No full textThis study analyzes, from the perspective of spoken language, the linguistic strategies employed in the testimonies of the Covid-19 Parliamentary Inquiry (CPI), focusing on the statements by former Health Ministers Luiz Henrique Mandetta, Marcelo Queiroga, and Eduardo Pazuello. The theoretical framework encompasses Pragmatics, based on authors such as Grice (1975), Searle (1994), Fiorin (2021), Yule (1996), Pinto (2012); Conversation Analysis, according to Marcuschi (2001), Clark (2001), Cleyman and Heritage (2021), Koch (2006); and theories on Face-Work and Politeness, grounded in Goffman (1967), Brown and Levinson (1987), Kerbrat-Orecchioni (2006), Fávero, Andrade, and Aquino (2000), among other authors deemed relevant for the research. Additionally, the theoretical framework explores the specificities of a Parliamentary Inquiry and its role in the Brazilian legal system. The corpus consists of transcriptions of videos available on the TV Senado YouTube channel, following the guidelines established by Preti (2009). The general aim of this study is to analyze the use of conversational maxims in relation to face-work procedures in the selected testimonies. To achieve this, the specific objectives include: discussing the use of linguistic strategies aimed at reducing the problematic nature of topics addressed in the testimonies of the former Health Ministers; investigating the underlying intentions of the interlocutors and the effects of meaning produced in the CPI interactions; and analyzing the discursive dynamics emerging from the adherence to or violation of conversational maxims. After transcribing the testimonies, the research adopted the empirical inductive method, based on the characteristics of spoken language and the inherent variability of spontaneous interaction in real contexts (Galembeck, 1999). This qualitative study describes and interprets the spoken discourse of witnesses and senators, identifying meaning patterns within the selected theoretical framework. The results of the analyses reveal that the selected hearings are characterized by conversational strategies that reflect attempts to preserve both the positive and negative face of the interlocutors, as well as frequent violations of conversational maxims. An often ineffective communicative dynamic is also observed, resulting from inquisitorial interactions between senators and witnesses. Therefore, the results contribute to the fields of Pragmatics and Conversation Analysis by offering a deeper understanding of the conversational strategies used in highly conflicting institutional contexts.

O objetivo geral deste trabalho é analisar o uso das máximas conversacionais em interface com os procedimentos de preservação da face nos depoimentos selecionados. Para atingi-lo, os objetivos específicos incluem: discutir o uso de estratégias linguísticas destinadas a reduzir a carga problemática de tópicos abordados nos depoimentos dos ex-ministros da Saúde; investigar as intenções subjacentes dos interlocutores e os efeitos de sentido produzidos nas interações da CPI; e analisar as dinâmicas discursivas emergentes a partir da adesão ou violação das máximas conversacionais. Após a transcrição dos depoimentos, a pesquisa adotou o método empírico-indutivo, fundamentado nas características da língua falada e na variabilidade inerente à interação espontânea em contextos reais (Galembeck, 1999). Alinhando-se à pesquisa qualitativa, buscamos descrever e interpretar o texto falado de depoentes e senadores, destacando padrões de significado com base no referencial teórico selecionado. Nas análises realizadas, os resultados evidenciam que as oitivas selecionadas são marcadas por estratégias conversacionais que refletem tentativas de preservar tanto a face positiva quanto a negativa, além de violações constantes das máximas conversacionais. Observa-se também uma dinâmica comunicativa frequentemente ineficaz, resultante de interações de caráter inquisitório entre senadores e depoentes. Dessa forma, os resultados contribuem para as áreas da Pragmática e Análise da Conversação ao oferecer uma compreensão mais aprofundada das estratégias conversacionais utilizadas em contextos institucionais altamente conflituoso.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
