Gender stereotypes in the media, online culture and language

    No full text
This module intends to offer an overview of the main gender issues in offline and online social contexts as they have developed in recent decades, thanks to the progressive growth of collective and individual sensitivity towards the relationship between sexual identity and gender identity, with particular attention to the academic world. Through theoretical insights and interactive activities, academic staff acquire knowledge, skills, strategies and tools to use in their professional role to ensure inclusive learning and egalitarian opportunities for students and staff of all genders

Improving Intercultural and Inclusive Competence of Higher Education Institutions. A Training Manual

    No full text
The project STATUS (Steering Transition and Advancement of Tertiary Underrepresented Students) builds upon these recommendations from the Council of Europe, emphasizing the importance of higher education institutions in meeting diverse societal expectations and fulfilling multiple objectives beyond knowledge dissemination. This Training Manual has been collaboratively developed by STATUS partners. It offers a series of theoretical insights and practical activities regarding intercultural, gender and communication issues so that HEIs staff (both teaching and non-teaching) may improve their competence in developing strategies and initiatives to increase the enrollment rates and academic performance of underrepresented and vulnerable students. It includes three modules. The first module was developed by the Preschool Teacher Training and Medical College in Vršac, Serbia and is divided into two parts: the first part – Interculturality. (In)visible borders and potentials – was written by Ivana Đorđev, Tanja Nedimović, Adrijan Božin, Radmila Palinkašević, Biljana Vujasin, and Snežana Prtljaga; the second part – Heuristics and interculturality. A meeting point – was written by Danica Veselinov, Nataša Sturza Milić, Ljiljana Kelemen Milojević, and Nevena Čolakov. The second module – Gender stereotypes in the media, online culture and language – was written by Gianna Cappello and Paola Macaluso (University of Palermo) and Giulia Tarantino and Shu De Francesco (CESIE, Palermo). The third module – The fringes and the margins of interculturality. Socially-deprived areas students on the move – was written by Teodora Popescu and Maria-Crina Herţeg (“December 1, 1918” University, Romania) and Alcina Maria Pereira de Sousa and Gonçalo Nuno Ramos Ferreira de Gouveia (University of Madeira, Portugal)

Tailoring the Interface of Biomaterials to Design Effective Scaffolds

    No full text
Tissue engineering (TE) is a multidisciplinary science, which including principles from material science, biology and medicine aims to develop biological substitutes to restore damaged tissues and organs. A major challenge in TE is the choice of suitable biomaterial to fabricate a scaffold that mimics native extracellular matrix guiding resident stem cells to regenerate the functional tissue. Ideally, the biomaterial should be tailored in order that the final scaffold would be (i) biodegradable to be gradually replaced by regenerating new tissue, (ii) mechanically similar to the tissue to regenerate, (iii) porous to allow cell growth as nutrient, oxygen and waste transport and (iv) bioactive to promote cell adhesion and differentiation. With this perspective, this review discusses the options and challenges facing biomaterial selection when a scaffold has to be designed. We highlight the possibilities in the final mold the materials should assume and the most effective techniques for its fabrication depending on the target tissue, including the alternatives to ameliorate its bioactivity. Furthermore, particular attention has been given to the influence that all these aspects have on resident cells considering the frontiers of materiobiology. In addition, a focus on chitosan as a versatile biomaterial for TE scaffold fabrication has been done, highlighting its latest advances in the literature on bone, skin, cartilage and cornea TE

Teachers’ Work-Related Well-Being in Times of COVID-19: The Effects of Technostress and Online Teaching

    No full text
Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the first measures implemented in Italy was the transition from frontal teaching to online teaching. The sudden need to use technologies to perform their job has added a source of stress to teachers’ work: so-called technostress. The difficulties experienced in this transition may also have affected the perception of work-related well-being, although other variables, such as the perception of the meaningfulness of work, could alleviate this sense of uneasiness. The study aims to examine the relationships between technostress, online teaching, pleasure in working, and meaningful work perceptions among 219 teachers from different school grades through a moderated mediation model. The results confirm negative associations between technostress and pleasure in working, although this relationship varies according to the levels of perceived meaningfulness. Analyzing the factors related to teachers’ perceptions of their work, both in general and during the pandemic situation, is useful for tracing new coping strategies and planning interventions to implement new teaching methods. Further implications concerning the protective role of meaningful work are discussed

Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the first measures implemented in Italy was the transition from frontal teaching to e-learning. The sudden need to use technologies to perform their job has added a source of stress to teachers’ work, the so-called technostress. The difficulties experienced in this transition may also have affected the perception of work-related well-being, although other variables, such as the perception of the meaningfulness of work, could alleviate this sense of uneasiness. Analyzing the factors related to teachers’ perceptions of their work, both in general and during the pandemic situation, is useful for tracing new coping strategies and planning interventions to implement new teaching methods. Further implications concern the protective role of meaningful work, and the low attention given to this aspect, in Italy, in the selection of teachers
