The infrared glow of the first stars

    No full text
Kashlinsky et al. find a significant cosmic infrared background fluctuation excess on angular scales ≳50 arcsec that cannot be explained by instrumental noise or local foregrounds. The excess has been tentatively attributed to emission from primordial, very massive (Population III, hereafter PopIII) stars formed ≤ 200 Myr after the Big Bang. Using an evolutionary model motivated by independent observations and including various feedback processes, we find that PopIII stars can contribute <40 per cent of the total background intensity (νJν∼ 1–2 nW m−2 sr−1 in the 0.8–8 μm range) produced by all galaxies (hosting both PopIII and PopII stars) at z≥ 5. The infrared fluctuation excess is instead very precisely accounted for by the clustering signal of galaxies at z≥ 5, predominantly hosting PopII stars with masses and properties similar to the present ones

    La biografía de Manuela Cambronero

    No full text
Manuela Cambronero’s biography has been a pending issue until now, given that her figure has not aroused interest and no studies which focus on clarifying her origins and chronology have been published. This information is essential as a starting point for any work on the author, which is why elucidating these unknowns through direct archive research is a sine qua non. Consequently, locating Manuela Cambronero’s baptismal, marriage and death certificates is the only reliable way to dispel any doubt about her provenance and to determine the exact places and dates of the trans-cendental events of her life.

This report is an attempt to analyze the narrative discourse order in the novel “La esposa del Dr. Thorne” (Dr. Thorne’s Wife) of the Venezuelan writer Denzil Romero, in the light of ¨Las cuatro estaciones de Manuela” (“The Four Seasons of Manuela”) of the American author Víctor W. von Hagen, and of “Manuela. Sus diarios perdidos y otros papeles”, (Manuela. Lost Diaries and Other Papers) of the Ecuadorian Carlos Álvarez Saá. This paper is a risky comparison between a book of fiction, presumably based on real facts, where Manuela’s eroticism is the central theme in Romero, the large literary chronicles issued by von Hagen and the compilation and discovery of alleged original and historic texts (letters and diaries) produced by Álvarez Saá. It is also a research exercise where, whimsically, what the official discourse says, as it may be viewed by the school of Venezuela or that of Quito, is mixed with the fictionalization of that discourse. It is, too, a possible vindication of Manuela Sáenz as a person and/or predominant character in the fights for the independence of America beyond her ¨circumstantial¨ relationship with Simón Bolívar. It is, to a certain extent, a look into how literary texts and the perceptions of history about a character (Manuela) tend to a “rearrangement” in present times and how there has been an attempt to consolidate the figure of Manuela Sáenz as a heroine, awarding a victory to what von Hagen calls “the school of Quito”.Si prese l’analisi dell’ordine discorsivo narrativo del romanzo dell’autore venezuelano Denzil Romero, La sposa del Dott.re Thorne, attraverso le comparazioni delle opere dell’autore statunitense Víctor W. Von Hagen, Le quattro stagioni di Manuela e dell’ autore ecuadoregno Carlos Álvarez Saá, Manuela, i suoi diari persi ed altre carte. Cosmic dichotomy in the hosts of rapidly star-forming systems at low and high redshifts

    No full text
This paper presents a compilation of clustering results taken from the literature for galaxies with highly enhanced (SFR ~= [30-103] M&sun; yr-1) star formation activity observed in the redshift range z = [0-3]. We show that, irrespective of the selection technique and only very mildly depending on the star-forming rate, the clustering lengths of these objects present a sharp increase of about a factor 3 between z ˜ 1 and z ˜ 2, going from values of ˜5 Mpc to about 15 Mpc and higher. This behaviour is reflected in the trend of the masses of the dark matter hosts of star-forming galaxies which increase from ˜1011.5 to ˜1013.5 M&sun; between z ˜ 1 and z ˜ 2. Our analysis shows that galaxies which actively form stars at high redshifts are not the same population of sources we observe in the more local universe. In fact, vigorous star formation in the early universe is hosted by very massive structures, while for z ≲ 1 a comparable activity is encountered in much smaller systems, consistent with the downsizing scenario. The available clustering data can hardly be reconciled with merging as the main trigger for intense star formation activity at high redshifts. We further argue that, after a characteristic time-scale of ˜1 Gyr, massive star-forming galaxies at z ≳ 2 evolve into z ≲ 1.5 passive galaxies with large (M* ~= [1011-1012] M&sun;) stellar masses

Sustainable Interventions for the Preservation of Earthen Heritage

    No full text
AbstractEarth is one of the most common material used for the construction of historical villages, whose conservation ensures the transmission of a technological culture that represents the landscape, as well as historical and architectural values. The preservation of this rich, but very fragile, heritage requires the development of projects that should be promoters of sustainable interventions, not only able to guarantee a limit in the consumption of resources, but also the start-up of local development processes, generating externalities that could significantly contribute to the preservation of tangible and intangible assets. As it concerns Piedmont earthen vernacular architecture the development of thematic itineraries could give a significant contribution to the enhancement of this cultural heritage

High-redshift star-forming galaxies and proto-clusters: an insight from clustering studies

    No full text

One of the best ways to shed light on the possible links between high redshift
proto-clusters and galaxy populations is to investigate the clustering
properties of these latter ones as they provide a powerful
method to constrain halo masses.
In this talk I will present clustering results for galaxies with highly
enhanced star-formation activity (SFR>30 Msun/yr) and will show that,
at redshifts z>~1.5, irrespective of the selection technique and only very
mildly depending on their SFR, they all reside in structures of masses >
10^13.5 Msun, i.e. they are ubiquitously located in over-dense structures
such as proto-clusters. A striking example of the above result is provided by
the distribution of high-redshift star-forming galaxies in the GOODS-South as
more than half of these sources is found to reside in an
unvirialised, filamentary structure, centered at z~2.2, which extends all along the field.
Our data indicate an enhanced star-forming activity for
the galaxies belonging to the proto-cluster with respect to those in the field.
Finally, we will also show how such structures are a rather common event
in the epoch which coincides with the peak of star formation activity.

</p&gt
