Casein kinase 1 delta regulates the pace of the mammalian circadian clock
Co-authors Kazuhiko K. Machida and Elizabeth A. Yu are students in the Neuroscience program in the Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) at UMass Medical School. Elizabeth Yu is also in GSBS' MD/PhD Program.Both casein kinase 1 delta (CK1delta) and epsilon (CK1epsilon) phosphorylate core clock proteins of the mammalian circadian oscillator. To assess the roles of CK1delta and CK1epsilon in the circadian clock mechanism, we generated mice in which the genes encoding these proteins (Csnk1d and Csnk1e, respectively) could be disrupted using the Cre-loxP system. Cre-mediated excision of the floxed exon 2 from Csnk1d led to in-frame splicing and production of a deletion mutant protein (CK1delta(Delta2)). This product is nonfunctional. Mice homozygous for the allele lacking exon 2 die in the perinatal period, so we generated mice with liver-specific disruption of CK1delta. In livers from these mice, daytime levels of nuclear PER proteins, and PER-CRY-CLOCK complexes were elevated. In vitro, the half-life of PER2 was increased by approximately 20%, and the period of PER2::luciferase bioluminescence rhythms was 2 h longer than in controls. Fibroblast cultures from CK1delta-deficient embryos also had long-period rhythms. In contrast, disruption of the gene encoding CK1epsilon did not alter these circadian endpoints. These results reveal important functional differences between CK1delta and CK1epsilon: CK1delta plays an unexpectedly important role in maintaining the 24-h circadian cycle length.MD/PhDNeuroscienc
Reflection and transmission in a neutron-spin test of the quantum Zeno effect
The dynamics of a quantum system undergoing frequent "measurements," leading to the so-called quantum Zeno effect, is examined on the basis of a neutron-spin experiment recently proposed for its demonstration. Unlike in all previous studies, the spatial degrees of freedom of the neutron are duly taken into account. Their inclusion in the analysis is important for two reasons: first, neutron-reflection effects are shown to be very important; second, the evolution may rum out to be totally different from the ideal case. Our results can be interpreted in terms of a rigorous theorem due to Misra and Sudarshan: indeed we clarify that, in contrast with a widespread belief, a quantum Zeno effect does not halt the evolution of a quantum system; it rather modifies it, by forcing the system to remain in a certain subspace, defined by the very measurement performed. Decoherence and dephasing in a quantum measurement process
We numerically simulate the quantum measurement process by modeling the measuring apparatus as a one-dimensional Dirac comb that interacts with an incoming object particle. The global effect of the apparatus can be well schematized in terms of the total transmission probability and the decoherence parameter, which quantitatively characterizes the loss of quantum-mechanical coherence and the wave-function collapse by measurement. These two quantities alone enable one to judge whether the apparatus works well or not as a detection system. We derive simple theoretical formulas that are in excellent agreement with the numerical results, and can be very useful in order to make a ''design theory'' of a measuring system (detector). Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Expanding “Communities and Collections” in the K-State Research Exchange (K-REx) to benefit the K-State Community and Beyond
Kansas State University has used its institutional repository, the K-State Research Exchange (K-REx), to store and share its first year experience program, K-State First, and notably its common reading program, K-State First Book. We have done so with the aim that the accessibility and preservation of these documents ensures program stability, promotes engagement with first year programming, and provides the ability to foster growth,educational opportunities, and community building outside of K-State. Moving away from research concentrated repositories and taking a more holistic approach to scholarship, especially when realizing the pedagogical significance of collaborative campus programming, institutions can showcase, discover, preserve, and grow programs that shape campus communities and engagement.
This session will provide an overview of K-REx and spotlight the digital archive of the university’s first year experience program and common reading program, K-State First Book. We will discuss the benefits and challenges to expanding the purview of your repositories. We talkthrough the types of materials we decide to host in our repository and why we share what we do. We will also provide recommendations on new ways to evaluate what belongs in institutional repositories and how this diversity can benefit your program, your institution, the community, and others
