    The Mountains of Majeed

    No full text
The Mountains of Majeed is a reflection on the end of the war in Afghanistan through photography, found imagery and Taliban poetry. It looks at the experience of the vast majority of military personnel and civilian contractors who have serviced ‘Operation Enduring Freedom’ without ever engaging the enemy. Their vision of Afghanistan is what they see over the perimeters, or represented inside the walls, of enclaves like Bagram Airbase, the biggest base of ‘Operation Enduring Freedom’ and home from home for 40,000 personnel. Wars of resistance are characterised by technologically-advanced powers in fortified enclaves fighting far less sophisticated but fluid insurgents hidden in the landscape, sapping the occupiers’ resources and will. Inside a dining facility at Bagram I found a series of simple paintings of mountains and monuments showing a different Afghanistan, by an Afghan artist called Majeed. These transcend the confines of the base taking the viewer to idealised passes and lakes in the Hindu Kush and other ranges. There is distance between our mountains. Vistas of tranquillity fabricated by hand from canvas, wood and paint, and images captured in high resolution by the latest digital technology. And there is convergence. Both are mountains forever beyond boots confined within walls of occupation. Both are representations of enduring freedom; and in both the mountains belong to Majeed. The book also contains poetry taken from insurgent websites in Afghanistan

BACKGROUND: To identify patient and general practice (GP) characteristics associated with emergency (unplanned) first admissions for cancer in secondary care. METHODS: Patients who had a first-time admission with a primary diagnosis of cancer during 2007/08 to 2009/10 were identified from administrative hospital data. We modelled the associations between the odds of these admissions being unplanned and various patient and GP practice characteristics using national data sets, including the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF). RESULTS: There were 639,064 patients with a first-time admission for cancer, with 139,351 unplanned, from 7957 GP practices. The unplanned proportion ranged from 13.9% (patients aged 15-44 years) to 44.9% (patients aged 85 years and older, P<0.0001), with large variation by ethnicity (highest in Asians), deprivation, rurality and cancer type. In unadjusted analyses, all included patient and practice-level variables were statistically significant predictors of the admissions being unplanned. After adjustment, patient area-level deprivation was a key factor (most deprived compared with least deprived quintile OR 1.36, 95% CI 1.32-1.40). Higher total QOF performance protected against unplanned admission (OR 0.94 per 100 points; 95% CI 0.91-0.97); having no GPs with a UK primary medical qualification (OR 1.08, 95% CI 1.04-1.11) and being less able to offer appointments within 48 h were associated with higher odds. CONCLUSION: We have identified some patient and practice characteristics associated with a first-time admission for cancer being unplanned. The former could be used to help identify patients at high risk, while the latter raise questions about the role of practice organisation and staff training

Majeed Amjad (1914-1974) from Jhang was a leading Urdu poet. He gave Urdu poetry a style of modern themes and played an important role in bringing it closer to world literature with his simple but profound imagination. Among the first generation of poets who made their impact on Urdu poetry after the establishment of Pakistan, Majeed Amjad's name comes first. Especially in the tradition of Urdu poetry, he added some colors that belong only to him. Majeed Amjad's ghazals also have their own special mood, but he was basically a poet of poetry. He started his literary life as the editor of Jhang's newspaper "Urooj" and had to wash his hands of the editorship for raising his voice against British imperialism. Later, he was appointed as an officer of the Food Department and worked there until his death. His first collection of poems "Shab-e-Rafta" was published in 1958. His second collection of poetry, "Shab Rafta Ke Baad", was published after his death in 1976, and his complete poetry was published in "Kaliyat-e-Majeed Amjad" in 1989.He made the common themes of daily life the focus of his poetry, but with a modern style of expression. By writing on titles like "Hari Bhari Faslo", "Bus Stand Par", "Harappe Ka Ek Katba", "Accident" and "Kahani Ek Malik Ki", he brought Urdu poetry in line with modern trends.
