    THE DIGITAL O&P WORKSHOP

    No full text
Digitalisation is the megatrend in healthcare, not only since the pandemic. We are two European digital health experts and industry leaders in the field of orthotics and prosthetics (O&P) and in this article we explored what are the underlying trends driving the adoption of digitalisation for customisation of prosthetics & orthotics. We showed that several trends in 3D image capture (input step), 3D modelling (processing step) and 3D printing (output step) currently converge and thus fuel the rapid transformation of the O&P industry. In short outlooks, we rated the probability and timing of adoption rates across the upcoming couple of years. We furthermore reviewed the impact of boundary conditions set by regulators as well as the reimbursement system. Towards the end of this article, we outlined a digital scenario of the near future by following around an orthotist during her work. We finished with a call-to-action targeting regulators, payors, prosthetists/orthotists, and patients to enable such a desirable future. Martin Opitz’ "New Year’s Gift with Song”

    No full text
At the turn of the year 1623/24, Martin Opitz published a song of praise honouring Christ’s birth in German Alexandrine verse: Lobgesang Uber den Frewdenreichen Geburtstag Unseres Herren und Heilandes Jesu Christi [Song of praise about the joyous birthday of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ]. This example of erudition is also very personal: The author speaks about his troubles during the gruesome Thirty Years War. It concludes with a Latin Sapphic ode petitioning for absolution and peace. Scholars have never appreciated the ode’s function: It derives its full meaning from the intended melody, which was well-known to the dedicatee. Amazingly, many poets copied Opitz in writing epic-dramatic poems including song(s) to honour friends or superiors with a New Year’s dedication; they imitated his motifs and even his title by way of “aemulatio”. When Opitz’ tendency towards dramatic representation and visualisation is enhanced, we find the work comes close to another musical epic-dramatic genre, the actus. We encounter this in several academic communities, its finest example being a hardly known musical composition by Johann Rosenmüller to words by Johann Ziegler.Non UBCUnreviewedFacult

    Hypothesizing about Reading Recovery

    No full text
Professor Opitz\u27s article is one of two in this special issue not written by a Reading Recovery trained teacher. The author has examined the literature on Reading Recovery and attempted to puzzle out the reason(s) for its success. Trained Reading Recovery teachers will find both points of agreement and disagreement, and many points on which to establish a discussion. Opitz writes, ...we do not, I believe, know why the program works. Yet as Clay suggests in this issue, answers are learned in the year-long and continuing contact training sessions. Our understanding of why the program works does not come from information or research alone, but from reflec tive practice. Reading Recovery teachers continue to re flect on their learning and practice, and implicit in the whole Reading Recovery process is ongoing research and evaluation. We have chosen the article because it reflects questions raised by those who have searched the literature on Reading Recovery and are contemplat ing involvement in the program. Professor Opitz\u27s hy pothesizing is based on wide reading in the literature about Reading Recovery, and should generate many powerful questions for the dialogue between trained Reading Recovery personnel and educators considering program implementation

5 kHz Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation: Lack of Cortical Excitability Changes When Grouped in a Theta Burst Pattern

    No full text
Background: Suprathreshold transcranial single pulse electrical stimulation (tES) is painful and not applicable in a repetitive mode to induce plastic after-effects. Objective: In order to circumvent this pain problem, we applied here a 5 kHz transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) theta burst protocol with a field intensity of up to 10 mA to the primary motor cortex (M1). Furthermore, we were interested in finding out whether electrical theta burst stimulation (eTBS) is able to induce lasting after-effects on cortical plasticity. Methods: Three different eTBS protocols were applied at 5 mA in a sham controlled, double blinded cross-over design on the M1 region of seventeen healthy subjects during the first part of the study. The second study part consists of three different eTBS protocols ranging from 5 mA to 10 mA and 1 ms to 5 ms sinusoidal bursts, applied to the M1 region of 14 healthy subjects. Results: We were able to apply all eTBS protocols in a safe manner, with only six subjects reporting mild side effects related to the stimulation. However, no eTBS protocol induced lasting effects on muscle- evoked potential (MEP) amplitudes when compared to sham stimulation. Significant inhibition of MEP amplitude was only seen in the lower intensity protocols as compared to baseline. Conclusion: eTBS is a safe method to apply high frequency tACS with up to 10 mA intensity. Future studies need to explore the parameter space to a larger extent in order to assure efficacy

Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive hereditary disease. It is caused by a mutation in the 7-dehydrocholesterol reductase (DHCR7) gene producing hypocholesterolemia, and consequence mental retardation, delayed growth, microcephaly, micrognathia and other systemic neurological and physical features. A case of a three-year-ninemonth- old patient affected by this syndrome who attended the Pediatric Dental Clinic of the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Dental School at Tijuana is presented. After doing medical and dental records and because of his young age, multiple dental cavities, uncontrollable behavior, mental retardation and medical status, oral rehabilitation under general anesthesia was performed. The anesthesia procedure is detailed.

    Recollection reduces unitised familiarity effect

    No full text
Two types of encoding tasks have been employed in previous research to investigate the beneficial effect of unitisation on familiarity-based associative recognition (unitised familiarity effect), namely the compound task and the interactive imagery task. Here we show how these two tasks could differentially engage subsequent recollection-based associative recognition and consequently lead to the turn-on or turn-off of the unitised familiarity effect. In the compound task, participants studied unrelated word pairs as newly learned compounds. In the interactive imagery task, participants studied the same word pairs as interactive images. An associative recognition task was used in combination with the Remember/Know procedure to measure recollection-based and familiarity-based associative recognition. The results showed that the unitised familiarity effect was present in the compound task but was absent in the interactive imagery task. A comparison of the compound and the interactive imagery task revealed a dramatic increase in recollection-based associative recognition for the interactive imagery task. These results suggest that unitisation could benefit familiarity-based associative recognition; however, this effect will be eliminated when the memory trace formed is easily accessed by strong recollection without the need for a familiarity [email protected]

Peepholes to the world: reflections on tourism and travel books in the German Democratic Republic (1949-1989/90)

The purpose of the present study was to reflect on and analyse the complex interrelationship between tourism, that in the hemisphere of the industrialized countries underwent a transformation into a mass phenomenon in the second half of the 20th century, and its multiple forms and modes of mediatisation by a political regime and a socio-cultural system in which the multifaceted topic of travel played during the forty years of its existence a rather unusual key role at various levels. In contrast to other contemporary societies situated to the west of the «Iron Curtain» whose liberal conceptions understood tourism and intercultural contact as belonging to the apolitical sphere, in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) these issues were always kept under state control; thus, they were of considerable importance to the maintenance of the political and societal system. Ironically, the control of the state in these matters proved to be one of the key factors that led to the GDR´s implosion. Despite the bipolar constellation of the «Cold War» era and the existence of the Berlin Wall, the GDR would not remain completely alien to the globalization process largely due to the increasing telematic mobility that easily crossed geopolitical boundaries and the «plan» to encourage tourism among the «socialist community». This peculiarity of the travel phenomenon in this country served as a starting point for the present study that aims to analyse the concrete implications of the «travel policy» on the tourism practices and customs of the population of the now extinct GDR on the one hand, the respective consequences on the level of the discursive strategies and of the formal mechanisms that support the «narrative» representations of travel in the bi-medial book format (text and image/photonarrative book), here understood as cultural artefact and not merely as a literary product, on the other. The introduction presents a theoretical and methodological approach to both the multi-dimensional character of the study object and the intentional diversity and transversality of the corpus under analysis. Due to the fact that the corpus is not limited to travel literature written by professional writers, the concept underlying the present thesis is inherently transdisciplinary. The next chapter is dedicated to «Metatexts» and consists of an inventarisation and a critical discussion of both the main tendencies that during the last decades have shaped the research field concerned with travel and travel literature and the (few) studies that up to the present date have dealt specifically with the literary genre dedicated to travel accounts in the GDR. The third chapter, significantly entitled «Contexts», provides a «poly-contextual» view of the most diverse extra-literary factors that undoubtedly interfered in the processes of textual and/or imagetic staging of travel, such as political legislation concerning travel; the various phases of the evolution of tourism, the place of the book in the mediatic landscape and the implications of the privilege of travel «to the other side of the Wall». The forth chapter is about «Texts and Images in Movement» and focuses on the formal and functional analysis of the travel books themselves. These books were grouped into two categories: those dedicated to discourse construction and to the mediatisation of the «Socialist Internationalism» and those about travel to the «non-socialist world».This study ends with some brief reflections on the travel theme in the post-socialist era
