A Florentine family in crisis: the Strozzi in the fifteenth century.
PhDIn 1434 the Strozzi lineage had held a leading position in
Florentine society and government for at least one hundred and fifty
years, and was one of the largest and wealthiest of the city's
patrician lineages. The records of the catasto of 1427 and of the
scrutiny of 1433 are used to give a profile of the dominant social,
economic and political position of the Strozzi before the advent of
Medicean dominance. Their record of electoral success, and the
political and cultural leadership of influential and respected men
such as Palla di Nofri and Matteo di Simone, with other factors, put
the Strozzi amongst the greatest enemies of the victorious Medicean
regime of late 1434. The effects of political opposition and exile
on the lineage are examined both directly, through records of office-holding,
and indirectly through such indicators as marriage alliances
and household wealth. The two most prominent lines of the Strozzi
were exiled after 1434. Palla di Nofri's life and preoccupations in
his Paduan exile are examined, together with the lives of his sons;
none of these Strozzi ever returned to Florence, pursued as they were
by the enmity of the Medicean regime. The very different careers of
Filippo di Matteo and his brother Lorenzo are also examined: how they
succeeded in founding a lucrative bank in Naples, and in returning to
Florence to 'rebuild' (rifare) the position of the Strozzi lineage
there. The final decades of the century saw the Strozzi in an
economically more secure position, due substantially to the efforts
of Filippo. Except for a very small number of its members admitted
into the regime, most of the lineage is here shown to have remained
excluded from significant political office until after the fall of
the Medici regime in 1494
I periodici educativi a Roma (1922-1943)
This paper, after a short reconstruction of the origins and development of the pedagogical and school periodicals in Rome, from the Breach of Porta Pia to the Giolitti era performs an analytical reconstruction of the "map" of the educational and school periodicals in Rome under the Fascist regime. By taking into account the increase in size and complexity of the educational "Function" in the society of 1920s and 1930s Italy that was becoming a "mass" society in which the media were growing in reach and impact and that was also under a regime that pursued a "totalitarian" education project the author has regarded it necessary to broaden the scope of the analysis going beyond the mere school-pedagogical publications and adding the periodicals of the Fascist youth and students organisations, the magazines for children, teenagers and young people in general and even those periodicals that were not an open emanation of the National Fascist Party and also the "juvenile" magazines, i.e. those "founded and directed by young people", which mainly dealt with issues regarding "youth" and "renovation of culture" but also had educational purposes and aims, albeit dedicated to small elites (which were partly or fully also part of the aforementioned categories)

The author analyses the traditional image of the bridal couple (the unwilling bride, the burning bridegroom) in the humanistic epithalamium in a selection of texts by various poets: Giovanni Pontano, Juan Segundo, Antonio Agustín, Jerónimo Ramírez, Gabriele Altilio, Giovanni Gigli, Manuel da Costa, Callimaco Experiente (Filippo Buonaccorsi) and Martín Ivarra
Testori. Scrittura e figura
The first meeting between La Rivista di Engramma and Giovanni Testori focuses on two typical themes for the journal: writing and figure. Testori. Scrittura e figura is Engramma's portrait dedicated to Testori 100 years after his birth and 30 years after his death. It takes as its reference Willy Varlin's portrait of Testori chosen as the issue's cover. The issue includes a first part centred on Testori's writing: Chiara Pianca in “Quasi fudesse ecce homo de paese” writes an in-depth and detailed essay on the complex drafting of Ambleto. Alongside this, Luca D'Onghia in his article Lettera luterana su Edipus gives a possible identification of the “scarrozzante” king of Thebes. The remainder of the issue is dedicated to art and the figure. Primarily Testori. Figure dell'informe, by Arturo Mazzarella, which links Testori's thought to 20th-century aesthetic philosophy and the notion of formlessness. This is followed by Apostasia della carne. Fatica e liberazione della materia in Giovanni Testori e Francis Bacon, by Filippo Perfetti: a contribution that reveals some traits of Testori's and Bacon's conception of painting, and how pictorial matter is linked to human life and biology. Davide Dall'Ombra, with Nell'anno del libro su Giovanni Testori e Roberto Longhi, talks about the Testori-Longhi relationship through their exchange of letters, an anticipation that introduces his forthcoming publication Con Roberto Longhi. Lettere e scritti. 1951-1990. The section is closed by the republication of a writing by Giovanni Testori (for which we thank the Associazione Giovanni Testori, and in particular Giuseppe Frangi): Grünewald, il trionfo e la bestemmia. In its concluding part, the issue focuses on the theatrical version of “In exitu”. Here we give for the first time an edition of the reduction used by Testori on his novel for the script. Accompanying the text and the reader is Piermario Vescovo, author of a brief Nota, which briefly attempts to indicate the relevance and further possibility of interrogation of the theatrical script. The conversation “In piena luce, in piena ombra” is a dialogue between Franco Branciaroli, the actor for whom the text of "In exitu" was cut, and Piermario Vescovo. Maestro no, incipit and title of the interview conducted by Antonio Ria with Testori, closes (provisionally) this issue through the voice of its protagonist
Symbolic music similarity through a graph-based representation
In this work, a novel representation system for symbolic music is described. The proposed representation system is graph-based and could theoretically represent music both from a horizontal (contrapuntal) and from a vertical (harmonic) point of view, by keeping into account contextual and harmonic information. It could also include relationships between internal variations of motifs and themes. This is achieved by gradually simplifying the melodies and generating layers of reductions that include only the most important notes from a structural and harmonic viewpoint. This representation system has been tested in a music information retrieval task, namely melodic similarity, and compared to another system that performs the same task but does not consider any contextual or harmonic information, showing how the structural information is needed in order to find certain relations between musical pieces. Moreover, a new dataset consisting of more than 5000 leadsheets is presented, with additional meta-musical information taken from different web databases, including author, year of first performance, lyrics, genre and stylistic tags

Translation of dialect and cultural transfer : an analysis of Eduardo De Filippo’s theatre
The thesis sets out to examine cultural transfer from Neapolitan dialect into English, in the
translations of plays by the contemporary Neapolitan playwright Eduardo De Filippo
(1900-1984). It involves a comparative textual analysis of English translations of a
selection of De Filippo’s plays in order to identify the translation strategies employed by
each translator to represent Neapolitan cultural identity. Eduardo De Filippo can be defined
as one of the most prominent contemporary Italian playwrights who employed dialect to
portray characters who trespassed the boundaries of both Neapolitan and Italian society and
to address social issues which were comprehensible to a vast public. In fact, his innovative
contribution resided in the ability to bring vernacular theatre to national and international
level. Thus the objective of the study is to bring to light the universality of De Filippo’s
message albeit the limited linguistic medium and to show how his theatre is represented in
the Anglo-Saxon milieu. The aim of previous critical studies on the matter has been to
focus on the stage representations of De Filippo’s oeuvres, without particular emphasis on
the analysis of the dialect. Drawing on a variety of theatre as well as translational
frameworks (critical work on translation and in particular on theatre translation, the
polysystem theory, the descriptive approach, anthropology, and sociolinguistics) I argue
that dialect theatre represents an autonomous genre, separate from standard Italian theatre,
which needs to be accounted for in translation, and in particular that the domestication of
the language reduces the cultural impact of the original plays. The thesis is the first study to
suggest that lexicological issues reflect the interpretation of the Neapolitan society in the
translated texts and to provide evidence of the appropriation of Neapolitan culture by the
receiving theatrical system through the linguistic choices made in translation

Self-Translation as Problem for Italian-Canadian Authors
There is often the sense of self-betrayal when bilingual authors self-translate their literary works. In this paper in Comparative Literature the author examines the works of Italian-Canadian authors, in particular Maria Ardizzi, Antonio D’Alfonso, Arianna Dagnino, Licia Canton, Filippo Salvatore, Gianna Patriarca and Alexandre Amprimoz, in terms of their practice of self-translation and the problems that they encounter and try to overcome.
