Obesity, inflammation, toll-like Receptor 4 and fatty acids
No full textObesity leads to an inflammatory condition that is directly involved in the etiology of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and certain types of cancer. The classic inflammatory response is an acute reaction to infections or to tissue injuries, and it tends to move towards resolution and homeostasis. However, the inflammatory process that was observed in individuals affected by obesity and metabolic syndrome differs from the classical inflammatory response in certain respects. This inflammatory process manifests itself systemically and it is characterized by a chronic low-intensity reaction. The toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling pathway is acknowledged as one of the main triggers of the obesity-induced inflammatory response. The aim of the present review is to describe the role that is played by the TLR4 signaling pathway in the inflammatory response and its modulation by saturated and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Studies indicate that saturated fatty acids can induce inflammation by activating the TLR4 signaling pathway. Conversely, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, exert anti-inflammatory actions through the attenuation of the activation of the TLR4 signaling pathway by either lipopolysaccharides or saturated fatty acids

A study of Lennard-Jones equivalent analytical relationships for modeling viscosities
No full textThe analysis of the viscosity-density-temperature relationship of the Lennard-Jones (LJ) fluid was studied over a wide range of temperature and density. The viscosities of LJ fluids were evaluated through the qualitative trends generated by combining the LJ and equivalent analytical relationships (EAR). It was found that the viscosity predictions were based only on the molecular weight. Lennard-Jones viscosities in wide ranges of temperature and density: Fast calculations using a steady-state periodic perturbation method
No full textA method for fast calculation of viscosity from molecular dynamics simulation is revisited. The method consists of using a steady-state periodic perturbation. A methodology to choose the amplitude of the external perturbation, which is one of the major practical issues in the original technique of Gosling et al. [Mol. Phys. 26: 1475 (1973)] is proposed. The amplitude of the perturbation required for fast caculations and the viscosity values for wide ranges of temperature and density of the Lennard-Jones (LJ) model fluid are reported. The viscosity results are in agreement with recent LJ viscosity calculations. Additionally, the simulations demonstrate that the proposed approach is suitable to efficiently generate viscosity data of good quality.Fil: Vasquez, V.R.. No full textA reabilitação e recuperação de edifícios tem ganho uma crescente importância no
exercício da arquitectura. Concretamente, a reabilitação e recuperação de aldeias do interior
de Portugal, tem sido uma aposta que procura não só chamar a atenção para a desertificação
do interior, mas também dinamizá-lo social e economicamente, através do turismo rural.
Banrezes, situada no conselho de Macedo de Cavaleiros, distrito de Bragança está
completamente desabitada há mais de 30 anos, e foi deixada ao abandono e à mercê das
forças da natureza. O seu estado de degradação não permite uma reabilitação fiel ao original,
pelo que a proposta assentará numa linha contêmporânea, marcada pelo contraste. É
intenção deste projecto trazer vida a esta aldeia através da coesistência da marca de dois
tempos: o anterior à ruína e abandono e o contemporâneo.The rehabilitation and restoration of buildings has gained an increasing importance in
the exercise of architecture. Specifically, the rehabilitation and restoration of the interior
villages of Portugal, has been a bet which seeks not only to draw attention to the
desertification of the Interior, but also boost the interior social and economically through
rural tourism.
Banrezes, located in Macedo de Cavaleiros, distrito de Bragança is completely
uninhabited for more than 30 years, and was left to the abandon and the forces of nature. It’s
degradated state does not allow a rehabilitation truly according with the original. In that
sense, the project will be directed in a contemporary line, marked by the contrast. It is
intended to bring life to this village through the coexistence of the brand of two times: the
