Introduction to Gaze in Human-Robot Communication
Gaze in Human-Robot Communication is a volume collecting recent research studying gaze behaviour in human-robot interaction (HRI). The selected articles draw inspiration from related research into gaze in human-human interaction in fields ranging from ethnography to neuroscience. The major themes of these articles include: the experimental investigation of human responses to robot gaze, the investigation of the impact of coordinating gaze acts with speech, and the development of hardware and software technologies for enabling robot gaze. This volume provides an excellent introduction to the depth and breadth of this growing research area in HRI. The highly interdisciplinary nature of the work presented should make it of interest both to robotics researchers and to researchers from other fields with an interest in the role of gaze in communication
Storypair: Supporting Co-Reading in Bilingual Immigrant Families through Generative Language
Senior Honors Thesis, Department of Computer Sciences, University of Wisconsin-MadisonReading is an essential yet challenging skill in child education, particularly for immigrant families navigating bilingual environments. This study explores how generative language models (LLMs) can enhance parent-child co-reading within these families. Informed by a formative study with ten immigrant families, I present the design, prototyping, and evaluation of StoryPAIR (Parent AI Integrated Reading), an interactive reading interface designed to complement physical books, for bilingual and immigrant families. StoryPAIR leverages language support widgets, LLM-powered question generation and answering, and learning session reviews to augment the co-reading experience. An initial user study with eight parent-child pairs from immigrant families indicates that StoryPAIR successfully engages both parents and children and enhances interaction flow
Interactive Robotics in Education: Designing and Evaluating Adaptive Visual and Speech Interfaces
Senior Honors Thesis, Department of Computer Sciences, University of Wisconsin-MadisonThis study explores the design and development of two adaptive interfaces—Visual and Speech Dialogue—for educational robots, guided by the CAM (Capability, Availability, Motivation) framework. Aiming to enhance parent-robot-child collaboration, the interfaces dynamically adjust to contextual factors such as user availability, subject familiarity, and emotional readiness. The Visual Interface provides a graphical platform for customizing daily study plans through user input, while the Speech Dialogue Interface leverages natural language processing and sentiment analysis to tailor robot responses during conversation. Each interface addresses unique situational needs: the Visual Interface supports structured learning with clear planning tools, while the Speech Interface enables hands-free, emotionally responsive interactions. Preliminary evaluation highlights the complementary strengths of both systems and their potential to support flexible, personalized educational experiences. By integrating user context into interaction design, this work advances the role of educational robotics in home learning environments. Future research will focus on real-world testing and iterative improvements to maximize usability, engagement, and pedagogical value
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Monitoring the Acceptance of a Social Service Robot in a Shopping Mall:First Results
People tend to respond positively to social service robots in field trials in public places. Less is known how their perceptions and attitudes evolve if the same robot is presented frequently in the same service setting and the novelty effect wears off. We have carried out two first questionnaire surveys to start monitoring shopping mall customers' attitudes and acceptance of a social service robot in the mall for a longer term (three years). The first survey concerned the idea of a social service robot in the mall and the second the physical robot itself. Especially the results of the "With robot" survey indicates high acceptance of socially engaging service robots in a shopping mall
Hello Pepper, may I tickle you?:Children's and adults' responses to an entertainment robot at a shopping mall
We took a social robot Pepper to a shopping mall for one day to see what kind of initial responses it draws from people. We observed that the robot was quickly surrounded by children when there were others-especially adults-interacting with it. The children seemed to especially enjoy the activity-related applications, such as tickling the robot or giving a high-five. Adults were interested in hearing about useful applications and tended to talk to the robot as if it were any machine capable of speech recognition. These observations will help to design more interactive and entertaining applications for shopping mall robots
A Social Service Robot in a Shopping Mall
Consumers often respond positively to social service robots in retail context but less is known about the expectations and success criteria of the management and retailers for such robots. We have introduced a humanoid social robot (Pepper) in a shopping mall and report the results of a mall management workshop, interviews of eight retailers and a consumer customer workshop. The results show that the stakeholders find important that the robot creates warm and fun atmosphere in the mall as well as provides practical help for the customers and workers
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
