Gösta Gustaf-Janson och nazismen
Gösta Gustaf-Janson (1902−1993) was a prolific and successful Swedish author, whose novels through frequent film versions also reached a larger audience. Although growing up in a very fashionable suburb of Stockholm he did not belong to a rich family, his father being an author too. Gustaf-Janson describes this upper class environment in an ambiguous way, both satirically and apologetically. The theme here is Swedish Nazism as it is depicted in his novels, from the early thirties and some forty years ahead. During this long period the author changes his attitude from contemporary witness to ageing historian telling young generations about a strange and distant past. All the time Gustaf-Janson is a steadfast and consequent adversary of Nazi ideology, but he also seeks to understand the human beings behind the ideological fanaticism. The affluent suburb is described in its own right, but at the same time also serves as a representative symbol of the whole country.</p

The article discusses the considerations behind the content and design of a test website dealing with the Danish author and artist Gustaf Munch-Petersen (1912-1938). The website, which can be visited at address http://www.kb.dk/proto/gmp/, is the result of a research and development project at the Royal Library, Copenhagen, the purpose of which is to examine various ideas for presenting Danish literature over the Internet which exploit that medium’s special characteristics. The medium bears within itself a number of opportunities, both for summarising an author’s production and for assisting the reader’s understanding of individual texts. The website tests certain of these opportunities on the basis of a specific author taking as target group the teachers and students of Danish in Danish upper secondary schools. Inspiration for the content and design of the website derives in part from an initial exploratory interview survey of this target group which aimed at uncovering their needs and desires relating to Danish literature on the Internet. The website is based on two main ideas, each of which in its own way seeks to facilitate the reader’s understanding and interpretation of the literature, namely thematisation and contextualisation. With regard to the former, eight theme lines have been drawn through Gustaf Munch-Petersen’s collected works. These are: “Emancipation and the clash of generations,” “Women and love,” “Bourgeoisie and the working class,” “Revolution,” “To be an artist,” “The primitive,” “Dreams and the unconscious” and “The mystical experience.” These theme lines give a general impression of important topics in the author’s work, and enable readers to concentrate their reading on one or more of them while offering certain hints for interpretation. With regard to the latter idea, the texts have been provided with various types of context: explanatory or perspectivecreating material in words or images. These cover explanations of words, a time line showing critical events in the author’s life, cultural life and contemporary society, Gustaf Munch-Petersen’s paintings and drawings, his letters and manuscripts, relevant quotations from other texts, and finally reviews and other press articles on the author. It is shown how thematisation and contextualisation on the website can contribute to what the reader can draw from Gustaf Munch-Petersen’s texts. This is done both by examining the course of one of the eight theme lines, “Women and love”, and by showing how the contexts can give rise to different interpretations in certain of the poems, taking “til en” and “det underste land” as the main examples. Finally future applications and ideas for future development of the website are discussed
Jag är ett mellanting. Klass och kolonialism i Gustaf Hellströms bildningsroman Kärlek och politik
Peter Forsgren, Department of Film and Literature, Linnaeus University “I’m something in-between”: Class and Colonialism in Gustaf Hellström’s Bildungsroman Love and Politics (“Jag är ett mellanting”. Klass och kolonialism i Gustaf Hellströms bildningsroman Kärlek och politik) This article analyzes Gustaf Hellström’s novel Kärlek och politik (Love and Politics), published in 1942, from both a class and a postcolonial perspective, showing how they interact with each other, and with gender as well. Following the novel’s hero, Stellan Petreus and his development during his stay in London 1908–1911 as a foreign correspondent, the analysis shows how his identity as a Swede and as a liberal middle-class man is disrupted when he is confronted with class conflicts and social injustices in England and with British colonial policies, especially towards Ireland and India. The analysis also shows that Stellan Petreus uses his writings, both as a journalist and as an author of fiction, as a way to cope with the conflicts he is faced with. Another way to deal with the conflicts is to define his position as an “in-betweener” (mellanting)

Medusa’s Gaze and Geijerstam’s Gay Science in the Swedish fin de siècle
Gustaf af Geijerstam’s Medusas hufvud (Medusa’s Head, 1895) is one of the “account-settling novels” of the late nineteenth century. These novels reflect on the aesthetic reorientation after the breakdown of the “Eighties movement” in Sweden. One important dimension of this transformation was the growing emphasis on gendered visions of authorship. I argue that Geijerstam’s novel is an attempt to create a male author role and a male intellectual sphere. The establishment of a male literary sphere requires homosocial desire, an artistic passion that Geijerstam understands as similar and different from sexual desire. This terminology is employed, after Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, to insist on a productive continuum between the repositioning on the literary field that the novel represents and the thinly disguised homosexual tensions between its three male characters. However, the homosexual tensions are also related to secrecy, disgust, and terror (most clearly visible in the important Medusa motif). I finally argue that Geijerstam employs the erotic triangle, where the woman functions as a “mediator” for a relationship between the men, as a plot device that lets him simultaneously explore and dissimulate this homosocial desire

2020 Archipelagic and Island States Innovation Challenges for Joint Research in Blue Economy or Marine Plastic Debris Areas: Mobile technology as an incentive for sustainable fishing practices - Scope of Work 3: Final research report
This collaborative project was conducted from November 2020 – March 2022. While originally envisaged as a 12 month project, considering the challenges on the ground and the covid situation in North Sulawesi, the AIS Forum Secretariat, the Tropical Futures Institute, James Cook University Singapore and Sam Ratulangi University agreed to extend the joint research timeline. Research under the agreed extended timeline was completed in March 2022 and initial testing of this approach to incentivise fishers shows indicates that such an approach shows promise. Under the project, the industry partner, Eachmile Technologies, optimised the mFish application and associated systems to enable a wide range of potential scenarios related to application use, including the introduction of a number of functions and an Indonesian language interface to enable its utilisation in the region. A range of training material was produced in the form of videos, translated into Indonesian to enable rollout and training in application use. On the ground in Indonesia, UNSRAT carried out site visits and surveys to identify suitable fishing communities to engage in the project, and conducted workshops to train local fishing communities to Mark, Release and Recapture fish and to utilise a mobile phone application to collect and report data. In Kema in North Sulawesi, fishers utilising larger boats and handline fishing techniques to fish up to 1000 km away were contracted to determine whether the training materials would enable data collection. This proved successful and the program was then rolled out to artisanal fishers in Parentek in North Sulawesi who fish locally using beach seine nets. A number of fishers were trained at workshops as participants and by the end of the project had successfully tagged and released fish, enabling an exchange of fishcoins through the app as proposed. At the point of report writing, no tagged fish had yet been recaptured and the researchers plan to continue to engage with the fishing community to further identify improvements that can be made to protocols to enable this and other communities to work towards sustainably managing their local fisheries
