Testing and Defining a Complex Design Through Digital and Physical Models
This paper presents the methodology adopted in an application of shape optimisation and digital fabrication conducted in the field of wooden furniture design. Experience has allowed the authors to define the models that support the creative process, identifying their respective peculiarities and their contribution to the design process as a process of experimentation, which takes place between digital and physical, not only defining the form of the idea but also correctly representing the tested model and its use, and allowing a dialogue between the stylistic requirements of the designed shape and the technical needs of the built one. The phases of the methodology are applied to the project of furnishing the lounge bar and restaurant area of the Oasis Skyview hotel in Doha (Qatar). The coordinated dialogue between the different models allows the definition of the design project, creating a workflow that significantly reduces the distance between the project and construction
The extensive collection of lithographs left by Vincenzo Fasolo mirror his eclectic personality to perfection: his training, academic research and creative and visionary spirit. The poetics shared by his subjects are personal re-elaborations of urban scenes and more or less well-known architectures. This article will provide a tool to interpret Fasolo’s work from four different viewpoints: drawing, history of architecture, technique and execution, and a purely artistic approach
Testing and Defining a Complex Design Through Digital and Physical Models
This article presents the methodology employed in an application of shape optimisation and digital fabrication in the domain of double-curved wooden furniture design. The study offers a comprehensive definition of the various models, both digital and physical, that facilitate the creative process and their contribution to the design and experimentation process. The process is not solely focused on defining the optimal form; it also represents and simulates the interplay between the stylistic requirements of the designed form and the technical needs of the constructed form.
The integration of these models enables the delineation of the design project, thereby reducing the discrepancy between design and construction through the incorporation of digital simulation and physical verification. The theoretical assumptions and the methodology applied for the discretisation of the form, as well as the proposed algorithmic procedure, are discussed and presented for reproducibility.
The methodology was successfully applied to the furnishing of the lounge bar and restaurant area of the Oasis Skyview hotel in Doha (Qatar), a project which required the engineering of almost 26,000 wooden laths, identified by unique codes for installation on site
The circular helical staircase at Palazzo Spada
The paper deals with the unpublished survey and geometric analysis of the circular helical staircase built around 1660 in Palazzo Spada’s wing on Via del Polverone in Rome. Its role in the development of the place and the history of its design process are addressed thanks to historical drawings and the reference model proposed both in the treatise and construction between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries. A description of the 3D digital survey procedures is followed by the reconstruction of a NURBS 3D model that describes the staircase and its geometric properties. Three helical turns of the staircase undergo an in-depth analysis of the slope angle thanks to the development of the helical lines. The innovative methodological approach leads to the recognition of the main characteristics of this staircase: its unique central structure; the implementation of geometrical proportions descending from Andrea Palladio's treatise; the changes of the slope angle that characterize the staircase flights and the space they generate. The essay is an example of the recomposition of different knowledge in the ecosystem of architectural culture

Accessibility and visual perspectives: the role of the noble staircase in Palazzo Spada in the 17th century.
The survey carried out by the authors, the study of the original historical documents and the state of the art of the previous studies have contributed to elaborate reflections on the role of visual perception for the planning, at that time, of accessibility to the rooms of the palace
The contribution intends to present theoretical reflections on the role of drawing, on its technical and expressive values, in the sphere of architectural design in a period in which, more and more, this sector seems to be driven by technological and applicative development alone.
In particular, the graphic work of architect Francesco Cellini was chosen, a refined draughtsman and representative of contemporary architectural culture with deep historical roots and artistic references. Presented here are drawings that span the entire course of his career and testify to the central role of drawing in his design thinking. In his drawings, it is possible to trace both utopian and imaginative values as well as rational and rigorously geometric ones, always influenced by deep memories, both historical-architectural and referable to the natural contexts in which he operates. The contribution wants to participate in the need for beauty in a period marked by difficult events involving all humanity
