Interaction Study of Bioactive Molecules with Fibrinogen and Human Platelets Determined by 1H-NMR Relaxation Experiments
In order to investigate the interaction processes between bioactive molecules and macromolecular receptors
NMR methodology based on the analysis of selective and non-selective spin–lattice relaxation rate
enhancements of ligand protons was used.
The contribution from the bound ligand fraction to the observed relaxation rate in relation to macromolecular
target concentration allowed the calculation of the normalized affinity index
in which the
effects of motional anisotropies and different proton densities have been removed.
In this paper, we applied this methodology to investigate the affinity of epinephrine and isoproterenol
towards two different systems: fibrinogen and platelets

Splanchnic NIRS monitoring in neonatal care: Rationale, current applications and future perspectives
Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) provides a non-invasive, continuous monitoring of regional tissue oxygenation. NIRS assessment of neonatal splanchnic oxygenation (SrSO2) has gained increasing interest over the last decade, as local hypoxia and ischemia underlie the most feared gut complications in neonates. Current literature provides encouraging evidence in support of SrSO2reliability in detecting mesenteric hemodynamic changes related to various physiological and pathological conditions in-term and preterm infants. Even so, while splanchnic NIRS monitoring looks promising for investigating gut physiopathology in research settings, further studies are needed to evaluate its feasibility as a routine monitoring tool in neonatal care and to investigate its potential role in clinical decision making. After a brief introduction to NIRS technical principles, this review aims to provide a complete overview of current neonatal applications for splanchnic NIRS monitoring, to discuss its possible limitations and to suggest future directions for research and clinical applications
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Oxidative Stress and Necrotizing Enterocolitis: Pathogenetic Mechanisms, Opportunities for Intervention, and Role of Human Milk
This review will examine the role of oxidative stress (OS) in the pathogenesis of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and explore potential preventive and therapeutic antioxidant strategies. Preterm infants are particularly exposed to OS as a result of several perinatal stimuli and constitutive defective antioxidant defenses. For this reason, OS damage represents a contributing factor to several complications of prematurity, including necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Being NEC a multifactorial disease, OS may act as downstream component of the pathogenetic cascade. To counteract OS in preterm infants with NEC, several antioxidant strategies have been proposed and different antioxidant compounds have been experimented. It is well known that human milk (HM) is an important source of antioxidants. At the same time, the role of an exclusive HM diet is well recognized in the prevention of NEC. However, donor HM (DHM) processing may impair antioxidant properties. As DHM is becoming a common nutritional intervention for high risk PI, the antioxidant status of preterm and DHM and potential ways to preserve its antioxidant capacity may merit further investigation
