Using the emotion of art to build cohesion, collaboration and empathy between student nurses
Art therapy is used as a tool for personal growth and greater self-understanding. Art enhances communication between individuals, groups and professional teams and is an effective tool to explore change.
In 2006, I developed and coordinated a third year Bachelor of Nursing unit on Maternal and Newborn Health Care. The first cohort of the Bachelor of Nursing students was entering their final year. Being a small group, having shared two years together, one would have thought that they would be supportive and cohesive. However to the contrary, the group was fragmented, insular and remote, with little demonstration of compassion or empathy for one another. Knowing that the ability to communicate and collaborate is essential to working well within the interdisciplinary health team, the group needed to evolve from being distant individuals with a student mindset to a model of engagement.
The project describes the changes in the dynamics of the group and personal growth of the students as a result of using art therapy as an assessable component in the unit. The students were required to develop an artwork, which reflected their interpretations, emotions and feelings about the process of pregnancy, childbirth and parenting. Not only did the activity develop an overwhelming change of individual appreciation for one another, but the marked change in their attitudes and development toward professional accountability was noted by lecturers and unit coordinators who taught the students in their following and final semester

The Irish plays of James Shirley, 1636-1640
Although he was a prominent and influential playwright during his theatrical career,
the work of James Shirley (1596-1666) has been neglected since Dryden's description
of him in 'MacFlecknoe' as a mere 'type...of tautology'. Shirley holds a unique place
amongst Caroline dramatists as, at the height of his career, he left London to become
resident playwright of the first purpose-built theatre in Ireland, the Werburgh Street
Theatre. This seminal event has received fairly little attention from scholars, and the
plays of this Irish period (The Royal Master, The Doubtful Heir, The Gentleman of
Venice, The Politician and St. Patrick for Ireland) have not previously been examined
as a whole.
This thesis examines Shirley's Irish period in its entirety, from the
circumstances surrounding his move to Dublin in 1636, through an exploration of his
relationship with the Werburgh Street Theatre and what influenced his Irish plays, to
the factors which resulted in his return to England in 1640. The thesis historicises the
production of these plays in their socio-political context. The chapters
(chronologically arranged by play) provide close textual studies and contextual
material relating the texts to their patrons, performance spaces, audiences, print history
and Irish politics. This research reveals that during this four year period, Shirley
gradually adapted his writing style in a targeted attempt to appeal to the tastes of the
Dublin audience. Shirley managed the theatre with John Ogilby, who was appointed
Master of the Revels in Ireland by Lord Deputy Wentworth. An analysis of the
relationship between these three key figures has contributed to a comprehensive
picture of the socio-political conditions of Shirley‘s writing. Through the investigation
of Shirley's work and professional position during this time, this thesis builds on
recent critical recovery work (including that by Hadfield/Maley, Rankin, Dutton) on
the literary-political circumstances of Stuart Ireland
The clergy of the deaneries of Rochester and mailing in the diocese of Rochester, c. 1770 – 1870
This is a study of the concerns and life - style of the clergy of the established Church in two Kent Deaneries throughout the hundred year period, 1770 -1870. How far, it is considered, were episcopal hopes, which were expressed in the Charges of Bishop and Archdeacon, fulfilled in the parishes, especially in the matters of residence and education. The extent of non-residence is deduced from. such evidence as is available for the earlier part of the period and after 1830 from Visitation and other returns. The provision of Sunday Schools is used as an example of clerical response to a diocesan policy in the field of education. The exercise of patronage, residence, plurality, the length ofincumbencies, the employment of curates and their prospects, are looked at throughout the period. The provision of new churches, agrarian unrest, tithe and clerical emoluments, church rate, relationship with dissent, worship provision , the visitation process, the clergyman's role in society, the differing demands of town ministry and rural ministry are examined as events bring them to the fore . The priorities of successive bishops are noted and the lives of sample clergymen are taken for each period, both to flesh-out the statistics and to illustrate the evolving pattern of ministry
Invited review: Qualitative research in dairy science: A narrative review
The use of qualitative research in dairy science has increased considerably in recent years, providing the opportunity to inform research and practice. This review aims to enhance the accessibility of qualitative research among a range of audiences and specifically: (1) provide an overview of what qualitative research is and the value it can bring to scientific inquiries in the dairy context, (2) illustrate the emergence of qualitative dairy science research in the past 15 to 20 years, (3) outline the role of the researcher and key philosophical assumptions underlying qualitative research, (4) describe qualitative research approaches and methods used in dairy science research, and (5) highlight key aspects of qualitative inquiry used to ensure research trustworthiness. Qualitative approaches in dairy science enable researchers to understand myriad topics including stakeholder relationships, decision-making, and behaviors regarding dairy cattle management, animal welfare, and disease prevention and control measures. Approaches that were used often for qualitative data collection were individual interviews and focus groups, and variations of thematic analysis were common analytical frameworks. To assess public values, attitudes, and perceptions, mixed methods questionnaires that combined quantitative data with qualitative data from open-ended questions were used regularly. Although still used infrequently, action research and participatory approaches have the potential to bridge the research-implementation gap by facilitating group-based learning and on-farm changes. Some publications described the philosophical assumptions inherent to qualitative research, and many authors included reflexivity and positionality statements. Although a comprehensive description of strategies to meet trustworthiness criteria for qualitative research was uncommon, many publications mentioned certain aspects of trustworthiness, such as member checking, researcher triangulation, and the recording of reflexive notes. Qualitative research has been used to deepen our understanding of phenomena relevant to the dairy sector and has opened the door for a broad array of new opportunities. In addition to having merit on its own, qualitative research can guide, inform, and expand on quantitative research, and an understanding of the core pillars of qualitative research can foster interdisciplinary collaborations
The English translation of seventeenth-century French lyric poetry and epigrams during the Caroline period
This doctoral thesis is the first comprehensive study of contemporary English translations of French lyric poetry during the Caroline period. While there has been extensive study of translations from French literature of other genres, notably drama, translations of lyric poetry have been largely ignored. The thesis examines the translations within the context of literary and cultural trends in France and England during the seventeenth century. Differing cultural tendencies and reader expectations are evident both in the selection of particular poems for translation, and in the changes translators made to their source texts. Chapter one contains background information on the social and literary relations between France and England during the seventeenth century, and an overview of the social and political conditions in which poetry was written in each country. Chapter two investigates where and how translators obtained the texts of the poems they translated, and in particular the use of the recueils collectifs as sources for translations. Chapters three, four and five provide a thematic overview of the most significant and interesting translations. The themes chosen - eroticism, love and nature - constitute those most popular with translators, and the representation of these themes in both the original poems and the translations is closely connected to wider literary and cultural tendencies in both France and England. Having provided a thematic overview of the translations, chapters 6 and 7 examine some of the more technical and linguistic aspects of the practice of translating from contemporary French poetry in Caroline England. Chapter seven studies the translation of the French lyric voice, and the effects of this on the representation of themes, particularly love and nature. Chapter eight examines the English treatment of some aspects of seventeenth-century French prosody, placing these and the changes made by translators in the context of prosodic developments in both France and England. The conclusion highlights patterns identified in translators' handling of the source texts; these draw attention to the literary and cultural differences between France and England in the seventeenth century, and demonstrate that French poetry is altered in English translation to suit the tastes of translators and their intended English readership
