Social capital in project-based organizations: its role, structure, and impact on project performance
The aim of this study is to provide evidence about the role of social capital within project-based organizations. Our assumption is that the social capital of project units increases knowledge integration, producing in turn high levels of performance at the project level. We collected primary data via sociometric questionnaires on 54 projects in the construction field. The analysis has been conducted to study the distinctive structural configuration of projects' social capital, among which we emphasize the role of network cohesion and network range. Our results provide evidence that levels of project performance are significantly associated with the particular structure of projects' social capital

Effect of hospital referral networks on appropriateness of hospitalization decisions: An HLM analysis
The purpose of this study was to investigate how a hospital’s position in its collaborative network influences patient outcomes. To overcome the limitations of existing research, we applied social network analysis techniques to investigate the inter-organizational networks formed by patient transfers across hospitals (Iwashina et al., 2009; Mascia & Di Vincenzo, 2011; Mascia et al., 2012). This social network perspective allowed us to evaluate the relationship between healthcare networks and patient outcomes in a multifold manner. First, we identified networks as emerging from actual patient flows to conceptualize healthcare system variables in a way that can be replicated across domains and geographical areas, thus overcoming the problematic use of taxonomies. Second, this study measured the variance in hospitals’ network membership by observing the different structural positions of hospitals within their own networks of patient referrals. Consequently, by combining social network theory, strategic management perspectives, and health service research, we propose a multi-level model, which explores how the position within a referral network influences both organizational performance and, importantly, patient-level outcomes
Environmental performance in the Leather Supply-Chain: the role of Inter-organizational networks
This paper presents partial results of a broader research program called “Cicle Pell: Industrial ecology in the animal-to-leather chain”, funded by the EU in the framework of the Community Programme “Interreg III C”, Regional Framework Operation "Ecosind". The goal of the Cicle Pell project was defining the basis to implement a new strategy of industrial sustainable development in Southern European regions, through the identification of economic and environmental improvements achievable by companies in the leather industry and the related supply-chain by applying the industrial ecology principles and tools. The research we report here addresses three critical issues. First, we identify inter-organizational relationships among firms and other institutions inside the sector, giving a description of various forms of cooperative environmental agreements among firms in the slaughtering and leather tanning districts. Second, we investigate - with the support of social network analysis - the peculiar characteristics of the network structure inside the industry. And third, we investigate in a comparative manner the level of association between inter-organizational network structures and environmental performance at the organizational level
