Pedigree error due to extra-pair reproduction substantially biases estimates of inbreeding depression
Understanding the evolutionary dynamics of inbreeding and inbreeding depression requires unbiased estimation of inbreeding depression across diverse mating systems. However, studies estimating inbreeding depression often measure inbreeding with error, for example, based on pedigree data derived from observed parental behavior that ignore paternity error stemming from multiple mating. Such paternity error causes error in estimated coefficients of inbreeding (f) and reproductive success and could bias estimates of inbreeding depression. We used complete “apparent” pedigree data compiled from observed parental behavior and analogous “actual” pedigree data comprising genetic parentage to quantify effects of paternity error stemming from extra-pair reproduction on estimates off, reproductive success, and inbreeding depression in free-living song sparrows (Melospiza melodia). Paternity error caused widespread error in estimates offand male reproductive success, causing inbreeding depression in male and female annual and lifetime reproductive success and juvenile male survival to be substantially underestimated. Conversely, inbreeding depression in adult male survival tended to be overestimated when paternity error was ignored. Pedigree error stemming from extra-pair reproduction therefore caused substantial and divergent bias in estimates of inbreeding depression that could bias tests of evolutionary theories regarding inbreeding and inbreeding depression and their links to variation in mating system
“Revenge is never a straight Line:” Whitewashing Blackness, Blaxploitation and the Development of White Imagery in Tarantino’s Django Unchained
Despite its release dates back to 2012, Tarantino’s Django Unchained remains one of the most visual and memorable cinematic representations of slavery in American cinema. The film’s release inaugurated a long narrative cycle in Hollywood of bold portrayals of slavery on the big screen. However, Tarantino’s revisionist depiction of chattel slavery has generated a debate that is still open about the trouble for a white filmmaker to “revise” one of the darkest pages of American history infusing it with outlandish humor. The essay undertakes an analysis of how, beneath Django Unchained’s apparent depiction of black empowerment, Tarantino constructs an interplay between slave heroism and revenge, developing a form of “blaxploitation” through “white” revenge fantasies. In so doing, Tarantino creates a cinematic circularity that departs from the Spaghetti Western genre, develops the image of a black hero, ultimately creating a cinematic circularity that culminates in an aesthetic representation of vengeance that reclaims the memory of slavery and uses African American cultural history as a cinematic tool to offer a white perspective on chattel slavery. As such, the ultimate aim of this contribution is to shed light on how Tarantino’s whitewashes slave rebellion
"Connessioni Narrative.
Telegraphic Literature, Artificial Subjectivity and the Challenges to Communication Technology in Ella Cheever Thayer’s Wired Love (1889)
American literature at the turn of the 20th century has always been responsive to progress through the recurrent trope of men and machines. Narratives on female subjectivity became quite popular as well. However, the literary production on the usage of technology and the construction of a “wired self” has received quite little attention. The objective of this study is twofold. First, to look at the complex alteration of identity through one of the first examples of communication technologies, the Telegraph, in Ella Cheever Thayer’s autofictional novel Wired Love: A Romance of Dots and Dashes (1889). Second, is to illustrate female subjectivity through an extremely topical narrative that anticipates the problematic relationship between women and machines in American literature. Through the lens of literature, the researcher will investigate the roots of one of the first means of communication and its ability to change the way in which women began to communicate with bodies and machines in the Nineteenth Century, thus challenging the concept of personal identity anticipating the age of computer networks and digitalization. This analysis will narrow down the scope onto the projection of the female Self through the ability of technology to challenge the traditional notion of a bounded individual. In this way, we will discuss how Thayer’s narrative offers an example of technology and the public self in a “performance of identity” torn between reality and virtuality. Thayer’s (unfortunately) little-known novel, Wired Love, can be considered as an example of autofiction, which portrays one of the first problematic challenges of identity through technology at the dawn of the 1900s. Telegraphist and then novelist, Ella Cheever Thayer used her own story as a telegraph operator to illustrate the challenges of communication in a romantic love affair between two telegraph operators who mistakenly intercept each other over the wire and start exchanging messages as modern online dating. In a twist of ambiguities, through “identity mixups”, the novel offers a first literary example of the complex dynamics between identity and technology
The Flâneur and Post-9/11 Literature: Texturing 9/11 through Urban Walking in Contemporary American Fiction
In the wake of September 11, 2001, New York City and the collective consciousness were profoundly transformed. The Flâneur and Post-9/11 Literature explores how contemporary American fiction represents this altered landscape through characters whose wanderings recall the flâneur. While not flâneurs in the nineteenth-century sense, these protagonists use urban wandering as a narrative strategy to negotiate trauma, memory, and the reconfiguration of urban space. Focusing on novels by Teju Cole, Colson Whitehead, Jonathan Safran Foer, Don DeLillo, and Amy Waldman, the book shows how urban wandering—a recurrent motif in post-9/11 fiction—becomes a morally, emotionally, and politically charged practice. Linking flânerie to the spatial and symbolic transformations of New York City, the study examines how streets and the haunting voids of Ground Zero structure narrative and shape collective memory. Tracing intersections of bodies, streets, and stories, the book illuminates how literature bears witness to trauma and reshapes urban experience
From Prose to Picture: Critical Reflections on the Road and the Journey in John Steinbeck’s and John Ford’s The Grapes of Wrath
Since its release in 1940, John Ford’s adaptation of John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath has sustained significant popular interest. However, the film adaptation has been more frequently analyzed for its thematic content than appreciated for its visual aesthetics, likely due to its connection with Ford’s established cinematic legacy and its alignment with the broader corpus of works addressing the socio-economic struggles of Depression-era America. The aim of this article is to critically examine the visual significance of the road and the archetypal myth of the highway in Ford’s interpretation of The Grapes of Wrath. The analysis begins by exploring the theme of the journey as represented in Steinbeck’s novel, and then narrowing the focus to the portrayal of this motif in Ford’s cinematic adaptation. Within the literary text, the journey serves as a metaphor for dispossession, whereas in the film, the motifs of the “road” and “travel” substantiate the film’s alignment with the road movie genre. Ultimately, this article argues that Steinbeck’s novel was instrumental in shaping Hollywood’s enduring fascination with the journey and the road, themes which would later be re-elaborated in the road movie, a cinematic reworking of the road narrative
