The Rb family of cell cycle regulatory factors: Clinical implications
No full textThe retinoblastoma gene family is composed of three members: the product of the retinoblastoma gene (pRb), which is one of the most well studied tumor suppressor genes and two related proteins, pRb2/p130 and p107, which have been shown to be structurally and functionally similar to pRb. The three retinoblastoma family members show growth suppressive properties, although the growth arrest mediated by each of the three pocket regions of the proteins is not identical. This supports the idea that although the three members may complement each other, they are not fully functional or redundant. Among the three family members, the retinoblastoma-related gene product pRb2/p130 is a tumor suppressor gene and an effective candidate target for gene therapy approach. The aim of this review is to examine the role of the Rb family members in growth regulation discussing their putative prognostic and therapeutical impact in human cancer
Adaptive compensation of amplitude and phase conversion errors for FMCW radar signals
No full textThis paper deals with adaptive compensation of gain and phase errors possibly present in FMCW radars. To this end, a detailed characterization of the baseband noise and of the useful signal is first obtained. Then, elaborating on existing results, it is shown how to estimate the gain and phase errors and compensate them. A preliminary assessment of the compensation procedure on real data collected by an off-Theshelf transceiver is also given

Emerging drugs for endometrial cancer
No full textINTRODUCTION: From the dualistic classification that divides endometrial cancer (EC) into two types with distinct underlying molecular profiling, histopathology and clinical behavior, arises a deeper understanding of the carcinogenesis pathways. EC treatment comprises different and multimodal therapeutic approaches, such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy or combinations of novel drugs; however, few of these regimens have truly improved progression-free or survival rates in advanced and metastatic settings.
AREAS COVERED: We reviewed the main molecular pathways involved in EC carcinogenesis through a wide literature search of novel compounds that alone or in combination with traditional drugs have been investigated or are currently under investigation in randomized clinical trials.
EXPERT OPINION: The molecular therapies mainly discussed in this review are potential therapeutic candidates for more effective and specific treatments. In the genomic era, a deeper knowledge about molecular characteristics of cancer provides the hope for the development of better therapeutic approaches. Targeting both genetic and epigenetic alterations, attacking tumor cells using cell-surface markers overexpressed in tumor tissue, reactivating antitumor immune responses and identifying predictive biomarkers represent the emerging strategies and the major challenges

No full textDespite the worldwide accomplishment of manual counting procedures of surgical textiles and instruments, cases of retained (forgotten) surgical items (RSIs) still occur. Gauzes are the most frequently RSIs, accounting for 90% of the cases because they are widely used. Approximately half of the cases occur in the context of general surgery procedures, fol- lowed by gynaecological – obstetrics surgery. The time inter- val between initial surgery, diagnosis and removal of the gauze is clinically relevant, as the morbidity and mortality are reduced if the foreign body is removed immediately after the offending operation. We report on a successful hysteroscopic identification and removal of a gauze inadvertently forgotten in utero two years after a C-Section in a symptomatic woman
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
No full textThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
No full text“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
