No full textAre « gift » and « passion » sufficient for teaching mathematics ? Mathematics would be a subject independent of the individual who thinks it. Denise Mahieu, a mathematics teacher herself, proves this idea to be wrong. Throughout their history, mathematics have always been related to the persons who have elaborated them. The relations that people have with this subject depend on cultural and social values. The teachers stand between two extrem pedagogical modes : the rigorist and the creative, poetic one. So it may be easily understood that the pupils, teacher, mathematics triangulation is a difficult one.
The author suggests therefore a teacher training which would aim at making people realize all these phenomena.Pour enseigner les mathématiques, suffit-il d'avoir le « don » et la « passion » ? Les mathématiques seraient une matière indépendante du sujet qui la pense. Denise Mahieu, elle-même, professeur de mathématiques, nous démontre qu'il n'en est rien. Dans leur histoire, les mathématiques ont toujours été liées aux individus qui les ont produites. Les relations que les personnes entretiennent avec cette matière sont fonction des valeurs culturelles et sociales. Les enseignants ont tendance à se situer selon deux modes pédagogiques extrêmes : le mode rigoriste et le mode créateur, poète. On comprend alors que la triangulation élèves, professeur, mathématiques soit difficile. Restoration of two garden follies in Kortrijk.]Deze twee tot de verbeelding sprekende tuinconstructies zijn de schaarse overblijfselen van een groot domein met landhuis van plaatselijke textielbaronnen uit het 19de-eeuwse Kortrijk. Het landhuis in neoclassicistische stijl met empirekenmerken werd spijtig genoeg afgebroken, maar de tuin in landschappelijke stijl is ondertussen beschermd om zijn cultuurhistorische waarde. Frederik Mahieu begeleidde de restauratie van de gloriette, een houten tuinpaviljoen op rotswerksokkel, en de mirador, een roodbakstenen uitkijktoren met houten en zinken bekroning.Eddy Dupae - Levende relicten uit een ver verleden. Als jongste nieuwe gebruiker laat de Universiteit Leuven ongetwijfeld op termijn evenzeer haar eigen sporen na.Summar

A convergent validity test within the payment card format using simulation techniques
No full textA convergent validity test is performed between two groups of versions of the payment card format. The first group, the classic payment card (CPC), asks respondents to report their willingness to pay (WTP) as a point from a list of amounts, and then treats each WTP response as an interval. The second group generates WTP data that may contain both single point and interval values. It includes the two-way-payment ladder (TWPL) (respondents have to tick amounts they would definitely pay and cross amounts they would definitely not pay), and point-interval payment card (PIPC) (respondents have to tick their WTP as either a point or an interval). The test is conducted using data from one TWPL study and two PIPC studies. For each study, we use WTP values stated to simulate 200 CPC WTP datasets, which allows controlling for any behavioral biases likely to confound the outcome of the test. The results challenge the conventional way of eliciting WTP under the CPC and the typical way of treating WTP data from this PC version. Although convergent validity holds between the TWPL/PIPC and CPC, parameter and mean WTP estimates from the TWPL and PIPC are more stable as PC intervals widths increase

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
No full textThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Dealing with Internal Inconsistency in Double-Bounded Dichotomous Choice: An Application to Community-Based Health Insurance
No full textContingent valuation method is commonly used in the field of health economics in an attempt to help policy maker in taking decisions. The use of the double-bounded dichotomous choice format results in a substantial gain in statistical efficiency over the single bounded dichotomous choice format. Yet, this efficiency gain comes at the cost of biasness known as internal inconsistency. This paper aims at reducing this internal inconsistency in double-bounded dichotomous choice by using the certainty calibration technique in a community-based health insurance study. Findings confirm the internal inconsistency between the initial and the follow-up responses and the statistical efficiency gains of the double-bounded dichotomous choice over the single-bounded dichotomous choice. Furthermore, the use of certainty calibration reduces this internal inconsistent pattern in responses and still maintains efficiency gain.
