The effects of performance measurement system uses on organizational ambidexterity and firm performance
Purpose
This study aims to investigate how dynamic tensions between performance measurement system (PMS) uses enable organizations to achieve both exploitation and exploration and enhance firm performance.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors collected survey data on 153 Italian companies. Scales for each construct were validated through an exploratory factor analysis. Data on firm performance were cross-validated by using lagged accounting data. The authors tested our hypotheses using hierarchical ordinary least squares regressions, together with bootstrapping procedures for the test on mediation.
Findings
A diagnostic use of PMS has a positive association with both exploitation – e.g. reductions in total costs and lead times – and exploration, e.g. introduction of new products and extension of product ranges. The dynamic tension created by a joint diagnostic and interactive use has the strongest association with organizational ambidexterity, measured as the multiplicative interaction between exploration and exploitation.
Practical implications
If an organization or business unit is mainly pursuing exploitative goals, a mainly diagnostic use of PMS would be most suitable. If goals are both exploitative and explorative, a mix of diagnostic and interactive uses would be most effective.
Originality/value
This research helps reconcile conflicting views in the literature. The diagnostic use of PMS, far from acting as a “negative force,” appears to be necessary to guide opportunity search and to establish an appropriate scope for exploration-related activities. The authors’ focus on the uses of PMSs shows that ambidexterity is achieved through managerial capability, rather than just through the introduction of systems and structures
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STRATEGY, KPIs AND COMPANY PERFORMANCE
Many organisations have introduced Performance Measurement Systems (PMS) with the aim of gathering data that could help them implement their strategies, achieve their key strategic goals, and align management practises. Empirical research conducted in the field of Performance Measurement (PM) has also demonstrated that an increasing number of organisations have been using performance indicators that are not exclusively financial (Kaplan & Norton, 1992; Said, HassabElnaby & Wier, 2003). In management research, increasing emphasis has been put on the use of a balanced (e.g. financial and non-financial) set of performance indicators (Ittner & Larcker, 2003; Ittner, Larcker, & Randall, 2003; Said, HassabElnaby, & Wier, 2003), and proponents of the Balanced Scorecard (Kaplan & Norton, 1992) frequently described non-financial indicators as measures that relate to the customer, internal processes, and learning and growth performance areas.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Performance measurement within a highly diversified group of companies
This paper presents an in-depth study conducted in a highly diversified group of companies, which has grown significantly in the last few years through the creation or acquisition of a number of firms. This dramatic expansion has required greater coordination, development of common strategies, and identification of synergies across the group. However, efforts were directed mainly towards the development of a shared information system, rather than a cohesive strategy executed through a comprehensive performance measurement system. This paper looks at the issues the group has faced and will be facing particularly from a performance management perspective. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods.
