In this paper we give a brief overview of the theory of Majorana representations of finite groups

Classifying 2-generated symmetric axial algebras of Monster type

    No full text
In [15], Yabe gives an almost complete classification of primitive symmetric 2-generated axial algebras of Monster type, leaving open the case of algebras in characteristic 5 and axial dimension larger than 5. In this note, we complete the classification of these algebras, by constructing a new infinite-dimensional primitive 2-generated symmetric axial algebra Hˆ of Monster type [Formula presented] over a field of characteristic 5, and showing all the cases not falling into Yabe's classification are factors of Hˆ

    The tildePtilde P!-theorem

In this paper we prove a result that is used in the investigation of finite K_p-groups of local characteristic p. It is part of an attempt to revise a major part of the classification of the finite simple groups. A description of this program can be found in [U.Meierfrankenfeld, B.Stellmacher, G.Stroth, "Finite groups of local characteristic p: an overview", Groups, Combinatorics and Geometry, Durham, 2001 (World Scientific Publishing, River Edge, NJ, 2003) pp. 155-192]

Energetic Valorisation of Cheese Whey using UASB Technology: a case-study

    No full text
This study was focused on energetic valorization of cheese whey using UASB anaerobic digestion; whey represents a strongly polluted stream, that needs to be properly treated. In particular, the mountain area of Friuli-Venezia Giulia region was selected as a case-study, due to the presence of a number of cheese factories and a UASB reactor, actually inactive, located in municipal WWTP of Tolmezzo (Ud). The results showed that first and second cheese whey were characterized by extreme COD value, up to 105 g/L, significant solid matter presence (6.63-7.44% TS) and high phosphates concentrations (527-530 mg/L); a major difference between the matrixes was lipids concentration, that was significantly higher in first whey (33.0 g/L versus 2.4 g/L). Elemental analysis highlighted high C (35.8-43.1%) and low N (1.0-2.4%) concentrations of whey solid matter. A useful dilution of whey (1.50 v/v) was used in continuous tests, that were executed both on laboratory and pilot-scale: the results showed excellent COD removal, as high as 84.7%, and a methane production of 0.193 Nm3 CH4/Kg CODremoved, that boosts for anaerobic valorization of this substrate

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Transitive permutation groups with cyclic point stabilizers of maximum order

    No full text
The purpose of this paper is to classify transitive permutation groups where the stabiliser is cyclic of order n1n-1 where the degree is n1n-1. This is a continuation of a paper by {\it A. Lucchini} [Atti Accad. Naz. Lincei, Cl. Sci. Fis. Mat. Nat., IX. Ser., Rend. Lincei, Mat. Appl. 9, No. 4, 241-243 (1998; Zbl 0940.20006)]. However the main result is more general, Theorem: Let GG be a finite group and let π\pi be a set of primes dividing the order of GG. Assume that GG has an Abelian Hall π\pi-subgroup, QQ. Then one of the following hold: (a) Oπ(G)1O_\pi(G)\neq 1, (b) G>2Q2|G|>2|Q|^2, or (c) G=E1××ErG=E_1\times\cdots\times E_r where each EiE_i is a 22-transitive Frobenius group whose complement is a π\pi-group.\par The question arose from a paper by {\it L. Babai}, {\it A. J. Goodman} and {\it L. Pyber} [J. Algebra 195, No. 1, 1-29 (1997; Zbl 0886.20020)]. [Alan R. Camina (Norwich)
