SCORES ON READING, MATHEMATICS AND ENGLISH PLACEMENT TESTS AS PREDICTORS OF FRESHMAN ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AT SELECTED MARYLAND POSTSECONDARY INSTITUTIONS (REGRESSION ANALYSIS, MULTIPLE, COLLEGE, CORRELATION STUDY)

    No full text
The purpose of this study was to determine the relative influence of six variables (overall high school grade-point average, Scholastic Aptitude Test verbal and mathematics scores, and scores on reading, mathematics and English placement tests) individually and in combination, in predicting the academic achievement of freshmen at selected Maryland postsecondary institutions. Inferences were drawn from the findings of this study regarding the feasibility of using placement test scores as indicators of students' academic achievement. The analysis sample for the study consisted of 1,307 first-time, full-time freshmen who entered one of the five state colleges and universities in Maryland in the fall semester of 1980, 1981, or 1982. The method of research used was ex post facto predicting measurements of academic achievement from students' high school grade-point averages and standardized test scores. Stepwise regression analysis was used to measure six predictor variables against the criterion, first-year college grade-point average.Study findings indicated freshman student academic achievement for the study sample students can be predicted to .42 by using the high school grade-point average, Scholastic Aptitude Test scores and placement test results. These variables correlated positively with first-year college grade-point average. Combination of two or more variables increased the accuracy of predicting college achievement beyond that obtained by any single variable (.32). A prediction equation was determined for each institution and for the five study institutions in aggregate.High school grade-point average was found to be the single most important variable in prediction of first-year college grade-point average for study sample students. The combination of high school grade-point average, Scholastic Aptitude Test-Mathematics score along with Test of Standard Written English score strengthens such prediction by .10 to a total multiple correlation of .42. The Nelson-Denny Reading Test and the California Achievement Test in Mathematics were ineffective predictors of college academic achievement for study sample students at each institution and at the sample institutions in aggregate. Therefore, the investigator questions continued use of these two tests for placement of freshman students in courses at selected postsecondary institutions in Maryland.Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 46-09, Section: A, page: 2492.Educat.D. This book is devoted comes Marcellinus and his "Chronicle". Dating from the first half of the sixth century, the “Chronicle” of Comes Marcellinus, covering the period from 379 to 534 and supplemented by an anonymous author after 548, is undoubtedly an important work for scholars dealing with the history of early Byzantium. Although Marcellin wrote his "Chronicle" in Constantinople, in a primarily Greek environment, he wrote it in Latin, his mother tongue. However, despite writing in Latin, he focused his narrative around the affairs of the eastern part of the Roman Empire and looked at the world largely through the lens of a resident of the City, and he can certainly be considered a Constantinopolitan writer. The book is divided into three main parts. The first one (entitled “Author”) is devoted to Comes Marcellinus himself. Part two of the book (“Chronicle”) is devoted to the "Chronicle" of Marcellinus. In its initial part it presents information concerning, among other things, the principles of its composition, sources and main themes. The second part is a comprehensively commented translation of the “Chronicle” into Polish, preceded by the Latin text. The third part of the book (“Continuation of Marcellin Komes\u27 Chronicle”) is devoted to the anonymous continuation of the “Chronicle” of Marcellinus, which covers the period from 534 to 548.Książka poświęcona jest komesowi Marcellinowi i jego „Kronice”. W jej pierwszej partii przedstawione zostały informacje dotyczące m.in. zasad jej kompozycji, źródeł czy głównych tematów.

Using Lactate as a Measure of Developmental Metabolism in Drosophila melanogaster

    No full text
abstract: Lactate is a commonly known biochemical that is usually produced under anaerobic conditions. This makes it a useful marker for examining the possibility that Drosophila melanogaster undergoes natural hypoxic states during development due to the rate of growth. To analyze this observation and its potential for explaining developmental changes, a lactate assay was used to quantify lactate produced across time points in the third larval instar and across early adulthood. Lactate assay results showed near-zero lactate levels for both larvae and adults. There were confounding factors present in larval lactate assays which made analysis difficult. However, the results of the adult lactate assays seem to indicate an inability to produce large amounts of lactate regardless of time point in adulthood, suggesting that adults do not naturally experience hypoxia during or after eclosion. The transmission of classical and patristic texts in late Anglo-Saxon and early Norman England

    No full text
This thesis consists of a general introduction to the historical and palaeographical background to the subject of the transmission of Classical and Patristic texts in late Anglo-Saxon and early Norman England, followed by five chapters each dealing with a classical or patristic author. Each chapter lists the information we have available on manuscripts containing the author's work, and conclusions are drawn as to the transmission of that work. In the case of five texts, Persius, Satirae; Augustine, Enchiridion; Gregory, Cura pastoralis and Moralia and Isidore, Synonymar portions of each MS are taken and compared in detail with each other and with the modern printed edition, and a stemma is constructed on the basis of evidence thus obtained. A conclusion draws together the information on the transmission of such manuscripts throughout the eighth to twelfth centuries. There are two appendices: the first contains brief notes on texts by Classical and Patristic authors of which there are not enough copies to form stemmata, while the second takes the form of a short analysis of the use of the letter k in the margins of some insular MSS studied. There are also indices nominum et manuscriptorum. The work is divided into two volumes after Chapter Three

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the role that magic plays in the works of the Roman historians and biographers, based on the three selected writers: Tacitus, Suetonius and Ammianus Marcellinus. A chapter is devoted to every one of them, with a separate introduction and conclusions. The method used to study the works of these authors is the so-called close reading, with a particular emphasis put on the vocabulary and the structure of the text. Equally important are the allusions and the intertextuality, which allow for a significantly deeper understanding of the vision and aims of a given author. Though the thesis concentrates on literary studies, I do not abstain from referencing the thoughts of specialists in the religious scholarship, which allow me to better interpret the vocabulary of the examined works. Magic, as I believe, cannot be studied in separation from religion, as understanding the analyzed texts requires placing them in the context of Roman religious norms and the religious innovation of the emperors. The first chapter is devoted to two works of Tacitus, the Histories and the Annals. In a short introduction I summarize the history of studies on religion and magic in Tacitus, which I follow up with my own theory that there exists a connection between the choice of Venus and Apollo as tutelary deities of the Julio-Claudian dynasty and the importance of magic, as well as widely understood divination, under the rule of the Julio-Claudian emperors, as depicted by Tacitus. Though the fragmentary state of preservation of the Histories makes the full analysis of the text impossible, I think that the book establishes a paradigm later used in the Annals. Vespasian, just as Augustus, selects as his patron the god of medicine in order to "heal" the empire after the year of the four emperors, similarly to how Augustus "healed" it after the civil wars. The language of ritual pollution and healing, reflecting the imperial propaganda, is used in the Histories to depict the catastrophic condition of the state after Nero's reign and the salutary influence of the Flavians on the "sick" body of the empire. Yet the usage of the term devotio shows that the healing could be accomplished only through human sacrifice, i.e. the spillage of Roman blood. I analyze also in detail the magical vocabulary connected with Venus (such as venena, blandimenta, the words of binding) and, to a lesser extent, Apollo (the opposition remedium-venenum, carmen), focusing on their use in the description of the emperors and the imperial opposition. Apart from these detailed vocabulary studies, encompassing both Histories and Annals, I concentrate on the picture of the individual emperors, devoting to every one of them a separate subchapter. I argue that the Tacitean portrayal of magic under the reign of the individual rulers mirrors their own character and habits. For example, Nero's fascination with poetry (carmina) is reflected in the frequency of accusations based on the use of carmina in the trials for crimen laesae maiestatis. The detailed analysis of the Tacitean corpus presented in this chapter is too voluminous to be easily summarized here. The chapter is complemented by three appendices, providing the analysis of the structure of the trials under Tiberius, Claudius and Nero and their connection with magic. The second chapter is devoted to Suetonius' Lives of the Caesars. I concentrate here primarily on the structural analysis of the biographies, in which two elements play a crucial role: the presence of "categories" which define an emperor-magician (venena, the colour purple, "spellbinding mimesis", "the lover of the impossible", human sacrifice, superstitio, some supernatural abilities, a return to life after the death), as well as the ring structure. Apart from these elements an important role is played by intertextuality of Suetonius and his self-allusiveness within the Lives themselves. Another important factor is the role of the tutelary deities assumed by the individual emperors, who form a "mirror" for their protégés: e.g. I explore the connections between Isis and Jove in the biography of Caligula, which are of paramount importance to the interpretation of the text. The chapter is divided into a series of subchapters, each devoted to an individual Life. The third chapter is devoted to the Res Gestae of Ammianus Marcellinus. I point out certain lexical similarities which seem to allude to the magical vocabulary of Tacitus. Yet the main focus of my research does not rest so much on the vocabulary stratum as on the structure of Ammianus' oeuvre. I argue that the author uses well-defined paradigms in his description of the oppressors of magic and the trials for magic, employing them consistently throughout his work. I also analyze the partially positive picture of the healing magic-theurgy in the portrayal of Julian the Apostate, as well as the negative portraits of the Christian emperors. I concentrate primarily on analyzing the portrayals of the individual emperors, though I try to show not only how they are presented as emperors-magicians and persecutors of magic, but also as the victims of magical practices. Magic seems to constitute an important element of the narrative on the power struggle and imperial opposition. The research on the vocabulary and structure of the works of Tacitus, Suetonius and Ammianus allows me to prove how fundamental a role in their narratives is played by the contrast between religion and superstitio, tradition and religious innovation
