Tools which simulate the evolution of the uni-parental elements of the human genome
Several simulators have been recently developed in the field of evolutionary genetics which make it possible to test empirical data under hypotheses of genetic variation generated by evolutionary causes. In the perspectives opened in the post-genomic era, they need to meet the growing demand for flexible and computationally efficient algorithms capable of managing genome-wide population datasets. Backward and forward-in-time strategies are available when attempting to better understand the complexity of the evolutionary scenarios actually followed by real populations. However, both strategies have a number of pros and cons. Although non recombinant uni-parentally inherited (NRUP) haplotypes, as the variants of the mitochondrial genome and the majority of Y chromosome polymorphisms, have been an invaluable source of genetic information during the last two decades of molecular anthropological research, few dedicated programs have been designed to model their evolution. The present paper is a brief comparative and annotated overview of the simulation tools developed in the field of population genetics which can be applied to large NRUP data in order to test complex hypotheses concerning genetic variation from a human evolutionary perspective

Clinical Nutrition: inadequate teaching in medical school
Background and Aim: The teaching of Clinical Nutrition (CN) is frequently neglected in Medical Schools, though many official institutions strongly recommend its incorporation in their curricula. This work aimed to assess CN knowledge among final-year medical students and final-year dietology diploma students.
Methods and Results: We compared the performances of final-year Medical School students who did and who did not take the CN course and final-yens dietology students in a computer-based multiple choice question examination related to core CN competencies that primary-care physicians and dieticians should know and be able to put into practice. The medical students who did nor take the CN course correctly answered significantly fewer questions compared with those who did and the dietology students (both p < 0.001). There was also a difference in the percentages of who passed the test: students who did not take the course: those 18%; those who did: 77%; dietology students: 76% (p < 0.001).
Conclusions: There are numerous barriers to the incorporation of nutrition in Medical School curricula. The medical school students may have achieved poorer results because dietology students followed nutrition education programs Eater in their curriculum. Our Medical School has therefore included CN education as part of its internal medicine course since 1998. (C) 2001, Medical Press
Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring in evaluating the relationship between obesity and blood pressure
Abstract
The relationship of body mass index, body fat, waist to hip ratio, fasting blood glucose and sum of blood glucose levels during oral glucose tolerance test with casual blood pressure (BP) and BP parameters obtained by 24h ambulatory BP monitoring in 97 out-patients moderately obese (66 with android type obesity), normal glucose tolerance and mild hypertension at entry study, has been evaluated. A negative correlation between body mass index and systolic ambulatory BP levels as the 24h mean, daytime and nighttime, has been documented in all of the obese subjects; no correlations between body mass index and casual BP were shown. Only in the group of android type obese was the body mass index correlated positively with the casual DBP. Systolic 24h and nighttime BP values correlated positively with waist to hip ratio; the correlation coefficients improved in the subgroup of android type obese. By using 24h ambulatory BP monitoring, it may be possible to show that waist to hip ratio is a better predictor of systolic hypertension than other parameters such as those derived from weight and height measurements and body fat percentage
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Evaluation of learning progress in internal medicine using computer-aided clinical case simulation
-Abstract
Internal Medicine lessons were integrated with simulation of clinical cases (Socrates program). The subsequent evaluation of 188 students was conducted with the Procustes program (Computer-Aided Assessment of Patient Problem: CAAPP). An increase in the number of training hours with the Socrates program results in improved examination performance. The data suggest that teaching with a learning program based on simulation of a clinical problem or cases may be a useful tool to integrate with traditional lessons. In addition, assessment with the Procustes program may support the appraisal of clinical knowledge and competence
