Migratory birds infestation with ticks in Lithuania in different years

    No full text
Birds are capable of transporting ticks over large distances and are increasingly considered important in the global dispersal of tick-borne pathogens. To define the role of migrating birds as host and disseminators of ticks in Lithuania were analysed immature stage of ticks feeding on different birds’ species. During August-September of 2005 and 2008 migrating birds were captured at Ventes Ragas ornithological station in Lithuania. In 2005 from 41 birds representing 15 species were collected 56 immature stages of Ixodes ricinus ticks. In 2008 were investigated 36 birds of 14 species, and a total of 60 immature stages of Ixodes ricinus ticks were collected. The bird species most infested by I. ricinus in 2008 was Reed Warbler (Acrocephalus scirpaceus) and Trush Nightingale (Luscinia luscinia). The total birds infestation rate in 2008 was higher (1,7 per bird) than in 2005 (1,3 ticks per bird). The infestation with I. ricinus nymphs was more frequent, than with larvae. The results of the study suggested that A. scirpaceus and T. pilaris could be determined as important host and disseminators of I. ricinus ticks in Lithuania.Gamtos mokslų fakultetas / Faculty of Natural SciencesVytauto Didžiojo universitetas / Vytautas Magnus UniversityBiologijos katedra / Department of Biolog

Analysis of thuja (Thuja spp.) biological activity

The object of investigation of this research were leaves and bark of Thuja standishii (Gord.) Carr., Thuja occidentalis L. and Thuja occidentalis ‘Aurescens’. The aim was to measure quantities of flavonoids and phenolic compounds, radical scavenging activities, compare the results to find out which parts of the plant and which species produce the most of the compounds, evaluate the effects of storage allelopathic and antimicrobial properties. Gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy revealed that the main compounds in T. occidentalis leaves and bark are α-thujone, fenchone and β-thujone, in the wood – sabinene, α-thujone and terpin-1-en-4-yl acetate, in the cones – α-fenchene, α-thujone and myrcene. The main compounds in T. occidentalis ’Aurescens‘ leaves are limonene, delta-3-carene and α-pinene, in the bark – caryophyllene and humulene, in the wood – sabinene, terpin-1-en-4-yl acetate and caryophyllene, in the cones – α-pinene and delta-3-carene. The main components in the extract of T. standishii leaves are sabinene and α-pinene, in the essential oil of the leaves – terpinen-4-ol, sabinene and β-selinene, in the distillate of the leaves – terpinen-4-ol and α-terpinol, in the bark and cones – sabinene, α-pinene and myrcene. All of the T. occidentalis extracts had some allelopathic properties against Lepidium sativum L. Vegetation period had little effect on the allelopathic properties. The extracts of T. occidentalis leaves inhibits the growth of L. sativum more than the extracts of cones and bark (including viability, the length of the stem and of the root). Nevertheless, in some cases the extracts made of cones have shown higher effect comparing to the extracts of leaves. Antifungal activity was measured against Penicillium candidum and Penicillium roqueforti. None of the extracts had any inhibition in the growth of these fungi. However, the essential oils had some effect [...]Gamtos mokslų fakultetas / Faculty of Natural SciencesVytauto Didžiojo universitetas / Vytautas Magnus UniversityGamtos ir tech.mokslų tyr.institut / Research Institute of Natural and Technological Science

Lithuanian participial structures in “Joys of spring” (K. Donelaitis, The Seasons) and their transformations in the English translations by T. Tempest and N. Rastenis

The rural epic METAI (Seasons of the Year) by Kristijonas Donelaitis, a milestone of Lithuanian literature, has been translated into 13 different languages. English enjoys two full renderings of METAI: one by Nadas Rastenis (published in Los Angeles in 1967) and the other by Peter Tempest (published in Vilnius in 1985). In addition to the culturally specific content, the language of the poem is characterized as stylistically marked. Particularly prominent is the use of verb-participle clusters (šokinėdami džiaugės; lakstydami žaidė; rykaudami gyrė), which is one of the most challenging areas for a translator to overcome. The different linguistic backgrounds (Lithuanian and British) of the two translators may provide different models of transformations while rendering the specific content created by such clusters. In P. Tempest’s translations the following transformations of the Lithuanian pusdalyvis (half-participle) have been noted: 1) It is rendered by the -ing form followed by the main verb in present tense (line 1 atkopdama budina – ascending wakes); 2) Both forms in the cluster are rendered as verbs in present tense (line 2 pargriaudama juokės – laughs, as it undoes); 3) The semantic meaning of the half-participle is expressed by other means: a. by a descriptive modification of the main verb (line 74 verkdams irgi dejuodams skambino dangų – makes all heaven ring with mournful calls); b. by a modifying adverb (line 616 merdėdams vos sukasi – hardly turns at all); c. by adj+ noun (line 317 viena boba vis lekuodama bėga – a breathless woman dashing by). 4) The half-participle was not rendered in any way (line 117 viešėdama čiauški – you chirp away).Humanitarinių mokslų fakultetas / Faculty of HumanitiesVytauto Didžiojo universitetas / Vytautas Magnus UniversityUžsienio kalbų, lit. ir vert. s. katedra / Department of Foreign Language, Literary and Translation Studie

Comparing consortial repositories: a model-driven analysis

    No full text
This study aims to provide a comparative assessment of different repository consortia as a reference to inform future work in the area. A review of the literature was used to identify repository consortia, and their features were compared. Three models of consortial repositories were derived from this comparison, based on their structure and aims. The consortial models were based around either: creating a shared repository for the members, developing a repository software platform or creating a metadata harvesting service to aggregate content. Using case studies of each type of repository consortium, each model was assessed in terms of its particular strengths and weaknesses. These strengths were then compared across the models to enable those considering a consortial repository project to assess which model, or combination of models, would best address their needs and to aid in project planning
