Change the People or Change the Rules? Preferences for Punishment Following Unfairness

    No full text
Psychological research often frames causal attributions as mutually exclusive. In four studies using modified Dictator Games, we find that people prefer blended explanations and use these explanations in their sanctioning decisions. In Studies 1 (N = 500) and 2, (N = 470, census-matched in the U.S), we found that people were willing to change the rules for an unfair game (vs. punished individuals), when they were randomly assigned a bad system (vs. bad actor) explanation for identical unfair offers. However, people preferred to explain unfairness as the result of both a bad actor and bad system, and preferred to enact system-level change, even after they had already punished the Allocator (Study 3, N = 404), or when the outcome was uncertain (Study 4, N = 401). This research challenges the assumption that sanctioning decisions reflect single attributional preferences and that addressing one source of unfairness satiates punishment motives

The origins of the Austronesian voice system and subject-only restriction

The Austronesian voice system (AVS) is among the most typologically intriguing and well-studied phenomena in syntax. Previous diachronic accounts have used the comparative method to argue that either the voice function or the nominalization function of the voice affixes should be reconstructed to Proto-Austronesian (PAn). In this paper, we use internal reconstruction to lay out a tentative alternative. First, we assume that both the voice and nominalization functions go back to PAn. Second, we suggest that the non-active voice affixes originated in Pre-PAn as prepositions, and were later incorporated into the verb complex as postverbs. The nominalizing function, on the other hand, arose through an inter-stage with compounds. This proposal accounts for several properties of AVS, including the prominence of arguments promoted to subject position and the subject-only restriction, and is supported by a typological parallel in Dinka

Higher education predicts global cultural similarity to WEIRD countries

Behavioral scientists increasingly recruit participants from less-WEIRD societies, but continue to oversample highly educated people, such as university students and online workers. Here we test how representative highly educated individuals are of the world’s cultural diversity. We used the cultural fixation index (CFST) to measure cultural distance between people with high and low education in 95 countries (N=268,992), across beliefs, values, and behaviors assessed by the World Values Survey (2005–2022). We find that more highly educated people are significantly more culturally similar to WEIRD countries, such as the Anglosphere and Western Europe. Contrary to a general account of cultural transmission, education did not predict cultural similarities to other large, culturally and politically influential countries, such as China, Russia, and India. Contrary to modernization theories, income and self-reported subjective status did not show the same pattern of WEIRD cultural similarity. Our results suggest that cross-cultural samples of students or university-educated individuals over-represent cultural values that are typical of WEIRD countries

Finding out the Housing Stupa of the Engraved Copper Plates of Fourth Buddhist Council

    No full text
Since the 19th century, scholars have tried to locate the housing stupa of the engraved copper plates hidden by Emperor Kanishka, following his and his team's theosophical thoughts. This study delves into the search for the engraved copper plates of the Fourth Buddhist council, hidden at a secret location under a stupa. Divided into two sections, the research aims to locate the Fourth Buddhist council site and identify the housing stupa based on the hypothesis that King Kanishka, being knowledgeable about the Himalayan terrain, would have hidden the plates in a secure place protected from atmospheric and human-induced hazards. Accompanied by Buddhist scholars, Kanishka executed this plan with great secrecy. The research supports the theory that the Kundal-Atholi region in Kishtwar, Kashmir, served as the Fourth Buddhist council site, well-protected by mountains and having fertile land to sustain the council attendees. The Kanika Chorten in Zanskar valley is suggested as not only the housing stupa of the engraved copper plates but also the Buddha's alms bowl, hidden amidst the difficult-to-reach high passes and abundant copper resources. Fountain slabs with water Baolis from Ghora galli to Kundal-Atholi reveal routes to the council, reflecting Kanishka's dedication to Buddhism. Art sculptures of horse riders in the Kesar saga hint at connections between Kesar and King Kanishka's life, aiding in reconstructing Stupa structures using Ghora galli sculptures. The expedition to locate the housing stupa, guided by the Kesar saga, led to Kanika Chorten, and the statues in the cemetery are believed to be made by Kesar of Ling. Verification using metal detectors provided evidence of non-ferrous metal presence under the Kanika chorten's base, supporting the hypothesis. Preservation of Ghora galli, Gool sculptures, water Baolis, and the Fourth Buddhist council location is crucial, as these historical monuments hold immense significance for Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. Unearthing the engraved copper plates will shed light on the Kushan period and Buddhism during Kanishka's reign, honoring the efforts of the people of Zanskar in preserving their historical legacy. Note for Third Revision: A previously discussed stone inscription was misinterpreted due to its damaged script. The inscription and related argument have been removed in this version to ensure accuracy. Earlier versions remain available for transparency
