Mansi Substrate Toponymy on the Territory of the Former Habitation of the Mansi People
No full textThe article summarizes the results of the study of the Mansi substrate toponymy on the territory of the former habitation of the Mansi people based on the materials collected fallowing Artturi Kannisto’s famous works of the first half of the 20th century. The author revises the Mansi toponymy distribution area on the territory of the Urals argued by Kannisto. The article especially focuses on the western border of the area. The mapping of the data revealed in the contemporary Russian toponymy as well as found in historical written sources substantiates the fact that the Mansi people moved to the Middle Urals western slopes from the East relatively late and in insignificate numbers, but did not advance any farther west of the middle course of the Kama river’s left tributaries. The analysis of the Middle Urals Mansi substrate toponymy also helps characterize some phonetic particularities of the local Old Mansi dialects.В статье обобщаются результаты исследований субстратной мансийской топонимии на территории былого проживания манси на основе материалов, накопленных после известных работ А. Каннисто первой половины XX в. По сравнению с А. Каннисто критически пересматривается ареал распространения субстратной мансийской топонимии на территории Среднего Урала и Предуралья. Наибольшее внимание уделяется западным границам этого ареала. На основе картографирования фактов, выявленных как при исследовании современной русской топонимии, так и найденных в исторических письменных источниках, обосновывается вывод о том, что заселение древними манси западных склонов Среднего Урала происходило с востока, оно было достаточно поздним и незначительным, при этом манси в Среднем Предуралье не продвигались западнее среднего течения левых притоков Камы. На основе анализа выявленных фактов субстратной мансийской топонимии на территории Среднего Урала характеризуются отдельные фонетические особенности местных древнемансийских диалектов
On the question of typology of Mansi home sanctuaries
No full textThe article is dedicated to systematization and generalization of ethnographic data about Mansi home sanctuaries. The author considers ethnographic descriptions published in the XVIII — XX centuries and uses her own field data. The author held expeditions to the territory of inhabitance of Northern Mansi in the settlements situated on the banks of the rivers Severnaya Sos’va and Lyapin in 2006–2010 years. Two types of home sanctuaries in traditional Mansi dwelling were marked out during the research. The first type is a holy ceiling, located directly in the living space. The second type is an attic, separated from the living space of the house by a ceiling. The research shows their interrelation and development as well as present functional features. The article also deals with the question of origin of Samsay-oyka, a house guardian spirit of Northern Mansi. The attic is considers as one of the places where it lives. A hypothesis of late formation of the image of Samsay-oyka is formulated

A Mansi FST and spellchecker
Get PDFThe article presents a finite state transducer and spellchecker for Mansi, an Ob-Ugric Uralic language spoken in northwestern Siberia. Mansi has a rich but mostly agglutinative morphology, with a morphophonology dominated by sandhi phenomena. With a small set of morphophonological rules (32 twolc rules) and a lexicon consisting of 12,000 Mansi entries and a larger set of propernouns we were able to build a transducer covering 98.9 % of a large (700k) newspaper corpus. Being a part of the GiellaLT infrastructure, the transducer was turned into a spellchecker. The most common spelling error in Mansi is the omission of length marks on vowels, and for the 1000 most common words containing long vowels, the spellchecker was able to give a correct suggestion as top-five in 98.3 % of the cases, and as first suggestion in 91.3 % of the cases

Dictionary of Chusovaya Mansi from G. F. Müller’s Archives: Its Features and Significance for Mansi Dialect Classification
Get PDFIntroduction. The article examines a dictionary of Mansi compiled from lexemes recorded along the Chusovaya River in the early-to-mid eighteenth century. The dictionary was discovered in G. F. Müller’s archives. Other available archives (e.g., those of A. J. Sjögren and P. S. Pallas) contain no mention of the dictionary. So, the only source referring to the latter is a 1958 article by Hungarian linguist J. Gulya that analyzes several Mansi words recorded in the eighteenth century across the Lower Tagil, Lower Tura, and Chusovaya river basins to determine a total of three distinct features inherent to the local Mansi dialects. A comparison of lexemes contained in G. F. Müller’s dictionary of Chusovaya Mansi against the ones published in J. Gulya’s work has yielded a number of discrepancies with the scholar’s conclusions. Goals. So, the paper compares Chusovaya Mansi against other Mansi dialects — Berezovo, Solikamsk, Cherdyn, Kungur, Upper Tura, and Karpinsky ones — recorded during the same period and in the same area. The most extensive description and analysis of the latter sources based on L. Honti’s classification are to be found in J. Normanskaya’s article titled ‘How the Classification of Mansi Dialects Was Changed (On the Material of the First Cyrillic Books and Dictionaries of the 18th and 19th Centuries)’ (2022). Materials and methods. The work employs the comparative and comparative historical methods to examine a variety of Mansi-language archival sources. Results. The paper reconsiders the data contained in J. Normanskaya’s publication for a comparative analysis, and shows that the Chusovaya Mansi dictionary does confirm the Russian researcher’s conclusions: Northern and Western Mansi dialect differences developed by L. Honti were non-existent or had only just appeared in the eighteenth century. However, the proto-Mansi *k>χ transition before back vowels identified by J. Normanskaya as the one and only feature exclusively characteristic of Northern Mansi dialects has not been confirmed in the Chusovaya dialect traditionally clustered within Western Mansi: it happens to contain the traditional Northern transition (chot ‘шесть’, chórom ‘три’)
