Not AvailableThe present study was conducted to study the effect of 17α-methyl testosterone (17α-MT) on masculinization efficiency through immersion treatment in dwarf gourami,Trichogaster lalius. The immersion treatment of 17αMT at doses of 250, 500, 750 and 1000 μg/l was carried out for 3 h daily on third, fifth and eighth day after
hatching. The highest concentrations of 17α-MT produced the highest percentage of males (84.29%). The progeny testing of males from17α-MT treated groups indicated that the female progenies of each of the males tested differ significantly from that of control, indicating that all those males carried XX genotype. The gonado-somatic index
of the hormone treated fish revealed significant suppression of the ovarian development.Not Availabl
Melatonin improves high temperature stress tolerance by physiological and reproductive stabilization in common bean
Abstract The common bean is an essential legume crop that faces significant productivity threats from high temperature stress (HTS). It negatively impacts physio-biochemical processes, floral organ development, and fertilization, and degrades seed and nutritional quality, leading to yield losses. To alleviate the impact of HTS on common bean genotypes that are tolerant to water deficit stress (WDS), foliar applications (0 and 300 µM) of melatonin (MT), a low-molecular-weight organic compound that acts as both a plant hormone and an antioxidant, was applied at pre and post flowering stage of the crop. Two experiments were conducted to study the efficacy of MT foliar application on common bean genotypes under HTS (I & II) conditions during the late Rabi (post-rainy) season of 2023-24. Foliar application of MT reduced the canopy temperature by 29.1% under HTS-I (29–32 °C) and 7.9% under HTS-II (32–35 °C) and increased the pollen viability by 25.8% and 45.9% under HTS-I and II, respectively. In addition, MT significantly enhanced seed yield, with increases of 11.2% and 34.4% under HTS-I and HTS-II, respectively. MT also increased the micronutrient content of the seeds under HTS. Overall, these results provide a comprehensive understanding of the protective and tolerance effects of MT against HTS, ensuring yield stability in HTS-prone areas
Effect of Nonsteroidal Aromatase Inhibitor on Sex Reversal of Oreochromis mossambicus (Peters, 1852)
In the present study, the efficacy of letrozole, a potent nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitor, and 17a-methyltestosterone on gondal sex differentiation and sex reversal was examined in Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus). Among the doses tried in the experiment, 100 mg letrozole, 200 mg letrozole, and 50 mg 17a-methyltestosterone/kg produced male dominated populations (97-100% males). The combination of 100 mg letrozole+25 mg 17a-methyltestoster/kg yielded 100% males while the combination of 50 mg letrozole+25 mg 17a-methyltestosterone/kg yielded 92% males. The control group consisted of 48.05% males and 51.95% females, close to the normal sex ratio of 1:1. Survival ranged 85.61-94.31% in the treated groups, significantly higher than 73.83% in the control (p<0.05). In general, the letrozole and combination treatments resulted in a slight alteration in the gonadosomatic index of the tilapia. Administration of letrozole alone or in combination with 17a-MT did not adversely affect the proximate composition of the muscle. Results suggest that letrozole and 17a-methyltestosterone have the potential to produce 100% male populations in Mozambique tilapia and that inhibition of aromatase activity influences sex differentiation in Mozambique tilapia
Growth of Research Productivity of the University of Mysore: A Scientometric Study
The present study aims to identify the research productivity of University of Mysore during 1989 to 2018. The study also tried to retrieve the information regarding the total number of citations, h-index, average citation per article of the faculty members of University of Mysore using Web of Science. In order to get the research output of the university, the search terms ‘University of Mysore’ is entered in the search box of the “Web of Science”. The result of the study shows that 4838 records of the University of Mysore have been included in the Web of Science database, out of which, majority 91.28% of the records are research articles. The study identified that among the faculty members of University of Mysore, Rangappa has received highest number of citations (4027), followed by Yathirajan has received 2425 citations. In this context, the study recommends that the faculty members of the both universities need to publish their research articles in peer reviewed journals with high Impact Factor.
A vital sustainable means for community empowerment
Dynamic changes in the present day quality of life and quality of environment are greatly influenced by the space sciences and technology. Notwithstanding the dual use of space technology the irreversible impacts on health, resources and ecology for each abuse of finite resources are alarming. Over two decades of development reviewed by UN Systems during 1970-90s reveal that Participation is the key to Sustainability at Community Levels. Space vision of a stewardship for the present generation to sustain a healthy and safe Space ship are challenging (UNCED.1992). The next two decades after Rio'92 have also provided ample break through Space Education Out Reach activities all over the globe. Few such are Bharath Jana Vigyaan Jatha Indian People Science March ( 1987), Earth Day Network(1972) and Clean Up the World(2000) Campaigns to name a few and thousands of Community Empowerment Models which have started providing the Tunnel Effect as a societal catalyst. Thus, these living through role eco literacy models enrich and add value to the Space Education and Outreach initiatives.. Space Eco Literacy Model (Jagannatha, COSPAR 2012) provides one such simple Space Education Tool for empowering community for sustainable Development. UNESCO/UNEP/IEEP 1977 Tbilisi conference provided historical mandates for nations to embark on formal and informal environmental education. Objectives of Environmental Education for individuals and community as awareness, attitude, knowledge, skills and participation have lived through the Rio Earth Summit-1992.Pro- Active role of nations are vital to address and show case compliance to United Nations mandates. Public outreach activities need to be networked with various diversified activities aimed at space eco-literacy both at Individual and Community Levels. An EESS Ecological Environmental Studies by Students model developed in 1987 is one such Eco education Model which was cited as one of the 20 Best Eco Education Models.(Earth Day Network, 2000).In this presentation, genesis and process of development of EESS, 1987 and Space Eco-literacy, 2011 models in the backdrop of People Science Movement in India with over 35 years is captured from the Space Situational Awareness (SSA) point of view. A community eco literacy drive during 2000-2010 on the banks of Kukkarahally lake, Mysore, India for over 320 Sundays with 4500 man-hours 300 volunteers including all the authors provided the backdrop for Space Eco Literacy Campaign.. Later the effort culminated in to a Sunday Space Eco Literacy model which was developed during April-June 2011 and are discussed.. By performing a weakly non-linear stability analysis, the Nusselt number is obtained as a function of amplitude of convection which is governed by a non-autonomous Ginzburg-Landau equation derived for the stationary mode of convection. The paper succeeds in unifying the modulated Bénard-Darcy, Bénard-Rayleigh, Bénard-Brinkman and Bénard-Chandrasekhar convection problems and hence precludes the study of these individual problems in isolation. This paper introduces a prototype web search results clustering engine that use the random sampling technique with medoids instead of centroids to improve clustering quality, Cluster labeling is achieved by combining intra-cluster and inter-cluster term extraction based on a variant of the information gain measure by using Modified Furthest Point First algorithm. M-FPF is compared against two other established web document clustering algorithms: Suffix Tree Clustering (STC) and Lingo, which are provided by the free open source Carrot2 Document Clustering Workbench. We measure cluster quality by considering precision , recall and relevance. Mechanistic Insight into the Turn-Off Sensing of Nitroaromatic Compounds Employing Functionalized Polyaniline
[EN] Conducting Polymers (CPs), in recent times have contributed significantly in the detection of High Energy Materials possessing nitro functional groups through fluorescence quenching studies. Camphor sulphuric acid doped polyaniline (C-PANI) is studied with a view to obtain easily processable PANI without pi-stacking for the detection of Picric acid(PA) and p-nitro toluene(pNT) in trace levels. The quenching constant and limit of detection were found to be 2.236x10(-6) M and 6.14x10(-7) M for PA and 1.9447x10(-7) M and 3.57x10(-7) M for pNT, respectively showing a very good sensitivity in detection. Resonance Raman spectroscopy (RRS) showed the involvement of the bipolaronic and benzenoid group in the charge transfer complex formed between the conducting polymer and the analyte. The photoluminescence studies indicated a predominant PET mechanism. The electrochemical studies employing cyclic voltammetry gave higher band gap on comparison with absorption studies. The positive and negative shift in oxidation and reduction potential of polymer-analyte was observed and collaborated with the fluorescence studies to understand the possible fluorescence quenching mechanism from electrochemical approach.The authors greatly acknowledge and thank Prof. G. Maternal effects on oocyte quality in farmed Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus L.)
Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) oocyte quality is highly variable and one of the major bottlenecks during fry-production for on-growth in commercial Atlantic halibut
farming. In this study, the effect of maternally derived oocyte constituents (i.e. yolk components and mRNAs) on oocyte quality (i.e fertilisation, embryonic hatching and normal blastomere symmetry) in farmed Atlantic halibut has been investigated.
Atlantic halibut embryos and larvae depend on nutritional yolk components until larval first feeding. The importance of yolk n-3 fatty acids for oocyte quality was confirmed. However, highest positive correlations with oocyte quality were found for the less studied fatty acids
dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (DGLA, 20:3n6) and docosapentaenoic acid (DHA, 20:5n3) that are
known to compete with two of the most abundant fatty acids, arachidonic acid (ARA, 20:4n6)and docosahexaenoic acid (DPA, 22:5n3), respectively during fatty acid metabolism. High methionine and aspartic concentrations, amino acids essential to eukaryotic protein synthesis, were found to influence oocyte quality positively while no significant correlations were found
between oocyte folate concentrations and oocyte quality.
Before activation of zygotic transcription, maternal mRNAs control cell divisions and
embryonic patterning. Due to the limited available genomic information on Atlantic halibut maternal transcripts, an expressed sequence tag (EST) maternal library containing 2,341high quality ESTs was created by suppressive subtractive hybridization (SSH). The maternal
library constitutes an EST pool to identify suitable Atlantic halibut reference genes and
identify differentially expressed maternal genes in high and low quality Atlantic halibut oocytes.
To perform reliable quantification of gene expression by qPCR, stable reference genes have to be used to normalize target gene expression. Tubb2/Actb and Tbb2/Fau were identified as the best two-gene normalization factors during Atlantic halibut embryonic and larval development. Either of these normalization factors can be used for future developmental gene expression studies in Atlantic halibut. Tubb2/Actb was further used as reference gene during this study.
Poor embryonic hatching success was found to not be correlated with a general decrease in
oocyte maternal transcript abundance but with low transcript levels of specific maternal transcripts by qPCR. The majority of genes showed either no or very minor correlations between their transcript levels and oocyte quality parameters (Fertilisation: 13-93 %, embryonic hatching: 1-94 %). However, maternal transcript levels of three genes, most likely involved in nuclear protein and mRNA transport, growth factor regulation, and embryonic patterning, correlated with oocyte quality.
Further, a new Atlantic halibut 4x44k oligonucleotide microarray was constructed and used to identify 192 strictly maternal genes during Atlantic halibut embryonic development and 20 differentially expressed genes between high and low quality oocytes, involved in immune response, metabolism, RNA transcription, protein degradation, cell signalling and the cytoskeleton. Microarray validation confirmed its suitability for future gene expression studies during Atlantic halibut embryonic development.
The identified maternal genes in this study can serve as a pool for future in-depth studies of embryonic gene expression to advance the knowledge of important developmental processes such as germ cell development, growth and immune response in Atlantic halibut. Some of these may serve as possible markers for Atlantic halibut oocyte quality due to their high expression differences between high and low quality oocytes. Future nutritional studies on
Atlantic halibut broodstock should focus on the identified yolk constituents acting positively on oocyte quality
