This diploma thesis titled Welzer\u27s Manuscript for Lutheran Centre at the Betnava near Maribor 1587-1598 considers the transliteration of the Protestant religious centre secretary\u27s material from the end of the 16th century in a place, that was located next to Herberstein mansion in Betnava. The work of nobleman Klemen Welzer pl. Eberstein was very important for a small Protestant community that grew with every year. Interest in religion was increasing and new objects were being built in Betnava, among them a small oratory, a graveyard, a school and a preacher\u27s house. Welzer was the right person for the job and took his duties very serious. Day after day he noted all income (donations from loyal believers and land Styria) and expenditure in his financial tally (it might as well be called a balance sheet). Besides this his work also included orders and management of the whole material needed for the construction of the desired objects. The response from the residents was immense and people donated to centre treasury on a monthly basis –land Styria also ordinarily contributed its share. The generosity of the people was also shown in work and bringing material to the construction site. The small Protestant community also faced problems such as destruction of their property (broken glass, doors, they had to bury their deceased at their own graveyard – hence the construction of a graveyard, etc.). The Protestant religious centre in Betnava existed until 1600 when the Protestants were banished from the site and their buildings and graveyard demolished. Betnava mansion is all that is left – thanks to the ownership of the noblemen, namely nobleman Herberstein

MALEC: a multiple access low energy cache

    No full text
This paper addresses the dynamic energy consumption in L1 data cache interfaces of out-of-order superscalar processors. The proposed Multiple Access Low Energy Cache (MALEC) is based on the observation that consecutive memory references tend to access the same page. It exhibits a performance level similar to state of the art caches, but consumes approximately 48% less energy. This is achieved by deliberately restricting accesses to only 1 page per cycle, allowing the utilization of single-ported TLBs and cache banks, and simplified lookup structures of Store and Merge Buffers. To mitigate performance penalties it shares memory address translation results between multiple memory references, and shares data among loads to the same cache line. In addition, it uses a Page-Based Way Determination scheme that holds way information of recently accessed cache lines in small storage structures called way tables that are closely coupled to TLB lookups and are able to simultaneously service all accesses to a particular page. Moreover, it removes the need for redundant tag-array accesses, usually required to confirm way predictions. For the analyzed workloads, MALEC achieves average energy savings of 48% in the L1 data memory subsystem over a high performance cache interface that supports up to 2 loads and 1 store in parallel. Comparing MALEC and the high performance interface against a low power configuration limited to only 1 load or 1 store per cycle reveals 14% and 15% performance gain requiring 22% less and 48% more energy, respectively. Furthermore, Page-Based Way Determination exhibits coverage of 94%, which is a 16% improvement over the originally proposed line-based way determination.<br/

From the Union of Lublin to the Mutual Guarantee of the Two Nations

The purpose of this study is to show changes in the legal and political nature of the alliance between the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania over the centuries, from the Union concluded in Lublin in 1569, through the so-called ‘coequatio iuris’ of 1697, until the regulations adopted in the Constitution of May 3, and the “Reciprocal Guarantee of Both Nations” crowning the process and passed at the Four-Year Sejm on October 20, 1791. The study uses a wide range of archival manuscript sources, old prints, parliamentary legislation, and also numerous studies using both old and current literature. The main research goal of the study was to show to what extent the changes in the legal nature of the union of the two countries led to their full unification, which was in the past (and sometimes still is) the interpretation of this process in many studies, and to what extent the federalist character of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was preserved, which is nowadays the dominant view and which the author of this study is a strong supporter [email protected] Akademia im. Standardization and application of quantitative PCR methods in patients with hematological malignancies

    No full text
Using modem combination chemotherapy regimens, it has been possible to increase the rate of complete remission (CR) in acute lymphoblastic (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The major reason for treatment failure in acute leukemia (AL) is the resistance of leukemic blasts to chemotherapeutic agents, which is accompanied by an inability of the immune system to eradicate residual leukemic cells surviving initial treatment. Such cells are referred to as minimal residual disease (MRD), and are very difficult to detect against the background of regenerating bone marrow (BM).The clinical definition of CR is traditionally based on conventional cytomorphological techniques, which have detection limits of 1-5%. Therefore more sensitive methods are needed for accurate evaluation of the presence of MRD. This thesis has been aimed at the standardization and assessment of molecular techniques for MRD detection in AL. A further goal has been the development of similar methods to gain quantitative information on the mRNA expression of various cytokines in lymph node biopsies from patients with Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL).Experience from the cooperative projects "BIOMED-1 Concerted Action" (CA) and "Europe Against Cancer" (EAC) contributed to MRD evaluation in a standardized way. The collaborative BIOMED-1 study resulted in the standardization of primer sets, and conditions for RT-PCR, firstly for its use in clinical practice for the molecular classification of AL at diagnosis, and secondly for MRD detection during follow-up, in order to evaluate treatment effectiveness. The collaborative efforts of EAC resulted in the development of primers and probes for real-time quantitative (RQ)-PCR analysis for fusion gene (FG) and control gene (CG) transcripts (ABL, GUS, B2M). We applied RQ-PCR to investigate the differences over time in the stabilities of FG and CG transcripts, which may result in over- or under-estimation of MRD levels. The mean stability of most FG transcripts seemed to be comparable to those of the CG; however large differences were observed between patients expressing the same FG transcripts. To compare MRD levels in follow-up BM samples from children with ALL two main methods were used: FC and semi-quantitative ASO-PCR techniques. Comparison between FC and ASOPCR showed significantly consistent results in 78% of the samples. Development of RQ-PCR permitted accurate quantification of PCR products during the exponential phase of the PCR amplification process, in complete contrast to classical PCR end-point quantification. We applied RQ-PCR and FC methods, to compare MRD levels in follow-up samples from 22 ALL patients. When results obtained by RQ-PCR and FC were grouped into positive-negative categories, a significant level of agreement was found in 72% of samples. However, if a cutoff level of 0.01% was applied, the concordance was 89%.Application of RQ-PCR techniques gains quantitative information on DNA and mRNA levels, and so we applied this approach to investigate cytokine mRNA expression in Hodgkin's Lymphoma (HL) samples and HL cell line. Reactive lymphatic tissue and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from healthy donors were used as controls. The results demonstrated that expression levels of IL-13, IL-10, IL-1beta, IFNgamma, IL-15, and IL-12p35 in HL tissue were higher than those in PBMCs and reactive tissue. The highest mRNA levels for several of the cytokines were found in Epstein-Barr virus-positive samples. In conclusion, this study provides the basis for rational and efficient molecular quantitative determination of MRD levels. These approaches are conducted whilst the patient is within the first months of treatment, and give information, which allows patient classification into low or high-risk groups. These groups may benefit from the possibility for group-specific treatment modalities, which minimize side effects and optimize treatment outcome. Moreover, the application of these methods can give valuable information on inherent biological variation between different lymphoma samples, and may help to unravel the complex cytokine network contributing to the clinical and biological heterogeneity of these diseases.List of scientific papersI. van Dongen JJ, Macintyre EA, Gabert JA, Delabesse E, Rossi V, Saglio G, Gottardi E, Rambaldi A, Dotti G, Griesinger F, Parreira A, Gameiro P, Diaz MG, Malec M, Langerak AW, San Miguel JF, Biondi A (1999). Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Simulation of thermal plant optimization and hydraulic aspects of thermal distribution loops for large campuses

    No full text
Following an introduction, the author describes Texas A&M University and its utilities system. After that, the author presents how to construct simulation models for chilled water and heating hot water distribution systems. The simulation model was used in a $2.3 million Ross Street chilled water pipe replacement project at Texas A&M University. A second project conducted at the University of Texas at San Antonio was used as an example to demonstrate how to identify and design an optimal distribution system by using a simulation model. The author found that the minor losses of these closed loop thermal distribution systems are significantly higher than potable water distribution systems. In the second part of the report, the author presents the latest development of software called the Plant Optimization Program, which can simulate cogeneration plant operation, estimate its operation cost and provide optimized operation suggestions. The author also developed detailed simulation models for a gas turbine and heat recovery steam generator and identified significant potential savings. Finally, the author also used a steam turbine as an example to present a multi-regression method on constructing simulation models by using basic statistics and optimization algorithms. This report presents a survey of the author??s working experience at the Energy Systems Laboratory (ESL) at Texas A&M University during the period of January 2002 through March 2004. The purpose of the above work was to allow the author to become familiar with the practice of engineering. The result is that the author knows how to complete a project from start to finish and understands how both technical and nontechnical aspects of a project need to be considered in order to ensure a quality deliverable and bring a project to successful completion. This report concludes that the objectives of the internship were successfully accomplished and that the requirements for the degree of Degree of Engineering have been satisfied
