[Book Review]: "The Cinema of Aki Kaurismaki: Contrarian Stories"
Get PDFWhile Aki Kaurismäki’s cinema can be seen as an instance of postmodern aesthetics, Andrew Nestingen claims in The Cinema of Aki Kaurismäki: Contrarian Stories that his films’ melodramatic seriousness and moral purpose situates them in a more modernist framework (21), casting him with the likes of Lars von Trier, Michael Haneke and Steven Soderbergh, rather than Quentin Tarantino, Wes Anderson or the Coen Brothers. That being said, Kaurismäki’s access to film archives and his voracious consumption of films during his teenage years places him alongside François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Jim Jarmusch and Tarantino as a cinephile (and thus pomo?) auteur. These seemingly contradictory facets of Kaurismäki’s work nonetheless exemplify the ambivalence that Nestingen sees as being critical to understanding his work..

No full textYÖK Tez No: 649890Bu tez çalışması bir orijinal Netflix dizisi olan Mindhunter özelinden Netflix'te LGBTIQ+ söylemlerinin homoseksüel tüketici kültürüne katkısı ve bu tüketici kültürünün asimilasyonist yapısını incelemiş, bunu yaparken de postmodern farklılık ve çok seslilik söylemlerinin bu kültürü oluşturmadaki rolünü ortaya koymuştur. Eleştirel söylem analizinin uygulandığı bu çalışmada bağlamsal, disiplinler arası ve eklektik bir inceleme yapmak için öncelikle detaylı bir teorik ve kavramsal araştırma yapılmış, tarihsel gelişmeler sıralanmıştır. Sonrasında postmodern, feminizm, LGBTIQ+ hareketi ve queer teorisi birlikte incelenmiş, tarihsel bağlamları da göz önünde bulundurularak, postmodern etkiler tespit edilmiştir. Mindhunter dizisinden elde edilen söylemlerde güdülen ideolojik, sosyolojik amaçlar, postmodern etkiler, bilinçli ya da bilinçsiz yanlılık tartışılmış, güç ve iktidar ilişkilerindeki kanunlaştırma, pekiştirme, meşrulaştırma ve yeniden inşa prosedürleri, postmodern ve neoliberalizmin birlikte incelenmesiyle aydınlatılmıştır. Ele alınan dizinin gerçek yaşam hikâyeleri ve karakterlerine dayanıyor oluşu ve diziye kaynaklık eden Mindhunter kitabının incelenmesi sayesinde, diziye eklenen LGBTIQ+ söylemlerinin bağlamları fark edilmiş ve hikâyenin gerçek yaşamdan kurgusal bir dünyaya aktarılırken eklenen veya çıkarılan unsurları ve bunların sebep ve sonuçları tartışılmıştır. Postmodernizmin neoliberalizme uygun kültürel altyapıyı nasıl sağladığı, Netflix'in kendi özelinde kapital sınıfın çıkarlarını nasıl koruduğu ve artan popülerliğiyle LGBTIQ+ hareketinin bağlamından koparılarak Foucault'un (2018) da ifadeleriyle, iktidarın temsil etmeye başladığı özneleri artan söylemlerle yeniden inşa ediş sürecinin 21. yüzyıldaki karşılığı aydınlatılmıştır. Bu araştırma disiplinler arası bir çalışmadır ve postmodern teorinin felsefe, medya, tarih, sosyoloji, cinsiyet çalışmaları, siyaset gibi birçok disipline olan etkisini, bu çalışmanın konusu bağlamında anlaşılır kılarak literatüre önemli bir katkı sağlamıştır.This thesis is a specific analysis of the discourses on the contribution of Netflix to the LGBTIQ+ consumer culture and the assimilationist structure of this culture in the original Netflix series "Mindhunter", where the role of postmodern's diversity and multivocality discourses in creating this culture is put forth. In this study where a critical discourse analysis was applied, in order to conduct a contextual, interdisciplinary and eclectic analysis, after a detailed theoretical and conceptual research was done, a sequence of historical developments was presented. Subsequently, postmodern, feminism, the LGBTIQ+ movement and queer theory were analysed together and the effects of postmoden were identified while also taking into consideration the historical background. As part of the discourses obtained in the "Mindhunter" series the pursued ideological and sociological purposes, the postmodern effects and conscious or unconscious bias were discussed and the legalisation, enhancement, legitimization and reconstructive procedures of the relationship between hegemony and power were clarified together with an analysis on postmodern and neoliberalism. Considering the fact that the series is based on a real life story and thanks to the analysis of the book "Mindhunter" which was a source for the series, the added context of the LGBTIQ+ discourses was noticed and the causes and consequences of added or removed elements during the transfer of the story from a real life to a fictional world were discussed. Some of the topic enlightened here are how postmodernism provides a cultural foundation for neoliberalism, specifically how Netflix protects the interests of the capital class and with its increasing popularity, detaches the LGBTIQ+ movement from its context, in the words of Foucault (2018) the 21st-century response to the process of rebuilding the subjects that are being represented by the power with increasing discourses. This thesis is a multidisciplinary study which aims to make an important contribution to the literature by clearly presenting the effect of postmodern theory in different disciplines such as philosophy, media, history, sociology, gender studies, or politics, in context of the topic of this study
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
