Changing competitiveness in the global markets has created new challenges for business organizations. To cope with this changing environment human resource management (HRM) practices are expected to play a more vital role in firm performance. Human resource or people are diversified from the viewpoint of likes and dislikes, emotions, feelings, values, personalities and qualifications as well. The subject matter of human resource management (HRM) is dealing with people. Until and unless an organization don’t have efficient and talent human resource they cannot build a good workforce team for achieving professionally the organizational goal. Without productivity improvement no organization can flourish and survive in the long run. For this reason HRM as a separate matter of study has been gaining popularity and this study explored HRM practices of Robi Axiata Limited a cellular mobile phone multinational company operating in Bangladesh. This study has not covered all HRM activities of Robi but some selected major HRM functions has been explored. These major HRM activities are human resource planning (HRP), recruitment and selection, training and development, motivation and leadership, performance appraisal, compensation, job satisfaction and promotion. This is a descriptive type of study and primary data have been collected designing a Likert Scale questionnaire. It is found after data analyses that for formulating effective HRP Robi’s uses trend analysis and individual departmental manpower requisition. Robi also has qualified authority to make selection process successful and for taking effective projected future manpower decision. The company has been arranging proper training program continuously. Moreover, the company should slightly improve its motivation and leadership styles and also to be increased employee basic salary

Effects of Mass and Damping on Flow-Induced Vibration of a Cylinder Interacting with the Wake of Another Cylinder at High Reduced Velocities

    No full text
Flow-induced vibration is a canonical issue in various engineering fields, leading to fatigue or immediate damage to structures. This paper numerically investigates flow-induced vibrations of a cylinder interacting with the wake of another cylinder at a Reynolds number Re = 150. It sheds light on the effects of mass ratio m*, damping ratio, and mass-damping ratio m*ζ on vibration amplitude ratio A/D at different reduced velocities Ur and cylinder spacing ratios L/D = 1.5 and 3.0. A couple of interesting observations are made. The m* has a greater influence on A/D than ζ although both m* and ζ cause reductions in A/D. The m* effect on A/D is strong for m* = 2–16 but weak for m* > 16. As opposed to a single isolated cylinder case, the mass-damping m*ζ is not found to be a unique parameter for a cylinder oscillating in a wake. The vortices in the wake decay rapidly at small ζ. Alternate reattachment of the gap shear layers on the wake cylinder fuels the vibration of the wake cylinder for L/D = 1.5 while the impingement and switch of the gap vortices do the same for L/D = 3.0

Gamification's Design in Promoting Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Education

In recent years, the concept of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) has grown significantly, with the COVID-19 pandemic highlighting the need for more effective measures. The pandemic has highlighted the urgent need for more targeted and efficient EDI measures, revealing disparities in marginalized communities. These disparities emphasize the need for specific and efficient EDI actions by highlighting the widespread impacts of discrimination based on ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic status. To address these issues, we designed a game-like prototype aimed at facilitating EDI education through the use of gamification and experience-based learning. The prototype consists of nine interfaces designed to interact seamlessly, and motivational affordances such as instant feedback, progress bars, and storytelling were integrated into the prototype to enhance the learning experience and engagement. Three experts conducted a heuristic evaluation, and the results showed that the prototype was usable. While minor and major issues were identified, the absence of catastrophic problems underscores the overall effectiveness of the program. Moving forward, further development of the prototype into a fully functional application holds promise for addressing usability concerns and enhancing its capacity to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in educational settings

Promotion of scientific literacy in Bangladesh: teachers' perspectives, practices and challenges

    No full text
In line with a current global trend, junior secondary science education in Bangladesh aims to provide science education for all students to enable them to use their science learning in everyday life. This aim is consistent with the call for scientific literacy, which argues for engaging students with science in everyday life. The study for this thesis explores how scientific literacy is promoted through junior secondary science education in Bangladesh. It looks at four areas: teachers’ perspectives of scientific literacy; the translation of their perspectives into teaching practices; the values they consider in science teaching in relation to scientific literacy, and the issues they perceive as challenging in their teaching for promoting scientific literacy. To explore these four areas, this research followed a mixed methods design where qualitative approaches, including interviews with teachers, lesson observations and focus group interviews with students, dominated the overall research process. This study reveals that whilst participating teachers held a range of perspectives of scientific literacy, including some naive perspectives, in practice they demonstrated limited capacity to translate their perspectives into their classroom teaching practices. Many of their teaching practices promoted a culture of academic science that resulted in students’ difficulty in finding connections between the science they study in school and their everyday lives. This study also reveals that teachers found difficulties in conceptualising many of the curriculum-identified values and consequently, found it difficult to find, develop and implement suitable teaching approaches to promote the values. The difficulties also included teachers encountering tension between their religious values and science values while they were teaching science in a culture with a religious tradition. These results may contribute to understanding how teaching for scientific literacy is challenged by an academically oriented curriculum, large class size, limited resources, traditional examination-oriented education and limited teacher development programmes

Decent work is employment that respects the fundamental rights of the human person as well as the rights of workers in terms of conditions of work safety and remuneration. respect for the physical and mental integrity of the worker in the exercise of his/her employment. Decent work is applied to both the formal and informal sector. It must address all kind of jobs, people and families. Decent work involves opportunities for work that are productive and deliver a fair income, security in the workplace and social protection for families, better prospects for personal development and social integration, freedom for people to express their concerns, organize and participate in the decisions that affect their lives and equality of opportunity and treatment for all women and men. Bringing public service to the access way to citizen comprises many issues like quality service, TQM, cost minimization, timeliness, decent work environment and so forth. By considering the global family, The UN also set sixteen goals and shown guidelines to a great extent. Thus this research intends to link up between UN and Bangladesh guidelines in respect of decent work environment to contribute economic growth by lowering cost, limiting time, and quality service, to provide effective public service efficiently, to find the tools to reach the objective oriented goal fixed by Government of Bangladesh , to achieve sustainable goal shown by UN through guidelines and recommendations, as well as to find a way to achieve sustainable goal and recommendations and last but not the least to ensure inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
