Advanced design cultures: long-term perspective and continuous innovation

    No full text
This book describes new thinking and practice in Advanced Design (ADD) – design that is not merely highly developed but anticipates the future by envisioning novel products and processes. The focus is especially on the front end of innovation and the search for solutions in complex pioneering processes using design-related tools and practices. The book opens by describing these tools, the approaches that characterize ADD, and its historical dimension. Specific fields in which ADD has flourished are then examined, exploring the dynamics between research and design. The coverage ranges from transportation, lighting, and electrical appliances through to business networks, technology parks, and the development of ground-breaking materials. AdvanceDesign is the name of the research group at the Politecnico di Milano (Italy’s largest technical university) of which the authors are members. It was chosen to reflect both the “advanced”, tangible dimension of design in terms of modern product development, materials, and technologies and an orientation toward radical innovation through user involvement and imagination

Il concetto di “dialogo” tra Humanities e Design assume un valore creativo, costruttivo e sperimentale; un terreno di verifica dei possibili margini di sovrapposizione e integrazione fra cultura umanistica e cultura scientifica

Aesthetics of futures. Shaping shared visions of tomorrow.

    No full text
Designers - as futurists - by participating in the building of the future, create new levels of value with the motivation to fulfil the unmet needs and desires of people. Overstepping the private mission, design, such as other creative fields (cinema, literature, art, photography, etc.), creates utopian or dystopian narrations, exploring the dimension of public exhibition, involvement and empowerment. Starting from these premises after a short introduction on the relationship between design and humanities the paper pays special attention to the fictionary role of design. The paper will present the importance of design in the debate about “Future Literacy” introducing the notion of design fiction though a reading of the evolution of the respective theoretical framework. Finally, the authors will analyse the case-study of the designer and artist Karolina Sobecka introducing a reflection on the aesthetics of design fictions and on the value of design in the practice of sharing futures

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

This paper provides a vision regarding the design of materials as a theme of industrial design, generated from the influence of the Italian referent based on the design philosophy of Carmelo Di Bartolo. Its objective is to demonstrate the contributions of ba- sic design linked to bionics, applied to the construction of a projective methodological ap- proach of the observant industrial design of the materials that make up the artifices. Basic design is the method based on the observation of nature, from which designers extrapo- late bionic principles towards the conception of the artificial world. The relevance is the ability to integrate contributions to the field of energy savings, material and an intrinsic commitment to the environment. Not because of having extensive economic, productive and technological resources, the creative process must be unlimited and excessive. Ap- proaches are presented that are expressed in the integrative project process called Material Driven Design, which incorporates the concept of perceived quality to integrate function- al and emotional aspects of materials. The conclusions are related to the considerations that the three aspects (Basic design, bionics, and Material Driven Design) contribute to the design process.
