapter will examine the mechanisms developed by the author to subvert the social norms and oppressive traditional structures that force many women in Pakistan to behave according to prescribed social and cultural norms. In doing so, this chapter attempts to highlight the agency of many women who break silence and contest their roles in society in order to overcome their position as vulnerable victims, regain their agency and finally reconstruct their own identities. Finally, this chapter questions and denounces the normative framework that denies the existence of some gender identities categorized as non-normative

Mapping the relationship and influence of school internal factors with an eye towards students' science academic outcomes

    No full text
The present research sought to explore the relationship between school internal factors and their influence on students' academic outcomes in science subjects at the secondary school level in Punjab, Pakistan. A quantitative survey method was employed, utilizing a self-administered questionnaire to collect data on school internal factors, including laboratories, curriculum, and teacher quality, and students' science academic outcomes. The study sampled 210 secondary schools across Punjab, encompassing 630 science teachers specializing in biology, physics, and chemistry. Three hypotheses were formulated and tested. The constructs' underlying structure was examined through both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, using the PLS-PM Path Modeling approach to support these analyses. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) revealed that the measurement model demonstrated internal consistency. The path analysis results indicated that laboratories, curriculum, and teacher quality significantly and positively influence students' academic outcome in science subjects. The study concludes that enhancing the resourcefulness of science educators is crucial, particularly through the provision of support materials for science teaching and learning. This support enables students to engage in experimental learning, develop critical thinking skills, and explore innovative approaches to problem-solving. Furthermore, the findings emphasize the importance of regularly reviewing and updating the secondary school curriculum to ensure its quality. The recruitment of certified teachers with advanced degrees in relevant fields and the provision of ongoing professional development for educators are also recommended to improve academic outcomes in science

Suicide ideation in different generations of immigrants

Objective: To identify whether pressures associated with acculturation are related to suicide ideation. Method: We assessed 1135 undergraduates, using suicide measures and the Vancouver Index of Acculturation. Results and Conclusions: Suicide ideation, plans, and attempts did not vary by generation level or with mainstream acculturation for any of the ethnic groups studied (European, Chinese, and Indo-Asian), nor did they vary among ethnic groups. The results indicate that individuals who identified closely with their heritage culture were at an increased risk for suicidal thoughts but not for suicide plans or attempts.Peer reviewedFinal article publishedsuicideethnic identit

An Approach to Progress Learning Outcomes: International Graduate Students’ Engagement in Reflective Practice and Reflective Journal Writing during Pandemic

    No full text
Reflective practice (RP) and reflective journal writing (RJW) are considered the most important ways to enhance students’ learning progress. During the pandemic, offline learning has replaced online learning to keep students safe and healthy. This research solely examined reflective practice during online learning, which is significant as online education is less effective and students carry the full study load. However, this study’s core purpose was to determine international graduate students’ perceptions regarding RP and RJW during online learning in the pandemic period. It also investigated whether student engagement in RP enhances their critical reflection and learning progress. The mixed-method (QUAN-QUAL) approach was utilized in this study. The sample consisted of 123 international graduate students who were enrolled in various disciplines and majors in China and at least attended two consecutive semesters (24 weeks) online. The survey questionnaire was based on 28 items to collect the quantitative data. The questionnaire was categorized into four variables: self-education, learning progress, critical reflection, and engagement. While semi-structured interviews were conducted with 5 participants for qualitative data collection, the quantitative results indicated that all of the statements received good ranks and could be used to study how reflective journals helped students improve their self-education, critical reflection, writing skills, learning progress, and engagement. In addition, the results revealed a statistically significant beneficial association between engagement, self-education, critical reflection, and learning progress. Qualitative findings corroborated the quantitative results that participation in RP and RJW boosted students’ critical thinking skills and facilitated their learning and development. Based on the results, this study concluded that RP or RJW enhance success ratios as well as critical reflection, which is effective not only in learning but also in professional and practical settings
