Uncovering quasi-degenerate Kaluza-Klein Electro-Weak gauge bosons with top asymmetries at the LHC
By exploiting the correlation between charge and spin polarisation asymmetries in t-tbar, we show that combining the two observables could identify the presence of quasi-degenerate states in a resonant signal at the LHC. As an example, we investigate experimental signatures emerging in top-antitop final states in the context of a model where the Standard Model Electro-Weak sector is allowed to propagate in large extra--dimensions of TeV-1 size while the colour sector is localised. Assuming current experimental constraints from the 7 and 8 TeV runs and taking into account the estimated top (anti-top) reconstruction efficiencies, we find that the 14 TeV upgraded LHC with the planned integrated luminosity L=100 fb-1 could access these quasi-degenerate multiple resonances and explore for the first time the rich phenomenology in the asymmetry observables. The main outcome would be having measurable quantities, complementary to the usual total and differential cross sections, capable of distinguishing a quasi-degenerate multiply resonant spectrum from a 'standard' single resonance that could present a similar signal in a bump hunt analysis

Non-Evidentialist Epistemology: Introduction and Overview
The aim of this edited collection is to explore non-evidentialist epistemology or non-evidentialism—roughly, the view that evidence is not required in order for a doxastic attitude to have a positive epistemic standing. According to this view, it is possible for belief or acceptance to be epistemically justified, warranted, or rational in the absence of supporting evidence. This initial chapter introduces the topic and the contents of the single contributions
The notion of observable and the moment problem for ∗ -algebras and their GNS representations
We address some usually overlooked issues concerning the use of ∗ -algebras in quantum theory and their physical interpretation. If A is a ∗ -algebra describing a quantum system and ω: A→ C a state, we focus, in particular, on the interpretation of ω(a) as expectation value for an algebraic observable a= a∗∈ A, studying the problem of finding a probability measure reproducing the moments {ω(an)}n∈N. This problem enjoys a close relation with the selfadjointness of the (in general only symmetric) operator πω(a) in the GNS representation of ω and thus it has important consequences for the interpretation of a as an observable. We provide physical examples (also from QFT) where the moment problem for {ω(an)}n∈N does not admit a unique solution. To reduce this ambiguity, we consider the moment problem for the sequences {ωb(an)}n∈N, being b∈ A and ωb(·) : = ω(b∗· b). Letting μωb(a) be a solution of the moment problem for the sequence {ωb(an)}n∈N, we introduce a consistency relation on the family {μωb(a)}b∈A. We prove a 1-1 correspondence between consistent families {μωb(a)}b∈A and positive operator-valued measures (POVM) associated with the symmetric operator πω(a). In particular, there exists a unique consistent family of {μωb(a)}b∈A if and only if πω(a) is maximally symmetric. This result suggests that a better physical understanding of the notion of observable for general ∗ -algebras should be based on POVMs rather than projection-valued measure

Abstract : In this research I intend to conduct a investigation about the process of teaching and learning in the sketching curves practice on the higher education, particularly in the Calculus' discipline. For such task, I seek study the use made of mathematical language in the classroom, taking as case study a students' class of Calculus A discipline, from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (Brazil). In this research, I will use the theoretical tools provided by the Registers of Semiotic Representation's Theory, by Raymond Duval, and the Ontosemiotic Approach, by Juan Dìaz Godino, which attaches to the research a semiotic perspective of mathematical activity. The articulation that I intend to accomplish with these theories seem to provide important information about the mathematical practice performed by students in the classroom and the practice that the academy intends to teach, which provides a means to compare them and so intervene in the process of teaching and learning on the sketch curves practice
Italy-Albania The migrant as a bridge between two homelands: The role of remittances
After eighteen years of mass migration of the Albanian population, primarily to Greece and Italy, a question arises. May migrants become potential agents of socio-economic development in their country of origin? This paper focuses on the role and the importance of remittances and their use in Albania through a survey of 400 Albanian immigrants, legally residing in the Marche and Apulia regions in Italy, conducted in the period May - September 2007. Simultaneously, we carried out family surveys of 200 households that had at least one member working abroad. This survey was conducted in rural and urban areas of the Vlorë region in Albania. We build on the theory of “New Economics of Labour Migration” which considers remittances as the core of migrants’ strategy and a link between the socio-economic context in the country of origin and that in the host country. Our findings show that remittances are related, on the one hand, to the family links in the country of origin (but for relatively small amounts, usually decreasing in time). On the other hand, remittances are strongly related to investments in Albania. There emerges the image of a migrant “suspended between two shores”, who, independently from any future migratory project, would like to maintain links with both Albania and Italy, becoming a factor of Albania’s development thanks to their investments and human and social capital.migration, survey, remittance, investment, development
Problems for Wright's entitlement theory
Crispin Wright’s entitlement theory holds that we have non-evidential justification for accepting propositions of a general type—which Wright calls “cornerstones”—that enables us to acquire justification for believing other propositions—those that we take to be true on the grounds of ordinary evidence. Entitlement theory is meant by Wright to deliver a forceful response to the sceptic who argues that we cannot justify ordinary beliefs. In the following, I initially focus on strategic entitlement, which is one of
the types of entitlement that Wright has described in more detail. Against Wright, I submit that it is dubious that we are strategically entitled to accept cornerstones. For we are strategically entitled to do so only if a longstanding and apparently plausible view about the ultimate epistemic goal—veritic dual goal monism—is false. After this, I focus on entitlement in general. I contend that non-evidential justification for accepting cornerstones in important cases cannot secure evidential justification for believing ordinary propositions. My argument rests on probabilistic regimentation of the so-called “leaching problem.” This criticism potentially strikes all forms of epistemic entitlement introduced by Wright at once, as each of them is supposed to be a type of nonevidential justification
