THE USE OF ENGLISH AS LINGUA FRANCA IN CROSS-CULTURAL CLASSES: A CASE STUDY IN DESIGN AND ENGINEERING EDUCATION

    No full text
The increasing mobility of students is shaping a new higher education landscape, which is characterized by a higher number of cross-cultural courses and, consequently, a relevant ratio of international classes. In these learning environments, students are exposed to cultural diversity and, if supported in this sense, they learn to have an open-minded attitude to other cultures. This approach is aimed at developing a curriculum better suited for the growing global job market. On the other hand, since students are not anymore native speakers, the language used in the learning environment becomes a relevant issue. The use of English as lingua franca is often the choice to address the linguistic diversity, both in English speaking and non-English speaking countries. However, learning and teaching in English is not an easy task for non-native speakers. Due to language gaps, some contents are sometimes not fully communicated or even missed. In this regard, the case study of the Master of Science course in Design and Engineering of Politecnico di Milano is presented. The course went through a five-year internationalization process, which led to a gradual transition from Italian to English. This paper proposes to point out the advantages and disadvantages of the transition from the native language to English in Design and Engineering higher education courses. Following the assumption that the use of English as lingua franca is the easiest way to implement cross-cultural education curricula, the authors look for some improvements that could be done to enhance the communication process between all the stakeholders

Postpartum reproductive activities and gestation length in Martina Franca jennies, an endangered Italian donkey breed.

The donkey reproductive physiology is still partially known despite the increasing risk of extinction involving several breeds. The present study was designed to describe the postpartum (PP) reproductive performance of an Italian endangered breed: the Martina Franca donkey. To this aim, 52 jennies were monitored to define the foal-heat (FH) and the first and second PP estrus episodes (1st PPe and 2nd PPe). The data indicate that jennies spontaneously recovered reproduction in approximately 10 days after delivery. Then heats occur with a regular interval of approximately 23 days. Estrus length was 1 week in FH and the 2nd PPe and significantly shorter in the 1st PPe. Estrus-ovulation, and delivery-ovulation interval and follicle growth were similar in all animals tested. Pregnancy rate (PR) was lower when natural mating occurred during the FH and 2nd PPe (approximately 60%) than during the 1st PPe (approximately 70%; P 80%; P < 0.01) was recorded in jennies when the FH occurred after the first week PP and it dropped (<50%) in early FH animals. The PR was also affected by the season and by age: it significantly declined during the autumn-winter season and in subjects older than the sixth year of age. For the first time, the reproductive performance of PP donkeys were defined on a large number of Martina Franca jennies thus offering useful information to improve farm management with an immediate benefit to increase livestock production. This aspect of management improvement might be particularly important if applied to an endangered breed such as Martina Franca donkeys.[...

Phylarchos (81) in Brill's New Jacoby

    No full text
This work is the first scientific English commentary to the eighty-five fragments of the Greek historian Phylarchos. All the fragments are accompanied by an English translation of the Greek text. The work is completed by a biographical essay on Phylarchos and an updated modern bibliography. Given the importance of Phylarchos for the Greek-Hellenistic history of the III century BC, the commentary on Phylarchos' fragments is an indispensable reference for all scholars of ancient history

An investigation of Japanese university students' attitudes towards English

As a global language, English has spread to the extent that non-native speakers now outnumber native speakers. In the last few decades, a body of research literature has emerged demonstrating the decreasing global relevance of native English speakers, and calling for a re-evaluation of English Language Teaching (ELT) practices, in order to better prepare students for using English as a global lingua franca. However, students’ needs and attitudes towards English and ELT must be fully investigated before curriculum changes can be suggested. Many attitude studies conclude that students favour native varieties of English. However, such research often uses single research methods and very few relate attitude studies to ELT. Further research is required regarding students’ attitudes towards English, the factors influencing these attitudes and how they relate to ELT. Moreover, few studies have investigated these proposals in any depth or explored the impact of course instruction in the global uses of English on students’ attitudes. This thesis is an investigation of Japanese university students’ attitudes towards English and English teachers in relation to the use of English as a lingua franca (ELF). In order to widen the scope of understanding, this research employed a mixture of quantitative and qualitative measures to obtain data about the participants and their attitudes. Thus, questionnaires, interviews and focus groups were used. Following the introduction, chapter two and three provide a literature review. Chapter four outlines the methodology, and the results are presented in chapters five, six and seven. Chapter eight presents a discussion of the results and the implications of this study for teaching English are discussed in chapter nine. The findings suggest that English is seen as a language belonging to native English speakers and those students want to learn native English. However, the results highlighted that a number of factors influence students’ attitudes. The findings also demonstrated that the study of Global Englishes influenced students in a number of ways, including their motivation for learning English, attitudes towards varieties of English and attitudes towards English teachers. It encouraged them to question notions of ‘standard English’, was helpful for future ELF communication and raised their confidence as English speakers. In sum, the findings of this study provide an empirical basis for a re-evaluation of ELT and suggest that Global Englishes Language Teaching is something that should be further investigated

JJ Rousseau.L'educazione etico-politica come educazione alla verità

The author Rousseau is distant in time, but his thought is central in the thesis and comments of philosophers, ideologues, historians, critics, over the last 300 years. This vast literature is littered not only of intelligent readings that have been able to appreciate and use the infinite problematic issues presented by the same author, but also of reductive stereotypes that have flattened a thought that, in our opinion, has been one of the most dense and articulated never planned. We believe in a permanent actuality of our author. Rousseau has been able to report the risks run by the democracy when it is emptied in demagogy

(”Insegnare la letteratura europea attraverso la storia della critica: il concetto di 'autore modello' come punto di partenza”)The starting point of the article is the intersection of identities formed as a consequence of relationships among different cultures. The author refers to some of the main 20th century representatives of literary criticism, based upon the concept of “model author/text”, and considering some other concepts, and verifies their applicability to the didactics of comparative literature. This should enable appropriate understanding of European literature (territorially determined as well) and it s relationship to different, not only European literatures and cultural identities
