Individual and job-related determinants of bias in performance appraisal: The case of middle management in health care organizations

    No full text
Background: Accountable care has changed organizational models adopted by health care organizations profoundly and, consequently, the skill set required for doctor-managers who have becomemiddlemanagers and must deal with the operational management of their units. Doctor-managers must carry out clinical tasks as well as tasks related to budgeting, goal setting, and performance evaluation. The performance evaluation bias, defined as the misalignment between a ward unit’s objective performance (as assessed by technical bodies or agencies) and self-assessed performance by the head of the unit, may have serious consequences for individuals and organizations. Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify determinants of performance appraisal bias based on themismatch between self-reported and official performance data. Specifically, we analyzed the role played by managerial behavior, training, engagement, and perceived organizational support at the individual level, as well as the particular unit’s task diversity, complexity, and predictability. Methodology: We collected primary and secondary data referable to a population of ward unit heads in the Italian National Health Service. A linear regression model predicting performance appraisal bias was employed. Findings: High levels of engagement and perceived organizational support were associated with reduced performance appraisal bias, whereas high levels of predictability and task diversity were associated with increased degree of error. Doctor-managers attending training programs in health care management and ward unit task complexity did not affect bias significantly

    Le strutture ricettive

    No full text

Adenocarcinoma of apocrine sweat glands in a mouflon (Ovis musimon).

A free-living mouflon (Ovis musimon) was presented with a mass on the left shoulder. At necropsy, multifocal, slightly protruding whitish spots were noted on the kidneys, and several lymph nodes were abnormal. Histologically, the mass was composed of epithelial cells arranged in tubular and tubulopapillary structures. The cytoplasm of the epithelial cells had numerous periodic acid-Schiff-positive and diastase-resistant granules. Ultrastructurally, the cytoplasm of the neoplastic cells contained numerous pleomorphic secretory granules and microvilli, which partially covered the luminal surface of the tumor cells. Metastatic foci were present in prescapular and mediastinal lymph nodes and kidneys. On the basis of histological and ultrastructural findings, this tumor was diagnosed as a tubulopapillary adenocarcinoma, arising from apocrine sweat glands of the skin

Parks and territory. New perspective in planning and organization

    No full text
Park planning not only refers to parks. In most cases, an extended territorial context influences and is influenced by policies connected to the planning and management organization of protected areas. If the park requires a territorial context to work its way out of claustrophobic, "island" visions, the territory itself has much to learn from the successes and failures of policies governing protected areas. This volume also responds to the wide debate that developed on this theme at the international seminar "Italian protected areas reaching the 2100 vision: strategies and actions. New organizational and planning perspectives", organized in Visso in November 2009 (University of Camerino, University of Macerata and University of Sassari). The meeting included the participation of the US National Park Service, the largest and oldest organization dedicated to the planning and management of national parks. In the first part of the book, we investigate the separation from urban planning and territorial policies that has traditionally characterized policies for parks and protected areas. We highlight: the connections between natural and cultural resources; the integration or separation between parks and cities; and the role of the landscape in planning interpretations of relationships between the parks and the territory. From the methodological point of view, park planning requires measurement with other bodies of knowledge such as ecology, geology, economics, and the closer examination of some crucial problems in the current debate on conservation/transformation, such as relationships between local and global interests, natural and cultural values, property and environmental rights, evaluation and planning, and rules and cooperation. Some case studies looking at a landscape interpretation of areas of environmental prestige in the Carpathians and eastern Alps provide the first indications in defining a model of sustainable mobility in the fruition of tourism in mountain areas (international research project SEE - "Access2Mountain"). In the second part of the book, topics regarding the organization and management of protected areas are examined, along with their relationship to the performance of the protected areas and with global perspectives of sustainable, or even responsible, socio-economic development
