This work discusses aspects of the translation into Spanish of the short story "O espelho" ["The mirror"] by Machado de Assis, having my own translation, carried out for this purpose, and a previous one by antiago Kovadloff as the objects of this discussion. The fantastic component within the short story is made explicit and defended as an important element to the translation. The commentaries start from examples of concrete text taken from the translation and the original text. The theoretical discussion is focused on the presence of the "foreignness" in the translation, on the translation of the "letter" of the short story - with special reference to its collocational profile and the intimate connection between form and content - and on the literary character of the translation - specially by means of an example based on a Translator's Note-

Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Estudos da Tradução, Florianópolis, 2010This thesis is based on a research project on the translations of Machado de Assis published in Italy. It aims to verify how and in what way the Brazilian author is positioned in Italian literary culture, and based on this it moves on to describe the importance of translational and critical activities in the reception of a writer from a peripheral literary system by another literary system. Peeter Torop#s concept of total translation is the main theoretical reference adopted for the individuation of the translational strategies for Machado de Assis# works in general, based on the stylistic description of his criticism, and of O Anjo Rafael [The Angel Raphael] in particular. This little known short story by Machado de Assis is presented, analysed and translated for the first time into Italian. In conclusion observations and commentaries on the translational process will show the poetics of translation adopted in this particular translation of Machado de Assis short story.

Gender and generation in native title

    No full text
While gender and age are often noted as being important dimensions of Indigenous leadership and governance, they have rarely been examined in detail. This paper focuses specifically on the gender and age of directors on the boards of prescribed bodies corporate (PBCs), the corporations established to hold and/or manage native title rights and interests. A predominant view persists of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women as excluded or marginalised in native title. Statistical data for the year 2011–12 reveals, however, that women’s representation on PBC boards is higher than that found in mainstream sectors, while the literature reveals a complex picture of cultural, historical, demographic, institutional and intercultural factors that influence men’s and women’s participation and power in the native title arena. A key generational concern is the relatively low number of older people and the growing number of young people in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population. Viewed in relation to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population and projected changes, the pool of potential PBC directors looks likely to grow in coming years. This paper argues that, as an increasingly significant sector, PBCs have the potential to both contribute to and benefit from the strengthening of community capacity but this potential will not be realised until the constraints on the capacity of PBCs to meet their statutory obligations and pursue native title holder aspirations are addressed. Building audiences: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts

    No full text
Building Audiences examines the barriers to and the strategies for increasing audiences in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts sector. This research investigates the attitudes, beliefs and behaviours of current and potential audiences. What is in the report? The findings reveal the key barriers facing audience attendance include: uncertainty about how to behave at cultural events and fear of offending lack of awareness with audiences not actively seeking information about Indigenous arts and outdated perceptions of the sector – that it is only perceived as ‘serious or educational’. Building Audiences also considered several strategies to build audiences for Indigenous arts: providing skills development, advice and resourcing to Indigenous practitioners within the arts sector; increasing representation of Indigenous artists in the main programing of arts companies by including more Indigenous people in decision making roles; promoting relationships between Indigenous arts and non-Indigenous companies to present their work to wider audiences; introducing children and young people to Indigenous arts through schools and extracurricular activities; allowing audiences to feel comfortable engaging by creating accessible experiences; implementing long-term strategies to change negative perceptions of Indigenous arts. The project was commissioned by the Australia Council for the Arts and funding partners include Australia Council for the Arts; Faculty of Business and Law and Institute of Koorie Education, Deakin University; Melbourne Business School, The University of Melbourne

A critical assessment of the theology of Camilo Torres in the light of Latin American theology : a theological paradigm for peace with justice for Colombia

    No full text
The thesis aims to provide a critical assessment of Camilo Torres’ concept of efficacious love in the light of a hermeneutics and ethics of liberation, to contribute theoretically to theological reflection upon the mission of the Protestant and Roman Catholic churches in Colombia, and generally in Latin America. It proposes the thesis that the theology of Camilo Torres, viewed from the perspective of a hermeneutics and an ethics of liberation, can be foundational for seeking, constructing, and sustaining peace with justice in a context of oppression and violence. Based on the theological analysis, the academic and spiritual motivation should respond to two fundamental questions in our academic inquiry: what foundation exists in Camilo Torres’ theology for the construction of a just, peaceful, liberative society and to enable proximity to the excluded, victimized, and poor population in Colombia to be achieved? And how can we as Christians respond to the grace of God in living efficaciously the values of the Kingdom of God, in order to bring structural changes in Colombia? The implications of the answers to those questions would result in the possibility to execute an integrating theological proposal for peace with justice for the church in Colombia. In an interpretative mode, we consider critically the multidisciplinary interaction of some of the theological foundations of liberation theology. Our task consists in clarifying and constructing theological presuppositions for a dialectical examination of the historical and current situation in Colombia, viewed in the light of the internal problems and realities. Thus, it is our intention in order to attempt a significant interdisciplinary juncture, to examine and interpret such relevant concepts as efficacious love, faith with works, kenosis, hypostatic union, hermeneutics and ethics of liberation, social justice, personal and collective socio-political conversion, and a praxis of faith as the church’s mission in response to the Colombian context of poverty and violence

The virtual image : Brazilian literature in English translation

    No full text
The aim of this thesis is to examine how the virtual image of Brazil and its literature is constructed in the Anglo-American world. To this end, a survey of Brazilian literary works in English translation was carried out. Having gathered this data, it became possible to establish correlations between the historical moments when such translations were made, when their number increased, and the events occurring at those times in the international panorama, as well as to look into the role of sponsors, publishers and translators in the selection and production of such translations. The data also allowed a profile of Brazilian literary works in English translation to be drawn. It became possible to suggest that such works fall into four main categories: `authorial works', 'topical works', `ambassadorial works' and `consumer-oriented works'. In order to look more closely into how the translation process has helped to shape the virtual image of Brazilian literary works in the Anglo-American world, an analysis of a sample of translations of such works was made. Included in this sample were the translations of works by Machado de Asis, by Indianist and Regionalist wirters, culminating in an examination of translations of GuimarAes Rosa's works. Having looked at these aspects of the translation process, what remained to be done was to investigate to what extent Brazilian literary works in English translation are read by the English- speaking public. To this end, a survey of availability and library readership was undertaken. Finally, a reading experiment was carried out in which native speakers of English were asked to read the short story 'A terceira margem do rio', by GuimarAes Rosa. The conclusion attempts to pull all these threads together and to indicate directions for further research

Tradução comentada do conto Lizards in Jamshyd's Courtyard, de William Faulkner

This essay has its origins in studies about translation theories and in the knowledge acquisition about the aspects related with the production of the original work. Just after those studies, was established the position as translator. And only after the contextualization of the original work and the analysis of the author characteristics it was started the translation process of the tale Lizards in Jamshyd's Courtyard written by William Faulkner, this tale is part of the novel Hamlet written by the same author. To maintain the strength of the original tale there was not just a concern about getting equivalents or translating word by word , but was to be very close to the characteristics of the original tale; considering what is heterogeneous in the linguistic and cultural situations between the English language in which the original tale was written, and the Portuguese language from Brazil where the tale has been translated. The hypothesis, the possible solutions to the problems found, and the decisions taken in this research are based on: Lawrence Venutti, Georges Mounin, John C. Cattford and Antoine Berman's theories
