A new approach to literary theory and criticism
Literary theory is a systematic study of the nature of literature and of the methods for analyzing literature. Literary theory and literary criticism are interpretative tools that enable us to think insightfully about the literature we read. The book throws light on various literary theories and methods of criticism that are widely used to study literature. It is the result of cumulative endeavor of two erudite teachers with long experience of teaching literary theory. It has been painstakingly written with an eye on the need of postgraduate students of Indian universities who have to deal with the ever-expanding domain of critical, literary and cultural theories. The book explains in a simple language and format, the broad outlines as also the fine nuances of ‘theory’. An extra edge is provided through citations from valuable sources relevant to each area of study
An algorithm for compositional nonblocking verification of extended finite-state machines
This paper describes an approach for compositional nonblocking verification of discrete event systems modelled as extended finite-state machines (EFSM). Previous results about finite-state machines in lock-step synchronisation are generalised and applied to EFSMs communicating via shared variables. This gives rise to an EFSM-based conflict check algorithm that composes EFSMs gradually and partially unfolds variables as needed. At each step, components are simplified using conflict-equivalence preserving abstraction. The algorithm has been implemented in the discrete event systems tool Supremica. The paper presents experimental results for the verification of two scalable manufacturing system models, and shows that the EFSM-based algorithm verifies some large models faster than previously used methods

BIG Data: A Challenge to Data Protection?
Big data’ in India is set to get ‘bigger’ with the recent launch of Reliance Jio. Through Jio, Reliance is targeting mid-to-low end customers and is striving to digitize millions in rural India by providing them data connectivity at low prices. As customers line in queues to join Jio, the rise in digital adoption is expected to result in greater content consumption and more digital transactions. This upsurge in data usage would yield an exponential increase in the quantity of big data generated. Jio intends to maximize growth and competitiveness by exploiting big data
The growth and management of R&D outsourcing: evidence from UK pharmaceuticals
Outsourcing of research and development (R&D) activities has become a major management issue for R&D and technical managers within firms. It has also been of growing concern to academics who are trying to chart the implications of the increasingly distributed nature of research and innovative activities in advanced economies. This study is based on a survey of research-based pharmaceutical companies operating in the United Kingdom conducted in 2004–2006. The aim of this paper is to outline the main reasons for pharmaceutical firms to outsource R&D and the management practices followed by such companies in relation to outsourcing. The research results provide interesting findings in relation to, for example, the reasons behind outsourcing, the decision-making processes behind such practices and barriers to outsourcing arrangements. These issues are evaluated together with the characteristics of the firms and the specific project outsourced<br/
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
"Closing the R&D Gap, Evaluating the Sources of R&D Spending"
Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.
