”How Much Data is Enough?” Learning curves for machine learning: Investigating alternatives to the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for learning curve extrapolation
The conducted research explores fitting algorithms for learning curves. Learning curves describe how the performance of a machine learning model changes with the size of the training input. Therefore, fitting these learning curves and extrapolating them can help determine the required data set size for any desired performance. The paper specifically explores the Learning Curve Database (LCDB) and investigates alternative fitting algorithms to the employed Levenberg-Marquardt (LM). These algorithms are Gradient Descent and BFGS, and the paper aims to determine whether they are more suitable for fitting learning curves than LM. The algorithms were implemented, both in their default and optimised states, and the results were compared to LM. The results measured mean-squared error (MSE), L1 Loss, individual parametric model performance, and computation time. The findings showed that Gradient Descent is not a suitable alternative to LM; however, BFGS proved to be competitive, as it is practically identical in performance while being significantly faster than LM. The results answered the proposed aim of the paper and generated new questions that need answering. Further exploration of the BFGS algorithm and its application on learning curve fitting is recommended. Comparisons between the MSE distribution of LM and BFGS can be further explored, as well as comparisons on new parametric models, learners, and datasets.CSE3000 Research ProjectComputer Science and Engineerin
Contribution to the diving beetles and whirligig beetles study (Coleoptera: Dytiscoidea, Gyrinoidea)
Within the Cri§ program, the author has made an itinerant study concerning the Dytiscoidea and Gyrinoidea fauna, from the hydrographical basins of Cri§ul Alb and Crijul Negru rivers. The material sampling has been made from the following sites: Aciuja lake (quarry), Aciufa-Avram Iancu (Small pools of the T2cii (all in the dept. of Arad-western Romania - for the Cri§ul Alb river), Poiana village upstream (in the dept of Bihor) and Zerind (Arad dept. - for the Cri§ul Negru river). After the analyses of the collected material, we are established larger or more strict relationships between the different species and biotopes. Generally, we mention a relative good quality for the studied biotopes
Major threats for amphibian and reptiles species in the Transylvanian rivers' basins : recommended monitoring methods
The author tries to identify the major threats for amphibian and reptile species in the Transylvanian rivers' basins. The herpetological investigations were performed during summertime in the hydrographic basins of Cri?ul Negru, Some? and Olt rivers, in the period 1997-1999. Two monitoring methods were used, occasional findings and information from local people. The most important factor in the dcclinc of herpetofauna from Transylvanian river's basins seems to be the loss of natural habitats. But the author considers that it is the time for quantitative field research, for a better study of herpetofauna conservation status. Finally, a few monitoring methods are proposed

In vivo evaluation of xenogeneic acellular bovine fascia grafts in the reconstruction of abdominal wall defects in swine experimental model
Public Institution State University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Nicolae Testemiţanu”,
PMSI Mother and Child Institute, Chisinau, Republic of MoldovaABSTRACT
In this study autor purpose to evaluate the feasibility of using bovine fascia in the experimental substitution
of the fascial plan for the reconstruction of major anterior abdominal wall defects in the experimental
model.
Plastic reconstruction of the surgically induced abdominal wall defect using decellularized bovine fascia
grafts was performed on 5-week-old Landrace pigs (3 animals) in which the abdominal wall defect of 10x5.0
cm was surgically induced with the involvement of all layers, including the peritoneum. The animals were
subsequently euthanized 90 days after the intervention. For decellularization, sterile 0.5% SDS solution
(HiMedia) was used in volume required to obtain acellular tissues. The solution was changed every 24 hours
for 72 hours.
The preventive results of the histopathological examination allowed the author to conclude that the use
of decellularized bovine fascia grafts in the experimental model is characterized by the dominance of active
regenerative processes with tissue remodeling and host cell invasion, the xenogeneic implant tissues being
subjected to gradual degradation and substituted with the neoformed host connective tissue, the rationale
of the usefulness of this biological material requiring additional comparative and clinical immunological
studies.
The results of this experimental study allow us to conclude the following that the usage of bovine fascia
acellular grafts as an alternative xenogeneic biological implant in reconstructive surgery of abdominal wall
defects, this option requiring additional comparative and clinical immunological studies
Cultural Heritage as an Inspiration for Placemaking in the Historic City: A Transversal Approach
Many European cities are in crisis since most of them are struggling to socially and culturally move forward from the historic and recreational values that made them of interest to the global visitor. In 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) started assessing new forms of placemaking in the historic city through the UNESCO Historic Urban Landscape Approach. The same year, the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) highlighted the importance of developing innovative and transversal approaches to examine cultural development in historic human settlements. Within this context, this chapter analyses placemaking in four European historic cities. Transversal approaches on how relational dynamics impact on the historic context will be scrutinized from the realm of the site-specific arts in the city of Belgrade (Serbia), for archaeology the case of analysis is in Bucharest (Romania), for architecture the context is Ávila (Spain) and for urban planning it is Hamburg (Germany). This transversal approach involves using different disciplines to comprehend placemaking from a polyhedral point of view. Therefore, it brings together complementary forms of heritage appropriation – including the construction of the heritage concept over time – methods and strategies that help integrate cultural expressions, practices and products as potential relational dynamics. To do so, we will define stakeholders such as minorities, communities and powerful entities and target groups. Methodologically, approaches will deepen the understanding of phenomenological, dynamic-relational and contextual notions of placemaking that help clarify how historic cities, tools and communities are all interconnected. The discussion will establish parallelisms between the experiences to clarify the implications of placemaking according to the field of approach and the prospects for those places. Cultural expressions and heritage regulation can provide new forms of appropriation and integration in permanent scenarios of the past. Accordingly, contemporary mutable relationships between places and society are at stake in the context of urban planning and the UNESCO Historic Urban Landscape Approach and in defining the future of historic cities. In conclusion, we point towards (1) imagining how placemaking and cultural heritage serve to delineate new forms of heritage-making in the historic city, and (2) to what extent this requires defining ethical forms of culture-based placemaking practices.History, Form & Aesthetic
Diferite "voci" în "Meșterul Manole" de Lucian Blaga
There are several characters with a brief appearance in the history of the drama, thus having an apparent minor significance in designing the play. They seem to be mere “working tools” for the playwright. However when relating them to the major issues of the literary product and if integrating them in a larger vision of the whole creation of the author their significance and role can be outlined in a more adequate manner. The Herald may stand for the impossibility of the common man to understand the drama of the artist, for the incapacity of a mediocre person to assimilate the aspirations of the genius. The Second Carter is a good opportunity to express the middle-ages relations between the Orthodoxy of the Romanians and the Lutheranism of the Saxons in Transylvania, the Protestantism and the whole religious Reform having been rejected naturally by the Romanian people. The Third Carter is the pretext to express in an artistic manner a historical reality, i.e. the major role Târgovişte played as a spiritual focal point for the Romanian middle-ages Orthodoxy, but also as a centre for the religious printings in Romanian or Slavonic languages. Also one can distinguish the suggestion of a light irony on the behalf of the author with regards to the human prosaic hypostasis of the Romanian Orthodox priests when associating their two fundamental habits, anointing the priests and taking care of their own housekeeping. The Voivode is an image of a person with a subtle, diplomatic intelligence that leaves room for a waggish wit. He is fully aware of his condition as patron of church building. He hesitates between two decisions he should make concerning Manole the Craftsman: either to highly praise the artist, the creator or to sentence to death the human murderer. Whichever decision he would make, he knows very well his prerogative as a ruler is absolute and supreme, the middle-ages autocracy allowing him anything. Having a refined spirit, the Voivode understands from the very beginning both the superlative features of the creation and the sacrifice of the creator. His attitude seems to be benevolent, conciliatory, as he is very satisfied with the “gift” of the Masons – in his view the church belongs both to the ruler and to God. It becomes obvious the Voivode urges Manole to enjoy the “fruit of his endeavor and of his hands”. He forgives Manole, having been convinced that at the Last Judgment the church Manole has built would exculpate him of all sins. After Manole commits suicide the Voivode pays him the proper respect. The whole portrait configures the Voivode as an exceptional ambassador of his people, at a far distance from the bloody figure portrayed in some variants of the folk ballad, closer to the real historical character, the benefactor of the Argeş Monastery, Neagoe
Factorii care determină eficiența activității de aplicare a dreptului de către organele autorităților publice
The efficiency of the state organs’ activity greatly depends on the efficiency of the act itself of applying law in the process of taking decisions, namely on the impact of this act upon the regulated social relations. The activity of state organs is a personalized one, being exercised by definite subjects, named agents of the state power and this is why we talk about a great number of factors and conditions that influence the quality and efficiency of the applying law activity. The investigation carried out in this paper demonstrates once more that it is impossible to analyse exclusively from a juridical expectation the factors and conditions that determine the quality and efficiency of the mentioned activity, being necessary to study them from the sociological and psychological point of view, too. So, besides such conditions as the quality of national legislation, the correct and legal system of administration, the level of civil servants professionalism, the author underlines the major importance of the civil servants’ level of juridical culture. When the level of juridical culture and conscience of the civil servants corresponds to a minimal satisfactory level for the detained function, it becomes real to talk about the presumption of their impartiality and integrity in the law applying process, by improving legal, coherent and scientifically based decisional mechanisms. The paper corollary is based on the idea of the professional ethics of the civil servants, on their moral characteristics and system of values. For ensuring the efficiency of the activity of applying law by the organs of the state power, first of all, there must be created functional conditions to prevent actions and decisions based on individual interest and to stimulate legal, well-considered and consciously assumed decisions
Comparison of the Results Obtained in Simulation of SERB Dampers Using Two Different Hysteresis Models
This paper presents the difference between the results obtained with GenEcAm in simulating the seismic behavior of a P + 10E building equipped with SERB dampers modeled with two hysteresis models, namely the classic Bouc-Wen model and a Bouc-Wen modified model Bouc-Wen_Exp, in order to highlight the most appropriate theoretical model for modeling these dampers. The GenEcAm program is created by the author for the dynamic analysis during seism for structures of buildings equipped with different earthquake damping systems, with the possibility to use 9 different theoretical models of hysteresis for simulating the hysterical behavior of seismic energy dissipation devices that fit the antiseismic system of the analysed building.</jats:p
